      Well anything besides your hand right on top of the ball was a carry back then so it’s hard to dribble closer to your chest when it was like that

      They were still professionals with the highest level of skill. Just like any sport. The frame rate and filming often doesn’t do the players justice.
      Listen to any oldie and they’ll tell you they haven’t seen a certain sportsperson as good as X when they were younger.
      Look at George Best in soccer. Or Pele who was ripping it up in the early 60s.

      Yeah, ball handling was tough when you couldn't palm, carry, travel...And the shot was called the two-handed set shot. When this was filmed, no one had yet invented the jump shot!

    They actually had really good ball movement/passing. High energy and playing with teamwork. Their dribbling and shooting may look awkward but it was affective and surprisingly they had a lot of long distance shots being made.

      Keep in mind you're only seeing the highlights here. If you watch an actual full length game, say probably a Minneapolis Lakers game, you'd be speaking differently. The full length of this game yields a lot of terrible misses, turnovers and bad passes.

      The NBA didn't even start till '47, and obviously it took a while to hit off and really look like a solid game, I'd say by the late 60's but many people don't consider modern NBA till the start of the 80's with Bird and Magic

    Their passing was pretty damn sharp, and even with that weird-ass form they could hit from 30 feet. The scores were low because there was no shot clock and they probably had to pass for 45 seconds to get someone open enough to shoot.

      shooting in general was different mentality it was called a jump shot to differentiate it from a "set shot" where your feet don't leave the ground. both shots have a similar principle of pushing the ball forward towards the hoop

    You can see the haze of smoke above the court...up through the 80's every indoor sport had spectator smoking(it's why old photos sometimes have a dramatic blue light).

    Wow thats AMAZING, didnt know how lost i would be without the floor lines but there were so many plays we still use today, those players were VERY good, you can see screens and off ball move, a lot of fooling the defense. The fact people are in suits make it such a classy game. Crazy to think that was between ww1 and ww2 and those guys saw everything.

      After a High School basketball game last year before they put the balls away. I saw an old man in his 70's hobble out into the corner behind the 3 point line and using the two handed set shot proceeded to hit about 7 out of the 10 shots he launched up.

    Some excellent shooting! The dribbling skills aren’t very developed, but this was a fun video to watch.

      That’s funny. Those guys would say the same about today’s players. Back then dribbling was just that. Turning the ball so as to grip it with wrist action was illegal. Two steps was two steps. Anything more was a travel.

    extremely good ball movement and moving without the ball, dribbling and shooting look awkward but in this time ur hand had to be on top of the ball the whole time while dribbling

    Back in 1939, there was no shot clock in basketball, it would arrive in 1954 to "save" the game.

      That was the NBA. The College game didn't get a shot clock until the 1985-86 season. Also notice that there was no dunking in this game. It took some time for the athleticism to get to the point where dunking, outside of inordinately tall players, started to surface.
