      So then of course I had to google Chamacereus silvestrii and look at photos, and yes, that was probably the one ! 👍 It never had flowers for me, and I didn't see flowers on it in anyone elses house either... It was in the living room where it never got the necessary cold period... This was back in the late 1970ies or early 1980ies... Back then having holiday cacti and a few desert cacti, was quite common, especially this one that we are talking about here, and one specific Echinopsis with white flowers. The Echinopsis actually bloomed for me ! 🌵🤗💮

    Hi Lyn! im in abit of a pickle with my peanut cacti and have no one else to ask :(
    They can only get about 1 hr of direct sun per day but very bright indirect sunlight for the rest of the day which has roof shade in the event of rains, my question is, it possible for them to live well with that little sunlight?
    Id like to put them in areas with which get maybe 4 hr of direct sunlight per day but i fear it might rain while im not home! and my cacti might get overwatered :/ i unfortunately dont have enough funds to invest in a good greenhouse since the materials might be more expensive in order to withstand the very strong typhoons my country faces.

      Hi there, the good news is that Peanut cacti will still grow perfectly well with an hour of direct sun a day and with bright indirect sun the rest of the day, they can definitely live well in that light, most of my Peanut cacti grow in my green covered polytunnel which is not the best for light and only get an hour of direct sun in the morning, and less than this this year due to the awful wet summer in Ireland LOL! but they still grow well and flower, I even have one of my Chamacereus silvestrii Peanut Cactus bowls outside in my yard under the roof of the kitchen and it gets only bright indirect light and almost no direct sun, but it still grows well and flowers for me, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a terrific Tuesday XXXX

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  Год назад +1

      @@zharakov Hi there :-D yes they cacti can still grow with less sunshine and an hour of sunshine a day, but they are more likely to bloom in a position with more sunshine, silver ball (Parodia), and Thimble cactus ( mammillaria ) are more sun loving and need more sunshine than the Peanut Cacti do to get to flower, but you can install a LED plant grow light and have the grow light on for an extra 2-3 hours during the day, this will give them the extra sunlight that these particular cacti need to encourage blooming and better growth, I have a LED plant grow light in one of my north facing windows that never gets any natural sunshine at all, but I have the grow light on for 3 hours a day during summer and I get my cacti and other plants to bloom still, Grow lights are like mobile windows haha, but your Peanut cacti will still be absolutely fine with an hours sunshine a day even without a grow light as they are much more freely flowering with lesser sunlight conditions XXXX

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  7 месяцев назад +1

      Hi there, argh mealy bugs are a pain for us cactus growers and I am always having to deal with these awful pests, I find the best thing is rubbing alcohol / Isopropyl alcohol, if you don't have any rubbing alcohol then you can also use vodka or methylated spirits, I put some into a little hand held spray bottle and spray the cacti with the alcohol, it kills the mealies on contact, and by spraying the cacti the alcohol can reach in between all the spines and crevices on the cacti, I then use a little tiny brush like a lip brush or clean mascara wand brush or a child's toothbrush and I gently rub the alcohol over the cacti to loosen up the mealies and their white woolly nests, you can also put some of the alcohol into a small bowl and dip the brush into the alcohol and dab it onto the cacti, it can be a bit time consuming and does need to be repeated every week until all traces of these 'beasties' are gone, once the mealies are gone I then like to use a very light dusting of diatomaceous earth powder over the cacti as this helps to prevent the mealies coming back, I hope this helps, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a fantastic Friday XXXX
