    But it's not about pay, it's about patient safety and not stretching doctors too far that puts patients at risk. Jeremy Hunt and this government have not care for patients, patients loved ones or the people who care for them.

    If pay is the main sticking point - then pay doctors more. I don't think the fact that we also underpay nurses, police officers, fire fighters is an adequate excuse.
    Unfortunately, I find it hard to believe that is the main sticking point, and I'm fed up with being lied to.

      Abul Hasnath It is the government and the media making this about pay (in an attempt to cynically turn people against the doctors), whereas doctors and anyone with a mind to actually listen know it's about patient safety and so avoiding higher death rates on every day of the week.

      It's more about hours than pay but considering how many hours junior doctors do which is way too much, they deserve more pay. If they can't cut the hours, atleast increase the pay. Still, hours is an issue because it can put patient safety at risk as junior doctors become very tired and increasing pay won't resolve anything except maybe motivate junior doctors a bit. It's a mess

    Let's have some serious facts. Hunt et al claim there will be 16,000 cancelled operations due to the strike. Last year 73,300 were cancelled last year (before any action) these cancellations were due to safe practice and not junior doctors-Why haven't these figure been shared? When all the A&E's and NHS hospitals have reduced services or closed those who failed to support junior doctors will realise they were giving us all the heads up , that the NHS is being deliberately underfunded and privatisation has crept in through the back door. Support #JuniorDoctorsstrike to save our NHS

    it's not about wages. it's about stretching a 5 day service over 7 so I think everybody will be at risk of dying over 7 days rather than just weekend . This means GPs need to work at weekend and every single member of the NHS also . This will never work until staffing levels across the board go up

    • @bobrail2642

    The medical unions will not have sought strike action without due process first of all. My understanding is that junior doctors have legitimate health & safety concerns for the conditions they're facing, in the absence of structured and clear data for future plans. Having worked in private healthcare and having worked alongside Drs and Nurses, some of whom moved from NHS to Private companies due to what I'd summarise as being overworked within the NHS (not accounting for other personal circumstance, just a general overview), which goes back as far as the privatisation of even the cleaning services by non-medically qualified service/contracted employees following/during Thatcherism.
    I'm currently in the process of learning more about the charging structures implemented within England (not sure about Wales) for GP appoints. Approximately (up to) £140 odd for a GP face-to-face; the most expensive of all available options. Keen to find out how this will work.

    Eamonn Holmes is not skilled enough to deal with the different tenses used by Jeremy Hunt. "I would like the public to look back on this time"; "I would like to think so". All basically a deflection. In the immediate future, I hop that the interviewers are as skilled and educated as those being interviewed, and until that point, there can be no progress or enlightenment.

    Good to see a growing sense that BMA action is grossly disproportiate - few really believe this is about saving the NHS or patient safety. Pay and Politics. Pleasing set of Newspaper Headlines this morning. Dr McCourt of BMA has obviously learnt the union boilerplate position by rote.
    After years of negotiations HMG should just go ahead and impose contract whilst keeping dialogue open to minor tweak here and there - its hard to accept there are fundemental issues with a contract previously approved by more reasonable MBA leadership.

      ngl, doctors dont take an 'oath' they are concerned as to the fact they are going to be made to work more hours, at more antisocial times, and the goverment wants to do this 'on the cheap'. besides the facts show that most deaths in hospital happen on wednesday, since 'weekends' include friday saturday and sunday.

    • @ChristopherFonseka
      @ChristopherFonseka 7 лет назад +1

      That worked for previous generations, but we now have the aftermath of a recession and house prices that kick every one, including junior doctors, off the ladder. Until Junior Doctors get to a consultantcy or GP level, they are forced to throw their money down the drain to landlords or live with their parents until they're 35 to be able to actually afford a house. This is in addition to the 7 years of student loan debt they have to contend with, which will be £63,000 for the most recent batch.
      And while (besides the magnitudes because of how long they have to study) this isn't unique to doctors, remember this is in addition to them working nights and weekends, putting up with a lot of unsavoury people who rock up to A&E and threaten them, covering for the lack of doctors that we have which are currently closing departments across the country, and having the responsibility of saving human lives every single day. Try doing that while getting the luxury of a decent nights sleep.
      This isn't greed, this isn't even about salary, despite what Jeremy Hunt is trying to convey. This is about tell people who already work overtime to do more shifts, and still magically maintain levels of patient safety, without investing any additional funding into the NHS. Please explain how that could possibly work.
