I had the same thought. I was also thinking that everybody learns more from their mistakes than they do from there successes, so I bet this man had more mistakes then those of us who don't build engines as well. And thankfully he did because we get to watch this kind of stuff and the things he builds these days.

    G'day Steve ,
Skoota here from the land under down under .
I have been watching your recent videos on your Magnusson big block super charger kit that you have been developing and I thought you might like to know about some interesting information from the land of OZ .
There is a company in Australia that has been around for many many years and has been developing high end race car equipment .
What they have developed for big block Chevy's in 2023 is a bolt on kit with all the same accessory mounts and drives (like yourself) to bolt an Eaton TVS 2650 supercharger with under blower intercooler to big block chevs .
What is great about the Harrop kit is that it is a low profile set up that with the addition of a bonnet (hood) , that's what we call them in OZ , bulge/scoop , everything is kept below the bonnet (hood) .
They developed this kit in conjunction with a RUclips channel here in Australia called the Skid Factory .
On the Skid Factory , the main character called Al , who has had years and years of boosting (turbos) local cars , decided to finish a pet project of his own .
This project was started a number of years ago and never quite finished . This car that was Al's pride and joy was a 1969 Toyota Crown .
So Al decided that he wanted to pull his finger out (Aussie way of saying "to have a go") , and get his car finished so that he could take his son to his high school graduation .
So he fitted an aluminium 427 big block chev to his crown . After he done this he rah the Crown on a hub dyno and was happy with the result .
But Al being Al , and his nick name being "Turbo Yoda" , decide that the Crown could do with some additional "boost" cause "We all love big boost and we cannot lie" .
So he contacted Harrop Engineering and asked if they had a supercharger kit to suit the big block .
They did not have such a kit in their parts catalogue .
Well , this request got Harrop all interested and keen to try something new .
So through trial and error , also Ng with Al from the Skid Factory , and his magnificent Toyota Crown , they developed a very impressive bolt on kit to suit big block Chevy's .
If you search for the Skid Factory on RUclips and type in Toyota Crown with Harrop supercharged big block chev , you will find all the episodes with Al's magical Toyota Crown .
Keep in mind that this is not an outrageous build , but a really tough everyday streetable car that is different from the crowd and very presentable .
I hope that you would like to know this info and that you might enjoy watching some Aussie content RUclips .
Also , I have previously bought some merchandise off you , mainly t-shirts . The fit and quality of the shirts are excellent and the big thing is that from where I'm from , no one else has got them so when I do wear them they really stand out from the crowd .
Especially the "I love big boost" shirt . It has everyone doing a double then a triple look at what there reading .
From one of your Aussie fans , Jack Schouten (Skoota) .

the accelerator pump diaphragms love to dry out and harden, when they do it has less travel overall, the lever no longer returns to the same height and will often show up as wider clearance before the bolt hits the lever. it often looks like a adjustment issue and adjusting it up then will make it work, but at reduced total volume and short duration. learned that the hard way, long ago.
I'm leery of them on any carb that's been sitting dry of fuel for more than a few days unless fresh rebuild never fueled.

Yeah but it only uses a 10PK belt drive. Not big enough. Steve mentioned he was using a 12PK. Also without a water pump being driven it tightens up all of it with a lot less overhang. Keep in mind an AC compressor uses a 4pk, an alternator, water pump and power steering pump uses a 6PK belt. So that is 10 all ready. Then add a 26650 with all it's rotating mass it has to control on the throttle close the 12PK should be the minimum. The blower is drawing the most power on the drive by a long way. It really loads up tensioners on deceleration and will cause it to loose belts. The 26650 and the 2300 should really have a dedicated belt drive but by the time you do that it overhangs so far you start to need outrigger bearing supports on the crank and it all snowballs into a less compact far more expensive street system.
I am an Aussie and actually have Harrop bits on my car so nothing against them but I would say Steve's system would be a lot more heavy duty.

I don't understand on these serpentine belt setups y they only just use one tensioner on one side of the belt and the other side flaps like crazy, its a 12 rib but will probly belt slip when u start upping the boost and shrinking the pulley. I had good luck on a eaton M65 SC that i did 2 idlers right under sc pulley to make tight radius around the SC pulley and make belt grip better with way less flap too. I have seen some underhood videos of the tensioners just flying all the way in as soon as u nail the loud pedal and revs come up, plus the other side of belt is wavy and super flappy. Cog setup or shaft drive is the only way to go for hella power, you can still get up there with serp belt but takes a few tricks once u reach a certain level with belt slip and watch those delta temps too. Great work and just a thought i had for your drive system Steve. The kit u have is super cool and if u make all the main brackets the same and all accs bolt onto it directly or with certain brackets customers can have the option to mix and match what they want like ac and no power steering or just alt and ps instead of Hot rod just alt and then everything kit they can have any combo they wish and u don't have to have several different main belt drive brackets. Modular design is a cool thing and customers love options cause no two setups are alike lol.

Curious what injector pulse width was I also run the 2150s they are great.

Loved the " MAGGY " ( as far as 2650's... Magnuson 's iteration has beat the myriad of others for us ) segment... I would certainly love to see a few more dyno runs, with this/another 540 with larger capacity pumps as in maybe a Whipple or two... say 6 Gen. 3.8L and larger... even a High Helix' 8 to 14:71... or not. Whatever trips YOUR trigger... you have the audience... and the desire OUT HERE. Always eager to see what you have lined up for us. Respectfully, Seth

i have a question about your SMX engine. no one is able to use all the power with out tearing their cars apart. like mullet and toms 2.0 is there any other tubing or something they can use to make these cages and frames stay together. or has everyone about topped out of HP and speed on street driving cars. because it seems they have the drive train to go faster but not the cars.

4:10 and 4:43 you can see belt slap, any concerns? I'd be curious to see if the belt stayed on during an aggressive pedaling situation where you're coming on and off throttle rapidly.

Let me know when this set up on big block can make over 2k hp. Nice to have the air intake up out of the hood and not behind the radiator. I love big torque down low too.

Ever thought of taking the design and having the manifold for the Magnusson cast instead of making it from billet? Didn’t know if that could lower the cost.

    • @leftyeh6495
      @leftyeh6495 4 месяца назад +1

There's already cast stuff out there. The whole point of billet is that it's strong and looks killer.
Cast pieces still need machined, just less so. They're not any cheaper unless you can afford to have a foundry do a whole run of hundreds or even thousands to bring the cost per unit down.

It would be fun to fit one of those giant engines in my E36 but I'm pretty sure I would need some king of 4 wheel drive lift kit to get a big block to keep from scraping on the ground. That thing is huge. LS engines are just so much easier to fit.

That mag used blown big block really performed. Wonder if a 496 would be a better match for the blower size used? Power might be very similar.

Good to see a big block Chevrolet with a Magnuson can produce as much horsepower as a 376 cubic inch Hellcat with a Magnuson on a modern Hemi.
Perhaps two Chevrolet big blocks are required?

    Make one for a SBC!!!
You can start with a Weiand 4-71 or 6-71 base, then just make a "CONVERSION PLATE" so the whipple part will bolt to the weiand intake base...
Just space out a factory 87-92 serpentine brackets, use pulleys to keep the belt over so it clears the water pump, etc. That or just leave the serpentine setup alone and space out the pulley shaft with a pulley spacer... Or a longer shaft that sticks the flange the pulley bolts onto out 3-4" needed to clear everything...
I would buy it within the next 6 months... If not i am gonna be stuck with a Vortech/ATI Procharger one... But i really want one of those Whipples... Even if i have to convert to Holley EFI or 24X Reluctor type setup...
