Yeah, but these new 'serious' videos suck! Between that, and having to wait so long for new vids, Bill has lost his appeal. I'm clicking away from this video after less than 5 minutes of watching. Never thought I would. I remember how great it used to be to see a new video from Bill....
Best car reviewer on the internet. You could expand to commenting on newer, electric.....anything. Your point of view, age, and knowledge gives great context and value.
My Dad had a 230SL when he and my Stepmom lived in Leucadia, California back in 1978. I was just 16 at the time and just had gotten my license. He let me drive it on Pacific Coast Highway. What a treat! As I accelerated he grew a bit concerned and suggested I watch my speed. I looked at the Speedometer and said, "I'm only going 45." My Dad gently corrected me and pointed out that it was the tachometer I was looking at (4500 RPM - about 90 mph). Oops.
I love Leucadia now, but it must have been amazing being sixteen there in1978. I envy you in the most positive way possible. I lived there and in O'side and for two years circa 2012, and, to me, it is a singularly unique place unlike any other I've experienced, specifically west of The Coaster. Circumstance currently has placed me in Ogden, Utah (I think the gods hate me), and Leucadia is high on my list of places to move when my business here is finished. BTW, this Mercedes is awesome!
@@brutalWorksSanDiego I love Leucadia too, and hope to somehow someday live there (I live in Chicago now). Back then I was just there for about four weeks visiting my Dad. The place was awesome. I'm glad to hear that at least through 2012 it still is.
@johnmohanmusic , I suppose it's gentrified a bit, but I don't think the residents of Leucadia would let the "vibe" change much; it's their greatest asset. I'm glad you got to feel it, and hope both of us will feel it again, but longer.

Bill we will never get sick of you. Been watching since the EARLY auto Europa days at the old location with the intro music. Haven’t missed a video since!
Welcome back Bill. We missed ya! Many years ago I owned a 230SL and I too had issues with the speedometer/odometer. The ODO worked, but the speedo was always inaccurate. Sent it back to Mercedes twice to be re-built/checked out but it never improved. The tachometer was always okay, but like this 280SL the needle jumped around a fair bit. Overall I loved my 230 and found it to be very reliable and inexpensive to keep on the road.
Missed your wonderful Mercedes-Benz reviews Bill! A beautiful W113 that can be superb; would you say it has enough room for a couple of M-16s and an RPG? 😂🤣😂
Love your reviews and time period stories that go with. I bought an '05 R230/SL500 base last December after seeing your reviews on them. Needed minor sorting that was no problem since I did the work myself. Mercedes cars can be a great hobby with a little patients and understanding of what's required to keep them properly maintained.
Way back when, I bought a 1972 280SE 4.5 for my wife. We drove it several years, and loved it. It was a highway cruise missile. Sadly it needed more repairs than what I could afford, and we sold it. But, a beautiful work of art.
Another classic from Bill of Curious Cars,,,, 7:29" putting it together by a bunch of well paid, beer drinking, West German engineers." Classic Bill !!! And no Canadians in that MB, except you might have one, a small one with that extra third mini seat that MB provided with some of them.

Good to see ya back!! In the mid 70’s I’d buy the Sunday times looking at these for sale. My father had the opportunity to get one from a Doctors estate for 12k…he should’ve pulled the trigger but didn’t. In the mid 80’s my second car was a 70 250 Coupe. Not an SL but the interiors were similar with the quality fit and finish,
Two quick facts: These had one piece cast aluminum doors. And Mercedes automatics shifted firmer than the american ones b/c they learned that firmer shifts extended the life of the tranny...umm...trans...ughh...gearbox thingy.
I really love the interior details of the pagoda: the ample chrome, including engine turned portions, the beautifully designed counters and numerals, the tasteful wood trim. Far more appealing than the Alfa Romeo 2600 spider or Jaguar E type of the same era, where it's all black leather (or is it vinyl), without any aesthetic appeal. Am less keen on the exterior, which is basically a box on wheels, though with a lots of chrome. The interior really takes the pagoda to the next level, though. Don't generally like white cars, but the lovely burgundy interior contrasted against the white exterior really makes this car.

I agree. Mercedes lost their character after 1995. They started looking like every other car after the W124 run ended.
The A124 cabrio continued to 97 and the R129 continued to about 2000 but I take your point!
