When I was 15 years old, I always imagined adults at 20s would be doing big things and getting their lives in order. Now that I am in my mid-20s, I feel so stupid for having thought about it that way. I talked to my friends who are in their 30s, being moms and dads, they still sometimes are little insecure children inside not knowing what to do. I then realized that age has nothing to do with our living and archieving, there is no right or wrong way to live a life, and life will all be filled with both happiness, sadness, humiliation, appreciation, etc.
Then I started to feel less scared.

I love this comment. I needed to read this. As a woman just turnt 30 and feel I have done nothing accomplishable in life, always makes me feel so low and like I want to hide. But your right, doesn't matter the age, if I sit and think about it, I know people older then me that still dont have the shit together. We are all just walking along hoping and doing our best :)

It is good that younger people can tap into this wealth of knowledge now, because it could lead to a much brighter and more fulfilled life. I only came across an explanation for what imposter syndrome was, at about 55. It took me several more years of psychological gymnastics to eventually unshakle myself from it. I have not looked back since then, thankfully, because my life was so myserable. I feel that this syndrome is a key characteristic of left leaning types which l was much of my life. I think l must have held a grudge against those who were can-do types, because l was a no l can't do it, it is useless trying, type of person, and that was dangerous, because l thought the can-do's were not taking all the bad stuff going on in the world serously, but ii is just that they were calm about.

i was wondering if that had something to do with our generation...
now i guess the only relation it has with our generation is that we have a thing for trying to communicate how we feel, rather than suck it up and pretend we dont have traumas.
maybe newer generations are fast to get all the technology things, but we are the ones still exploring the internal side of us.
i see it in arbitrary things as people my age not wanting to have kids because they are insecure about parenting...

If you feel this way and know you do this, the question you need to ask yourself is why. Why do you feel like an imposter? Why are you not living as your authentic self? Why do you pretend to be someone others will accept rather than being yourself? Why? It is up to you and within you to change this. As simple as that sounds, it is the hardest thing for many to do. Most people do not want to go deep enough within themselves to answer that question of why, however, that is exactly how they will begin to feel better and gradually become who they wish to be. Just something to think about.
I am a life coach in Rochester, NY. Helping others to find their authenticity and build a life from there, is exactly what I coach people on. I also published a workbook that helps individuals grow their authenticity. If you are interested, you can check it all out at my website at www.selfempowermentcoaching.com

*Here, we have someone who has caught the impostor syndrome.
This is caused by overexposure to Among Us memes. Causing anything said or or similar looking to the game, to be (quoted by people with the syndrome) “sus.”
If you’re trying to comfort a friend or loved one with impostor syndrome, try not to do ANYTHING wrong.
“Heck, people could kill my entire family and I’m forced to maniacally laugh against my will and all I can do is say ‘red sus’!” One stated.
Now this may seem like harmless joke, but according to Jerma, “It all started as so innocent, I used to see something and be like, ‘Oh, that’s looks like something from Among Us! That’s a cool reference.’ But now it’s an uncontrollable insane laugh, when I look at ANYTHING- I see it.”
In order to prevent Impostor Syndrome, follow these steps:
DON’T look at your fingernails or toenails.
DON’T look up the scientific name for pig.
Try not to smile, because most people who smile have the syndrome, so this could make you look like you have it. The reason for this is because you could accidentally make the “sus” face. (Please note: This could also cause you or anyone around you to contract the virus.)
Try not to look at anything red, this may activate a pattern.
Discourage yourself from saying the following words, ESPECIALLY around loved ones with Impostor Syndrome. This could make recovery more difficult, and could cause you to contract the virus also.
      “Sus”
      “Meeting”
      “Vent”
      “Red”
      “Impostor”
      “Emergency”
      “Cams”
And DO NOT say “Among Us” as this is the ultimate trigger. You may be using this in a casual conversation, so use “between us” as an alternative.*

you work so you dont have to kill a gazelle every week to feet your forest family of twelve. Work is a means to stay alive, dont think too intensely about it. Everyone is faking it, and everyone is ok with that and expects it. say, if I was a dentist. But deep in my heart I was a hippy. Would you like it if I walked in with a beard and tie die shirt to work on your mouth? Absolutely not. Same goes for Lawyers or anything. But does this stop you from being you? No! You just need to conquer the thought you have to be anything but yourself. We can all be hippies ln the inside, nothing can stop that.

Thing is, people who know little and are somewhat ignorant, think they know it all. It's because they don't realize how much more there is.
People who know a lot, well educated (formally or informally), think they know very little. It's because they realize how much is out there.

This is by far the best channel on youtube, trying to be as non judgemental as possible, informative and inspiring. There is a lot of hateful, racist, anger and trolling on the internet, people seem to waste their energy and time doing this (I do get angry sometimes when I think that some comments are without foundation; of course I do, but I don't vent or react on it to total strangers on the internet. That's a recipe for disaster and end up in a verbal pile of twaddle). I for one would recommend to explore the "school of life" to redirect some of that wasted energy on thinking about the topics discussed. It is such a breeze to discover that humanity is not only about hate, anger. I don't often comment on-line but I have to on this occasion because it makes me smile and happy. It makes me realise that there are still a lot of wise, compassionate down to earth people around who appreciate the beauty, intelligence and power of the human being.I try to understand why this channel has dislikes, however, this is what "the school of life" is also about; to try to understand why we are all different. This channel shows the great benefits of the internet. Many thanks and keep me thinking and above all; smiling. I am in love with the guy's voice and accent as well ;)

