In the series yes, because while beautiful Maren Jensen's acting talents were quite inexperienced and amateurish however. In the Battlestar Galactica novels and comics Athena was more like Lt Sheba who came into the show much later on. And was a much stronger and more independent as a character who voiced her own tactical opinion. Even the show's unshot/unproduced scripts featured Athena in more direct action packed roles where she either lead actual ground missions or was in a Viper squadron herself. In the live-action series Maren Jensen's Athena character was given the bridge officer role near her father Adama and Colonel Tigh instead though.
A total shame! She really should have been given more to do, besides being a 'prop' in the Starbuck Cassiopeia on again/off again, 'romance'. Personally, I think Athena, could've done A 'HELLUVA' LOT BETTER, THAN STARBUCK. With just a smile from her, I would GO UP AGAINST A CYLON BASESTAR, SINGLE-HANDED.

One thing - I've heard it mentioned that Athena as a character was down-graded as a character just for being a teacher, which clearly isn't the case within the context of the series. Judging from the way Boxey is treated by his elders, children are everybody's concern on board the battlestar and everybody takes care of them every once in a while. Boxey wants to be a warrior later and he does indeed become so, and it's to be assumed that this applies to at least some of the other children in the class. She's training the future warriors of the Fleet and that's VERY important work. Plus, it seems that other members of the crew also speak to the children during learning period for the same reason, as seems to be envisioned for Apollo. And in Galactica 1980 Troy and Dillon are also seen to teach school.
Athena being a caretaker for the young children is awesome. Highly feminine. It's a rag tag crew so everyone does their part wherever+ whenever they can; Athena was a pilot, trusted with child care, and of course primarily a bridge officer. In the first episode the pilot soldiers became maintenance crew for radiation leaks on other freight ships. It's a rag tag crew so duties are arbitrarily spread out and everyone does whatever they can, tomorrow she might be a cook.
After seeing the clip it doesn't seem like she can't act it seems like she's so nervous she's sabotaging herself. Someone should have helped her. Athena could have been a great, strong character.
