The Union flag had pride of place, and portraits of our late Queen were proudly displayed. We were taught OUR history, Religious education, Christianity.. I’ve just come back from Japan and they modelled themselves on England of 30/40 years ago. People have respect for everyone and where they live and the surroundings. They keep everything tidy and look after everything. I was speaking to an American and an Australian and we all agreed that Japan are putting us to shame, we could learn a lot from them. No crime, safe streets, no thugs, police in small cabins everywhere. Was an eye opener.

My great grand uncle died 23rd July 1916, 9 days away from his 20th birthday. Recently found a lot of his photographs and postcards he sent to my great great grandmother. It was 2 months before his death was confirmed, the family hoping he was a prisoner of war. My great great grandmother died a few weeks after her son's death and my great grandmother named my grandfather after her brother who was in the RAF during ww2.

My nan is a 1930s girl. I have implored my brother, who is conducting genealogy research, to record any and all conversations he has with her, as she has memories and experiences that are dying with her generation. We can not lose those memories to time. We need the experiences and wisdom they bring. Their generation sacrificed so much for us. We ignore them at our peril.

I think we were taught by grandparents who fought in the war/s. We learned how they fought and sacrificed for their country. They gave us something to be proud of and cherish for generations to come. As the generations have passed away there’s nobody left to teach the younger generations, the sacrifices have been diluted and there’s nobody left to tell them, so in their minds it’s all ‘in the past’.
I remember my Nan sat watching Churchill’s funeral on her old black and white tv, sobbing into her apron and although I didn’t really understand I knew he was someone special. Who have todays young people got to look up to? The Kardashians? Social Media influencers? Is all so shallow and vacuous.
