MSN TV 2 online again in 2023 (Proof of concept)

- UPDATE (3/21/2023): While this won't be useful for most people, I have recently started another wiki on GitHub solely dedicated to documenting as much of the MSN TV 2 service as I can and how it works. My hope with this is that other people come across it and consider contributing more info on the service and some parts of the firmware in some way, although I might just be being too hopeful at this point. Anyway, the link to the wiki: github.com/wtv...
UPDATE (3/9/2023): Hey all, wtv-411 here. If you were expecting any updates regarding this MSN TV 2 revival project, then you will be very disappointed as I don't have anything other than that a project aiming to document what I know about the MSN TV 2 service may come out soon. This current revival project might not become anything more than a proof of concept due to how little content from the original service managed to survive. If you are interested in helping us out with documenting more of the service and other things surrounding the MSN TV 2 set top box, I implore you to go through with it.
It's finally happened, after lots of research and work from wtv-411, and some help from me (JarHead), we've finally got the MSN TV 2 properly connecting to a server!
Right now this isn't very elegant, requiring a hacked firmware image, and a selfhosted web server and DNS server, but it works.
Most features aren't functional yet, but we spent the day getting IRC to work well, so that's a good starting point.
This is just the first step in a very long journey, and this server is nothing more than a proof of concept at the moment, but we're on our way!

This channel is part of a bigger project to document any and all information on WebTV/MSN TV. Check it out: wiki.webtv.zone
welcome to the future.
4:17: "Mom look, I'm famous!" moment
Fun fact: I was talking via the WebTV viewer, so the MSN TV 2 box was technically communicating with first-gen WebTV :P
Newsgroups might be added later and will probably be linked with WebTV Redialed (Jar's revival server).
wait you have alpha access
@@retrofoxxo yeah, I have Redialed access
@@SKCro. cool
Mind is blown
HOW DO I GET THIS SERVER
outstanding work
Wow, you made some great progress!
0:01 i like how for 2 frames it says "Doing the funny"
yep i saw it
mad people!!! you did it
NICE!!
Just posting this as a disclaimer for those who are quick to think that this is going to mean a private server for MSN TV 2 will come out: *there are no current plans to create an actual server.*
There are a few reasons as to why it won't happen, but it's mainly that one: content for the core MSN TV 2 services (Mail, Chat, login/registration and account settings) are lost and undocumented, and recreating them will be impossible, and two: MSN TV 2 boxes are absurdly rare to find and go for high prices these days, and since there is no real way to emulate them, the potential audience for a private server would be extremely limited. I have used my knowledge of the service that I've obtained from writing the proof of concept server to create a GitHub wiki for it linked in the description, so this hasn't been an entire waste of time at least.
we gettin' there
Ayy MSN TV resurrected FTW!
Goin' forwards!
"Doing the funny."
HELP I’M WHEEZING! 😭
Cant wait for use it again like back in 00s and 10s
Crazy how this is still better than the average "smart" tv
mjd will defo get interested
michael mjd made a video on MSN TV 2 but didn't see this video. So he bought an MSN TV 2 and he was disappointed, but he actually made the video.
@@aolmsnThen we'll need to ask @MichaelMJD to watch this video to get his MSN TV 2 Box online and, finally, bypass the connection step to explore the MSN TV user experience in one of his next videos.
@@RodrigoMoreira2008 While I would be flattered if MJD covered what I and JarHead are doing with MSN TV 2, the fact of the matter is that this likely will stay as a proof of concept, and even if we wanted to, making a proper server out of this is going to be next to impossible due to how little documentation and content exists for the MSN TV 2 service. We're open to hearing what MJD thinks about all this though! :) ~ wtv-411
You gotta love the options because we've all been there. You've been scrolling for hours and it's time to look at some old memories. There are times when Photos will do the trick but sometimes in very rare circumstances you need Photos not Photos, am I right?
AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH LET'S GOOOOOOOOO
this is awesome
Looks real interesting! I could probably lend you an account on my server, so you can host this MSN TV 2 server.
Ok, look this barely doesn’t function and you do know they have their own server. Currently this is private and will not be public in the future

Please tell me these messages were added after the fact.
I refuse to believe the staff of MSN TV were so cultured to include things like that in the live service.
That was all JarHead's doing, lol. We have no idea how the progress bar worked on the real service, but it was likely more standard fare. ~ wtv-411
am i only one thinking that reinhilde never disconnects as he is still online
Someone should make MSN TV, but it was made in 2024.
0:01 Doing the funny
YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Id wish to run this again on A emulation since MSN TV runs on windows CE it should not be that hard to run it right?
...right?
we need to say escargot
Wow that's.... aero
Does It Work On Escargot?
How about 2024?
YOOOO
you think you can connect the messenger to Escargot?
There have been attempts to wire this proof-of-concept up to Escargot but none have been successful yet.
this is awesome, i wonder what OS and it looks very frutiger aero for windows xp era
Technically this is part of the Windows CE family with an MSN Explorer-like shell
@@FairPlay137that's cool
Can you please send me the link and step of how to get this?
it's still not public, but you can try WebTV Redialed
@@aolmsn It will never be public. For now I'm ripping apart tv 2 and get it to emulate and go back online also there's reasons this wont be public 1. wtv-411 made them private after he left 2. msn tv 2's are rare hopefully we can get this service back online in 2024. I hope you the best
-Ryder
it's a proof of concept and there isn't any plans to make a server
I would like to know on how to do this. How would I set this up? What emulator would I download for this? I don’t have an actual Msntv2 unit anymore. So how do I run the boot image so I can connect to this Msntv 2 server? And what Webtv viewer do I use? Okay, so just let me know, please. Thanks.
Right now, you would have to replicate the necessary web scripts and modify a registry value in the firmware's baked-in registry file to even get it to log in. Neither the scripts or a patched version of the firmware are publicly available for the time being as they were just used to experiment with things and the scripts in particular are very unrefined and are not meant to be used for an actual service. Since there's also the issue of literally almost all the MSN TV 2 content being unarchived for one reason or another (services requiring login for access, apathy from even those who messed with the service, etc.), the chances of an actual MSN TV 2 server cropping up is very unlikely AFAIK.
However, while a proper MSN TV 2 server may never be possible at the moment, I did publish all that I've been able to uncover about the MSN TV 2's servers and firmware on a GitHub wiki, with the hopes that those who are knowledgeable and take an interest in the MSN TV 2 can potentially help out and uncover even more stuff about this weird little device and its service. Link for it is in the description. :)
i clicked the video only because it said skcro in the thumbnail
real
How can I host this?
Oh yeah ok so to host this you need a way to host a apache server locally then you need to gather a backup of the main msn tv 2 home page with the assets then you need a login script. And you need a msn tv 2 and a CompactFlash Reader to write a custom image to allow http access It’s long and complicated so you better of until there’s more information but this is not public and will never be
ahhh ok

I loved my WebTV bring it back please❤❤❤
Just in case you're talking about the original WebTV (which did end up being renamed to MSN TV as well, and is much older and notably had a smart card slot for all units), JarHead is already working on a server for those boxes that's actually nearing completion. MJD uploaded a video showcasing it a few months ago: ruclips.net/video/NjteQv6oYgA/видео.html. As for MSN TV 2, though, a proper server for that won't be coming out any time soon for various reasons, but mainly it's because getting it to work would require hacking the firmware at this point and so much from its service is lost it's not even funny. Reimplementing most of the original services would be virtually impossible (and at best, some assets have to be recreated for some pages).
