I'm an Arsenal supporter, but my first ever live match was at Old Trafford in November 1996, United won the match 1-0. What amazed me though was the stadium, the new upper tier over the Sir Alex stand was only built and no upper stands or corners yet at either end. Although it was only about 55,000 at the time, Old Trafford was the envy of England. Those images I see now of waterfalls in the stands and leaks in the roof, the owners should be ashamed. The supporters deserve better than that.
United fans be careful, having the biggest stadium in the world sounds good and suits the ego of us United fans. But it also means once it is complete, the owners / investors will generate money constantly from this regardless if we win, lose or draw. Some could argue this is good as it means guaranteed income for the club but based on how owners of this club have acted with club funds before, it’s more likely the money will be used to build up their own wealth. Too much focus on the outside stuff rather than the actual stadium is a sign that they want this to be a lucrative real estate project with malls and housing rather than just an amazing stadium.
While that is true, that is also wrong The money the club has spent has been under poor footballing leadership, 1.6bil spent the past 13 seasons but no major trophies to show for it.
Bigger stadium means more revenue which is vital for PSR and being able to buy and attract the best players. The owners should be able to generate money for themselves I.e Ratcliffe (not the Glazers who have bled the club dry). He isn't going to invest 1.5 billion if he doesn't see it as commercially viable and he should be allowed to expect a return for money invested. The only people who invest and probably aren't too concerned about a return are the Saudis, who with unlimited funds are more concerned about sports washing and gaining power and popularity in the UK, where the PL is the most popular and global league in sport
Call me old school, but traditional stadiums have far more character than modern grounds. There’s something magical about stepping into a historic stadium, surrounded by the stories and memories embedded in its walls. You don’t just see it, you smell the tradition, unlike the plastic vibe of today’s cookie-cutter designs. Old Trafford, for example, has a unique structure and aura that simply can’t be replicated. Sure, technology and modernization have their place, but at what cost? Destroying iconic grounds to build shiny new ones often feels like just another scheme to squeeze more money out of fans, just to pay off the investment and watch millionaire kids run around the pitch. The football circus has spiraled out of control, and in the relentless race for profit, we’re losing the soul of the game. But let’s be honest, that’s nothing new. So go ahead, build it, slap a £100 price tag on each match. The ones who will truly suffer are the working-class fans who’ve been there every game, not the plastics who can easily afford it. But hey, who cares about tradition and local fans when money is doing all the talking?
Facts I Love old Trafford still has that magical feeling to it. Just needs some small upgrades but a complete reconstruction is not needed. Ratcliff is a dictator it’s his way or the high way. Already testing the waters with ticket prices going up. And I fully agree once the new stadium is built he will raise the tickets even higher to something like £100. If locals refuse to go it doesn’t matter because tourists will always come for the experience. Fans should be careful what they wish for.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the company chosen to redevelop and build the new stadium is Foster + Partners, owned by Norman Foster, who's also a Mancunian.
Spurs have a shiny new stadium, they still win nothing, if anything you could argue that at times, the stadium is more prolific than the club itself. There would be nothing more embarrassing to build a new stadium and continue to perform the way Man United have been for the past however many years. Spend money on the team first and improve results, then start thinking about a new home.
Even though I think it will be the best to build a new stadium it will be sad to see old Trafford go, I mean they could use that as training ground or the the under 21 or something I hope they can use old Trafford for something because the history the memories
Being totally honest, the main pull of a new stadium is the potential capacity increasing my chances of getting matchday tickets. Apart from that I would rather a renovation of Old Trafford. The chances of the new stadium being a flop and taking the soul out of the match seems pretty high, judging by recent examples.
It's interesting that the younger fans want to retain features of the ground that have only come along in very recent years or since the Premier League era. I recently saw one of the Fan Cam guys say he wants the White Scaffold roof support recreated to reflect the history of the ground. Well, thats less than 30 years old as is the Tunnel in the corner as one fan mentions in this video. If you want tradition bring back the Red and White Picket Fencing around the pitch, just don't go changing the temperature settings for the Pie warming machine, It's always nice to have a hand wamer that will last throughout the game and part of the jouney home.
