Owned a Ray5 for a week now... Nothing in the house that's wood has gone without some engraving ;)
That’s awesome! I’m glad you’re enjoying it. I have a new 40watt laser coming any day and I can’t wait to try it out!
This is one of the videos I watched that helped in my decision for this machine. Anyone who reads about the issues I am having PLEASE know this is NOT the norm. This is a great machine!
“I better put this thing away before I engrave the dog.” 😂😂😂
Dog tag!!!😂
Pretty nifty. You can engrave anodized aluminum and glass. Also there is a spray for glass and another one for metals to engrave them black (Cermark). I have also engraved custom dials and scales for woodworking equipment in acrylic. Great fun, thanks for the video.
Thank you, Ron! I’ll be looking into those. I want to do some LED lit acrylic stuff as well.
Great new toy and great video
Thank you, Robert! It’s a lot of fun.
What a great it of kit. Fun, Yes you will have a lot of it. Go for it and enjoy look forward towhat else you will be doing with it.
Thank you! I’ll definitely find projects for this.
Sweet one hope you make a mint off the projects that you do with it. Ohh the possibilities. Just got to keep the dog away 🤣🤣😂😆🤣. As always good luck and God Bless.
Thank you, Mark! My brain is on overload. Everything I see is something that need the laser treatment 😂😬
Nice item to add to your shop. I can see a great opportunity for creating a custom stand for it…I imagine it’s not going to stay on a folding table!
Definitely! I really like how portable it is. You can set it up anywhere.
Wow Jason sawing with deathrays! Now that's cool! Great video thumbs up.
Next up, world domination!😂
Fun Time Over, Now You have to get back to Milling some Lumber..
Love your Logo on that wood cookie!
There are a lot of jobs that'll get done now, I'll bet.
Thank you, Reg! I want to say the sky’s the limit but I’m thinking about trying to burn my logo into my shop floor😬😂😂
@@NorthwestSawyer I'd like to watch that being done.
Hey Jason, You're going to have a lot of fun with your new toy. I don't know if the instructions forewarned about what to be careful of when engraving stay away from any mirrors or chromed items because it will reflect the laser beam backup at you. If you do plastic or acrylic make sure you have plenty of ventilation... It smells pretty bad and my neighbors ask me what was burning in my shop.
Just to be on the safe side keep a fire extinguisher nearby, I set one of my projects on fire by accident. Stay safe and looking forward to more videos.
Thank you, Mark! I just hung a fire extinguisher in my shop a few weeks ago. The laser came with safety glasses which I’ve been using. That piece of walnut had a nail in it and I was worried about it reflecting the beam. So far so good👍👍
@@NorthwestSawyer Hey Jason, I forgot to ask you when are you going to work on your outdoor fire pit shelter that you were talking about?
@@oldschoolmachinist1938 I’m actually stealing some of the beams I had cut for it to put a second floor in my shop.
Put your logo on coasters I would buy some 👍
Done!😬
Daddy got a new toy! That thing is cool!
It sure is!
You're getting all the cool toys!!
I really am! I had no idea how much you could do with these things.
That is one cool unit. The possibilities are endless. I can see why you had to make yourself walk away LOL.
A viewer commented today that he bought one and has lost 5 lbs because he’s been playing with it so much he forgets to eat😂😂
@@NorthwestSawyer LMAO I believe it brother
My thoughts are burning up with possibilities! Nice!
I see what you did there😬
nice add to the shop
Thanks for the video. I have a CNC plasma cutter but your machine looks like fun as well.
Ohhhhh the things I’d make with a CNC plasma😛😛😛

Just click on my name and I have some RUclips videos of some of my art. I used to be a laser operator in a small steel fabrication shop.
Nice video and review. Maybe it's me, I don't see the link in the comments...
Thank you! The link is in the video description. Not the comments.
Hope you have AC in your new shop. Might hit 100 degrees thru Saturday. Happy trails.
Not only do I not have AC, I have a pair of small birds trying to make a nest in my trusses so I can’t open the big doors for a cross breeze😞
Looks really neat, Jason. Should be really useful for you. I've seen several Longers show up on videos lately. Now I want one (I'm just not ready yet). Best wishes for it and congratulations.
Bill
Thank you, Bill! I was a little intimidated by the need to learn the software at first but thanks to RUclips, there is no shortage of great how-to videos. I’m really enjoying this.
Now that is a great tool
The possibilities are endless!
