Finding gold on the hard pan, also known as false bedrock is one of my favorite places to locate good gold. Lots of chunky gold! Finding a hard pan can be difficult. Most areas of the creeks will have bedrock or clay bottoms. Hard pans seem to develop in slower moving water. So you have to remove a lot of over burden to get to it. You will often find nice color as you dig down. Once you get to the hard pan, clear enough of the surface gravels to allow the water to agitate the hard pan. Day after day you will be able to remove more sand & gravels. Similar to an archeological dig. The hard pan often hold nails, lead bird shot & gold. You may have to use a mask & snorkel to see in the water to observe the hard pan as you clean it. As you sweep your hand over the bottom to move the sands you should find some nice color laying on the hard pan. Gold that was encased in it but is slowly being uncovered & exposed. There isn't any other prospecting that is as much fun as looking in the water & seeing gold as you uncover it.