My sincere pleasure, I am looking at your website to buy some nice and unusual items as a Christmas present for my best friends. They will appreciate the "different" yet the "to expected" philosophical gifts in life as I see it. Some of my friends call me crazy (or weird, they probably mean different. Just a guess) well someone has to be. Otherwise there would be no place for the word "crazy/weird" if everyone would act "normal". ;)

Why don't you converse with them and find out why someone believes something other than what you do? Dismissing someone just because they fit in with a "popular term" is degenerate, and only further degrades the priority issues of our society. If we actually took the time and communicated with one another, then maybe they or we will find themselves/ourselves with a bit more of an understanding of our problems, or their own, etc. If it were "wheelist" to say that it would be better to put circular wheels on a wagon rather than square wheels - and everyone refused to talk about it, then how would we ever find out that a circular shape works best for a wagon moving on a flat surface?
Just because something is uncomfortable to talk about, or society has trained you to think a topic is "wrong" does not necessarily mean something *is* wrong. Think for yourself for a change

    • @WolfgangVonKempelen838
      @WolfgangVonKempelen838 7 лет назад +7

Madam/Sir I don't think that I dismissed or mentioned right or wrong in my comment. Neither did I say that I agree or disagree with popular terms. of course some things upset me or make me angry as stated in my previous comment. However, it's not right or wrong because I say or feel so. Some views make people uncomfortable or angry that's just the way it is, whatever the reason.Terms will be used popular or not and I think; it is to indicate rather than to degenerate; in the case of The school of life.I have no problem with people who have different ideas, lifestyles etc. as long as they convey them in a reasonable and non offensive way because that only instigates aggression and can lead to physical violence or worse still. I also think a lot for myself and try to understand the world around me; my dad used to say to me; son, if you want to make the world a better place start with yourself. I am working on it.If I may give a piece of advise; use "I" or "I feel" and "we" or "society" etc. when reacting on a comment. Using "you" might come across as pointing a "judgemental finger" or might feel as a "personal attack" and/or feel "unpleasant" which it does to me. I think that this is exactly what we want to avoid in our exchange of thoughts here.I always try to remember this important detail when I react on a comment on the internet that the other person is a total stranger and doesn't know me. It is not like having a discussion with a friend or family member who knows, tolerates and understand me most of the time. They might even tolerate my shouting or grumpy attitude. A total stranger will not I am afraid. I try to be as careful as I can when I comment; to do it in a reasonable, non aggressive way. I hope I succeeded this time around.

You can read his books, listen to his TED talks ( and many other talks) and watch his documentaries too. He has another youtube channel where you can find those documentaries. Just search for " Status Anxiety", you'll find the channel. If you want to start with one book, I would highly recommend " The Consolations of Philosophy". Have a nice evening. Best wishes:-)

Loved this video! As a child I always dreamt how I had to drive a car and had no idea how, that was basically my biggest fear.
I think we should all be more open about our failures, anxieties, insecurities, imperfections. Everything would be so much easier then. Instead, most people try so hard to constantly sell others a perfect picture of themself. Why so much pressure? Why so much perfection?
That's why I absolutely love people who can laugh about themself, who tell awkward stories about them openly, without any regret and with a smile instead. It's about time to embrace your imperfections with pride!

And that ability to experience is what I believe to be the only thing that makes us unique individuals. There's nothing that can really distinguish your _soul_, for a lack of a better word, from another, apart from the fact that no other _soul_ is right were you are, seeing exactly what you're seeing exactly how you are seeing it, and processing it exactly as you are. Your uniqueness comes from your continued existence. Everything else is just a parameter.

After I suffered a mental breakdown in college and then diagnosed with a neurological condition, for many years I suffered what I suppose you could call imposter syndrome. I felt all my academic achievements leading up to getting into and finishing college were just massive flukes, and that my undiagnosed hidden disability and learning difficulties should have stopped me from getting that far. I even left my college years off my resume when applying for minimum wage jobs because I felt nobody would believe I was college material. I gave myself no credit whatsoever. It wasn’t until about 12 years later I was finally able to look back on this early period of my life and appreciate all that I had done and the stories I could be telling people instead of short changing myself.

"Heck, people could kill my entire family and I’m forced to maniacally laugh against my will and all I can do is say ‘red sus’!” One stated.
      "Sus”
      “Meeting”
      “Vent”
      “Red”
      “Impostor”
      “Emergency”
      “Cams”
And DO NOT say “Among Us” as this is the ultimate trigger. You may be using this in a casual conversation, so use “between us” as an alternative.

You're smart enough to be looking for solutions. I'd recommend not worrying so much and spend more time doing things. The more I ruminate about the past and future the worse off I am personally. When I do things that occupy my mind things are just way better.

Been there as well. Best to just let it slide. I'd recommend travelling (if you can afford to), and "forcing" yourself to work on your creative abilities every day.
I had a period like that, where I just gave up on everything I liked. It was garbage. But I forced myself to get back into what I liked, started playing and learning music again, etc...
Today I finished my exams, I've passed the entry test for a sound-engineering school that I'm going to, and in a month or so I'm moving out of my hometown to go live (and work) away from my roots. Fresh new start :)
Hope you'll grow out of it and that things will get better soon. Good luck out there ;)

I've been told before by my family that I'm making things up or over exaggerating. It's difficult to explain this to people.

I think part of this attitude has to do with being pushed into a specific group/ethnical identity. It's a sort of victim mindset that can only be relinquished by accepting ones failures, anxieties etc. and start setting goals to improve for the future! Great video!

but our culture rewards impostors. in fact a good deal of successful people really are, to some extent, impostors, and that feeling would be entirely adequate.
society as a whole buys into the delusions we have about paragons and professionals, and that creates very, very damaging expectations.
