Nice review. I've been using the Deeper Pro for a few years and you covered everything I had to say about using this unit and my experiences. I am trying to find a way to not use my regular cell phone so I don't risk dropping it, getting it wet, and he fact that it's cumbersome carrying it around and putting it in a spot to use while jigging. I have tried a few set ups, attaching it to the jig rod, setting it on a bucket, and even have a clip to attach to my knee. These all are not the solution I have been looking for.
I don’t know if you still use it but I have found that an old crappy phone with a battery pack works wonders with not worrying about breaking it. I’ve heard about people using cheap Samsung tablets for bigger screens too
@willcorbin8621 yeah buddy I still do! Used it today and got a 27" whopper walleye. I tried to use other devices like an old phone and the battery was bunk, it would drain the battery faster than a PBR after work. I have a new Samsung galaxy phone I use and has a pop socket and I prop it on a bucket seat. Anytime I move around I put my phone, zipped up, in the pocket. I have a ryobi battery inverter charger I keep on hand to recharge both devices. Really I can get 4+ hours with the batteries, the phone drains faster. PS, my unit failed, the charger port. I sent it to their Ukraine facility and they had it fixed and back in new shape within a couple weeks. Psh Vexilar.
@@gabbyj666 I haven’t really used mine much but I’m excited to when the weather warms up. I have the chirp 2 and it seems good. I just haven’t marked any fish.
What was your thoughts of this when you were casting it from a rod/reel ? It seems like it would be a pretty useful tool when shore fishing or even for those who don't have side imaging units rigged up on a boat..
That's where I like it best; or rather, I think that's the area it stands out the most because of lack of other usable options for shore fishermen. When casting the river for instance, I found little 10 foot wide channels that I wouldn't have known were there by looking at the surface. From a kayak or canoe, you have other options, like 2d sonars with side imaging. But to get the bathymetric mapping ability, you need to spend around $500 plus I believe, and much more than that to get a unit that has live bathymetric mapping, like Humminbird Autochart live. The live contour mapping was very useful on a wilderness kayak trip for a lake that didn't have good contour maps available.
First off, as always your videos and reviews are great. Secondly, I don’t do much shore fishing and don’t have a kayak or boat. Looking into getting into ice fishing (I mostly fly fish during the warmer months on the WB of the Delaware in NY) and am debating whether to invest in a flasher or a Deeper. I can get tip ups and other ice fishing equipment from my father in law so the only real investment I need to make is a sonar device. Opinions/suggestions?
+westsidewil How much of your fishing would be couple hour spurts or multi day trips? How much money do you have to spend? Do you typically use your phone for watching videos, texting, etc while fishing? The answers to those questions will help guide your decision.
DIY Sportsman - I would be fishing for a couple of hours at a time. About $300. Could use my phone for videos and texting while fishing. I’m guessing a stand alone would work best for me. Although I might like to get a kayak for fishing.
+westsidewil Could probably go either way. Unless you go used, there's not a ton of flasher options under $300. If you do get a kayak down the road, it would be tough to rig up a flasher for open water use, though it's probably possible, albeit heavy. Sounds like the Deeper would be a pretty good option for you. Only downside is that you wouldn't be able to use your phone for other stuff at the same time you're viewing the fish.
how well does it work with 3 plus feet of ice? is there lots of junk on the screen with that thick of ice where the transducer is not close to the bottom of the ice?
+Fred Neville I've only used it so far up to around 30" where it works alright as long as the hole is straight. It doesn't really pick up clutter from the ice, but if the hole is drilled at an angle it will male your bait tough to see and/or effecticely reduce the cone angle.
Great job on the video! The live commentary/screen shot was very helpful. You mentioned a similar video but with kayak fishing but I can't find a link. Have you made one yet? Thanks!
I haven't made one specifically for kayak fishing. I used it in my BWCA walleye fishing video that I posted, but didn't have a ton of info on the Deeper specifically. In a nutshell, it works really well for a minimalist unit, especially with the capabilities for creating depth maps. When compared to a more expensive model that you'd typically see mounted on a boat or sit-on-top kayak, the main tradeoffs are that the battery life can't compare and the power/resolution isn't quite as good (depending on the price point of the bigger unit) but the advantage is the size and weight, which could be important if portaging or trying to lift your kayak on top of a vehicle for transport.
@@DIYSportsman much appreciated! I got one and am loving it for kayaking and shore fishing. Definitely going to try the ice fishing features in the winter. Cheers
+Janet Conover Right now it's $219 on Amazon. You have to pair it with either a phone or tablet that has WiFi capabilities. For example, you could have a cheap, dedicated tablet for displaying the deeper screen and still use your phone for other tasks.
After a year of use this does not hold a charge. But beyond that it takes a while to connect and loses connection all the time. The info lags so it is not close to real time. It drains my phone battery in less than an hour. Customer service is awful. If it needs repair you have to send it to Lithuania. Save yourself a little more money and buy something that is not a gimmick.
Hey man, what would you recommend? Im not a fan of it using my phone as I know my battery wont hold up longer than an hour. Ive never used sonar before so something easy to pick up would be great. Thanks in advance.
+Team TBQ5 For ice fishing they should be equivalent. The Pro does not have an integrated GPS like the Pro+ has, so you can't create bathymetric maps while shore fishing with the Pro.
+luke.g Giampetruzzi It does not use data. It just uses WiFi to make a direct connection between the phone or tablet and the sonar, no network involved.
Just ordered one using your link, hope you get a kick back for the great advertising.
Works pretty good. No complaints on my end.
I'm new to all this and trying to figure it out lol. Thanks for sharing.

