      Yeah.. meanwhile most nations that are *"Going their own way"* often results in having in either two pathways, once they realize their project has gap holes in performance and funding, because their GDP is relatively low and this is where the two pathways split, one, incorporate some of the American, Russian, or Chinese tech into it, or two, all together abandoned the project and then turn to buy an export variant of that nations jet, all in all going a unique one's own militarized style is often difficult because of the political landscape, sure you could argue that the Europeans managed to create their own jet fighters being the EF-2000 Euro Fighter and Dassault Rafale mainly, and even then their respective American tech is still within their ranks, because you can only afford so much, and with politics in play, it could only go so far, and to be frank most of thr designs if you look more in depth are essentially copy and paste designs stolen from the Americans

    Small Correction: The JF-17 program will not "replace" the F-16s in Pakistani service. Its been designed to replace almost 250x obsolete warplanes in PAF Inventory namely the A-5 Fantan, F-7/P/PG and Mirage-III aircraft. The Block-III JF-17C is equipped with AESA radar and 4.5 gen technology, designed to complement Pakistan's more advanced fighters like F-16s and J-10C.
    Moreover, Pakistan Aeronautical Industry has gained invaluable experience and know how during the development of JF-17 program and those learnings are now being incorporated into the next generation fighter aircraft (NGFA) program to develop 5th generation technologies and systems in Pakistan. @darkskies

    The funny thing is that because of the aggressive marketing of the JF-17 as an export fighter, the US has reconsidered the sale of F-16s to countries that were ineligible before, to avoid countries turning towards the eastern sphere of influence.
    Still, for non NATO countries, having access to a jet that they don't have to worry about being blocked access to weaponry and spare parts in case of an arms embargo is very useful. A JF-17 will always be fully operational, an F-16 is subject to the whims of US policies.

    Whatever it's "expected" to replace, it all boils down to if the JF17 able to do what it's expected to do. It doesn't need to be the best, it only needs to be better than what it goes up against... it only has to be good enough.
    I once heard an aviation commentator describe the 50 year old F-15 Eagle's ongoing presence in today's world: "It's not the fastest fighter but it's fast enough. It's not the most agile but it's agile enough. It's not the most heavily armed, but it's armament is good enough. It's RADAR isn't sci-fi advanced, but it's advanced enough. Even the most advanced blocks proposed for JF-17 are significantly inferior to *current production* F-16s.
      The JF-17 is simply a less capable aircraft in pretty much every significant measure. That's a major reason why it is so much cheaper.
      Now, that doesn't mean it's a *bad* aircraft. There are several nations currently looking for new fighters who would be very well served by the JF-17... better served for *their actual requirements and fiscal limitations* by the JF-17 than current F-16s, Eurofighter, MiG-29, etc. Argentina, for instance.
      But the fact that JF-17 is a better fit for some nation's actual needs and budget doesn't remotely mean it is equal, much less superior, to the F-16.

    • @Blackbirdz2000
      @Blackbirdz2000 Год назад +1

      @@paulsteaven yeah it could be, but that is more of capability being added over time. If im not wrong old F16A early blocks were also purely dogfighters, designed and build after learning from Vietnam war lessons to counter mig21s. Multirole capability was added over time. But what yr missing with that argument is that due to adding that multirole capability, F16s ended up loosing or compromising on their maneuverability(lighter wings of early f16A block 0 to 20 vs heavier wings from block 25 to 70) Today when u see F16V blk70 carrying those triple racks under its wings, this would have given its designer a heart attack if he was still alive today as this was NEVER his intention while designing this aircraft.
      Same way with this FA50's multirole capability being added will also make the Koreans compromise on certain things, things which maybe crucial.
      That is why i wrote that JF17/F20 were designed from day 1 as multirole fighter aircrafts instead of what was primarily designed as a trainer and fighting capability was added later on. As in these small single engine light fighters, u can add something new by only compromising something else most of the time due to lack of space, which is in result due of their small size. This FA50 was originally T50 trainer. Later this FA50 version was build as a LIFT aircraft meaning a trainer who can fight more or less. These will remain the problem for these LIFT platforms including for the Italian M346 and Chinese L series trainers/LIFT

    I dont think un sanctionable fighter is the first reason countries decide on the buying the JF-17. I think it is the cheapest modern multi role light fighter you can get. • @geodkyt
      @geodkyt Год назад +5