Concerning when people contributing here are not aware that the players tunnel wasn't originally in the corner of Old Trafford but had to be moved there for safety reasons from its original position between the dugouts.
Fan reactions are mixed. Some supporters are excited about the prospect of a state-of-the-art facility that could enhance matchday experiences and generate additional revenue. Others express concerns about losing the historic atmosphere of Old Trafford, fearing that a new stadium might lack the unique character that has defined the club for over a century As of now, the club is in the planning stages, with project submissions expected by the end of 2024 and potential construction commencing in early 2025. The entire project could take up to six years to complete, aiming for a 2030 opening 🎉🎉
"The structure dates back to 1910". No, it doesn't. Oldest stand is about 30 years old. The rest are pretty recent. Just for comparison, the Golden Gate Bridge is 87 years old and the Eiffel Tower is 135 years old. Unless it was cowboy built, Old Trafford has a few decades more and the Bernabeu had a face lift not a rebuild.
So the BBC are doing a documentary/publicity/advertising campaign for a new stadium free of charge for the richest club in England but want the public to pay for it!!!!! on behalf of Man United at the license fee payers expense??
As long as Ratcliffe pays for it out of his own pocket he will definitely try and get tax payers pay for it also doesn’t even pay his own tax in the uk
Why not ask for money when the high-speed train from London to Manchester HS2 project was cancelled the cost was 80 billion The government needs to invest in the northwest as well not just the south. But bitter rival fans will always say “You pay it yourself” 😂
If the local government isn't willing to contribute anything towards the project, then they shouldn't gain anything from the economic benefits the new stadium will inevitably generate
I am torn, I would love them to do somthing with the current stadium but understand the possible need for a new building. It is all well and good saying that the US has amazing stadia but who paid for the new construction? It was public finance in many cases. There is not a chance local government or indeed national government hould put their hand in their pocket. (and I don't think they should either btw). A new stadium is not going to be cheap ans SJR will be charging top dollar as we have seen with recent price rises. Glad I don't have to make the decision.
The structure doesn’t date back to 1910 that’s BS. Only the original tunnel dates back to that time. The roof doesn’t leak that was the rainwater system being overwhelmed by a 1 in 1000 year storm. You might want to check out the recent flooding of Everton’s new stadium because of the same issue. There needs to be investment but I’m sick of people sh!tting on the stadium. Still the biggest club stadium in the country and still a fine venue.
@ that’s not what’s commonly referenced when people say it leaks. They are talking about the downpour from the rainwater system which happened once. I said it needs investment but let’s keep it in proportion. Yes there are better stadiums now, and for United not to have the best is not acceptable, but there’s a whole lot worse.

Old Trafford is as precious as the San Siro, yet here are fans being gaslighted as if this isn't a money-making exercise, and that the funding can't fix a leaking roof, etc.
The problems at Old Trafford go far beyond a leaking roof…..the days of trying to patch up the stadium are over, something drastic needs to happen. Yes, and I’m saying that as someone who’s been going for 50 years.
The problem is that there's only so far that misty-eyed history can take you. Despite being a lifelong fan, being a country bumpkin from the middle of nowhere, I was never able to get to any games growing up. I'd only been to a 1978 friendly against Real. So, I gave up on the idea of ever going again. But then a couple of years ago I went to a WSL game against Everton with my granddaughter. I was surprised at the state of the stadium. Honestly, the forecourt on the inside looked like a public toilet with its bare red brick walls. It was a good day out but, seriously, the stadium's seen better days. I was originally of the opinion that they could just renovate the stadium because I'd hate to see it just pulled down, but in all honesty, it would be better if it was pulled down and replaced.

The idea of a new stadium is a completely over the top indulgent rubbish. Work with what you got. If the rook leaks simple fix it.