This video was exactly what I needed to help make my decision thanks
Never dunk it in the water like from the beginning of the video. There is a chance of it going under the ice. Don't even bother risking it like that.
I had anxiety watching him do that
Dumb comment based on feelings
Awesome well made review, you just got another subscriber! Keep up the high quality content! I am excited to use the deeper ice fishing myself :)
Ill stick with my marcum. I was using a vexilar genz pack for years, but the marcum picks up bottom hugging fish so much better
Thank you for clearing up the Wi-Fi and not needing the Wi-Fi though
hey, lovely vid
How does it really do on lake of the woods. When the ice is thick? This is were we fish most of the time.
Do math. Degrees of the transducer vs. The ice thickness. Find the cone width at the depth of ice.
Have you done a comparison of the JoyLog to the deeper?
Nice job. Nuttin but the facts, awesome videos. Battery Rape... from the comments below. It’s the “me too” of the fishing world.
Haha haha omg that is too funny and too true
Won't the beam hit the sides of the hole ?

DIY Sportsman - Any problems with thick ice and using deeper?
+westsidewil I didn't have any issues on Lake of the Woods last year up to around 28". The holes need to be straight though.

what if you 2 deepers in the same shanty?
I’ll stick with my garmin striker 4 plus get that or a vexilar flasher

How much does the deeper pro plus cost and do you have to hook it up to your phone?

I use it
I like it
Will it read through ice? Have you tried that?
It has to be wet before it will turn on doubt it would read through ice.

@@markb2169 I am on the search myself. The only recommendation I have is not to buy a deeper. It is a flawed product.
how do you get the flasher on your phone
+Rob Summerville By downloading the app.
Is the pro just as good?
+Team TBQ5 For ice fishing they should be equivalent. The Pro does not have an integrated GPS like the Pro+ has, so you can't create bathymetric maps while shore fishing with the Pro.
Dont see lures jigging or fish on the screen just a bunch of lines and dots seems like junk to me
Jerry Baker you can choose to (not to) display fish symbols with depth indication in quick setttings menu
The lines and the dots are what you want. The top line sinker, next jig, next bottom. Things that come off the bottom are fish. Jeezzzze.
Only difference between deeper and flasher is only many
But flashers is virt it
Is better
kids just by a vexilar
dose it use data
+luke.g Giampetruzzi It does not use data. It just uses WiFi to make a direct connection between the phone or tablet and the sonar, no network involved.
cool
luke.g Giampetruzzi no
No you don't need data for your phone
because i dont have unlimited data so at that point it would be useless to me
luke.g Giampetruzzi no data needed
Slap you self!
Dumb....Ass
I dont see no fish lol
You get what you pay for. Buy a real flasher
Why you be a dick? Obviously this isn't the point of the video. Good lord.