      And that is a valid reason to select a significantly less capable aircraft (amd realistically, despite all the hype China and Pakistan put out, the JF-17 is far less capable than current production export F-16s... even using the Chinese marketing performance figures).
      But, having an aircraft that is four times or more capable doesn't help if the four times or more price tag means you simply *can't afford enough of them* to give you the coverage you need, especially if you can get adequate coverage out of less capable (but equally less expensive) fighters.
      That was literally the idea behind the US F-5 in the late 1950s.
      The fact that it sidesteps any potential EU or US sanctions or export limits is also useful for some nations. For example, any fighter equipped with Martin-Baker ejection seats is pretty much a non-starter for Argentina, due to the Falklands dispute - the UK is not going to sign off on letting British ejection seats be installed in fighters that they may face in combat, if it means Britain can block a potential foe (who still sabre-rattles over the issue) from getting more advanced fighters.

      @geodkyt Год назад +11

      @@AM-SD To be fair, while it is entirely possible that Myanmar got a bunch of flawed JF-17s, the technical issues they are describing as causing the grounding of their JF-17 fleet are *all* things that poor maintenance (a long standing issue for Myanmar, amd one even thier own government admits to) and a bunch of pilots routinely subjecting the aircraft to serious over-g (this can be a problem even with the F-16, and that aircraft is capable of *far* more g-loading than most pilots can take, provided you don't do it while carrying a bunch of stores on the wings). So, absent more data, I wouldn't take Myanmar's difficulties as indicating actual issues with the aircraft - could be poor maintainer training, poor maintainer logistics support, failure to allow maintainers the time they need to work on the aircraft (a problem *every* air force has, requiring strong leadership at the squadron level to push back against demands from higher to "quit funding about and get those planes in the air!" when they haven't had their routine scheduled maintenance), hot shot pilots ignoring the aerodynamic and structural limits of their airframes, poor quality control from the factory, any any combination in any ratio of any ot all of these factors.
      The aircraft *design* looks rather credible, provided you don't believe the marketing hype and expect it to be something other than an "economy" model multi-role *light* fighter, with limits inherent to the design choices and trade-offs made. (Again, it is *indentical* in concept and role as the earlier US F-5, even though the two designs nearly 50 years apart have no *engineering* relationship. If US or allied air forces had been taking brand new F-5s and treating them like they were new F-4s or Mirages while skimping on maintenance, the F-5s would have broken down in a couple of years. Because you can't misuse and abuse an aircraft, and try to force a heavier role on a light airframe than it was designed for, and not have problems.)

    The jeff was not meant to replace the F-16. It was meant to be an additional capability in the form of a lightweight fighter that could serve as the backbone of the PAF. Medium weight fighters like the F-16 were supposed to serve as the higher more capable but smaller part of the fleet.
    The replacement for the F-16 is the J-10c. Even beforehand when issues with the F-16 had arose, the Pakistan considered early J-10 variants (like the A) to replace the viper.
    Furthermore, near the end, you mentioned that the Jeff is far behind the latest F-16's in terms of capabilities. While this is true in the payload aspect, this is merely a fact because the two aircraft are completely different weight categories. Furthermore, the latest Jf-17 variant, the Block 3, has quite advanced avionics and electronical systems along with the capability to be equipped with state of the art weapons, (both air to air and air to ground) it is quite the capable jett and not as bad as the video claims to be.

    He is right that Pakistan needed an unsanctionable aircraft free of US embargoes. Pakistan long defence tryst of more than 67 years with the US is tainted with repeated sanctions. The only way out was to be free of such limitations. Definitely a JF-17 cannot technically replace an F-16 but figuratively yes, it is the only choice left with the PAF to operate- maintain & upgrade independently. In the event of a complete ban on her F-16 fleet ( like happened after 1998, or the US sanctions which decimated which its F104A/Bs after 1965 Indo-Pak war), the only true aircraft to replace it in numbers is the JF-17.

Then you have the WS-15 for J-20 which will enable it to supercruise.. ws-13 or ws-21 would power JF-17, FC-31 carrier based 5th gen fighter and some large UAVs. So if 20 years ago they decided that the metallurgy wouldn't be enough.. they would have been still here today. Meanwhile PAF thunder block-3 has AESA radar and more advance avionics than our F-16s... In the short future we will witness J-10Cs and JF-17s as spearhead of PAF meanwhile F-16s will be used for certain missions.