Luckily you removed the cloth…. Lasers and fabric… I don’t know 🎉🎉🎉😊
Jason their is a guy from Australia who has a great channel on laser machines check out would give you great ideas. Rodger Webb is the guy's name.
Thank you, Barry! There are a couple guys who specialize in these. I’ve been watching and learning
Wow, that's an awesome toy/tool
Thank you, Ron!
Great video thanks, I was kind of in between two purchase options and undecided about getting this. But I'm pretty sold now, very nice cut on 5/8"!
Yes! This is a great, inexpensive starter laser. I just reviewed the 20 watt laser from xTool but it’s much more expensive.
JASON, guessin there IS Christmas in July!!!!
Enjoy your new addition, but I think you'll be eating alotta cold dinners !! Lol
I bet I could heat up my meals with this laser!😂
@@NorthwestSawyer hope that's not the case! Just make sure you have an alarm clock set when it's dinner time! Lol
Awesome looking Laser
SO COOL!
Thank you!
That’s great
I want one so bad dude!!! This is so awesome!!!🤯😎⚒️👍
You need one, Nick! I thought of you instantly when I engraved the rock. You could personalize your polished rocks!
@@NorthwestSawyer Dude that's exactly what I need. This is super cool man.🤯😎🔥 Super Duper Awesome Video!!!🥳⚒️🥳⚒️😍🪨🔥
Looks like fun and maybe profitable too!
The sky’s the limit I think. I have some ideas😉
Hey that's pretty cool
It sure is, Grizz!
Not just longer, it looks like the same laser as my sculpfun. Same size frame. Are there different frames you can get like the sculpfun?
I’m not sure if I could add to it. I haven’t actually used it since my 20 watt laser came and now I have a 40 watt. It would make sense that there are common parts used by the less expensive laser manufacturers.
Great to see a video review with a starter laser used on a Mac/iOS platform! So many of the lasers and CNC machines seem to be based on PC platforms. Out of curiosity, it clearly works on odd shaped surfaces like rocks and such, and you can likely put it on platforms for taller material, but can it engrave cups/mugs/tumblers etc? Does Longer have a “roller” adapter for that purpose? Looks like an excellent machine and quite possibly something I’ll follow the link to Jason! Congrats dude 😎
Thank you, Hugh! If you follow the bottom link, you’ll find the accessories page. I believe there is a rotisserie for it.
Wow that's cool as hill.what's the cost.I'll check it out.
This one is on sale for $459 but there’s a discount code for another $30 off until august 15th. I have the link in the description.
Watch out dog! I think he's serious! What a cool toy!!! Should bring in some serious $$$$. Be careful.
Thank you Aaron! The dog is safe…. The rooster though….😂
Is accurate enough to use on inlay work? Would it cut out both the positive and negative image on two different pieces of wood so that you could put them back together? Looks like you are getting the best toys. Thanks for sharing.
Kevin that’s exactly what I was thinking. In the LightBurn program, you can dial in the size of your cut to the thousandth of a mm. I was thinking this would be great for bow ties but any inlay you could make adjustments for the negative and positive cuts.
@@NorthwestSawyer With all of that gorgeous wood you have been cutting, two contrasting colours and grains leaves a world of interesting things you can do. You could make pictures to hang on the wall.
@@kevintulak9987 the options are limitless!
hello can ask what your settings are for cutting 5/8. I have the ray 5 10w Ive been trying to cut 1/4 sanded wood and 1/4 mdf and I cant seem to cut. thank you
That’s awesome. As a sawyer myself, I’m curious how dry the wood has to be before using it?
Are you referring to working with the laser? I wouldn’t thing moisture content would matter but I guess it’s something to test out.
@@NorthwestSawyer I wasn’t very clear in my question. I was wondering how long I would need to let freshly milled lumber dry prior to using the laser engraver or if that would even be an issue. Example: I just milled some green oak. Can I put that in the engraver or does it need to dry to a certain percent moisture level? Thanks for posting.
@@patriots1needed I had a feeling that’s what you meant but sometimes people post a question about a different video and it can be confusing 😬. I honestly don’t think moisture content would be an issue with the laser.
I need me one of them. That is cool.
You do! It’s too much fun.
Confused on why you get another head/laser for free. Do they wear out? Looks cool as hell! I meant module. Thanks
The free one is a 5 watt which used to be the standard. This 10 watt is new and there may be different applications where the lower power works better I’m guessing.
@@NorthwestSawyer Thanks for the reply. I'm going to get one! Thanks again!
@@billrichardsjr awesome! You’re going to enjoy it!
Just wondering what settings you used to cut through the 5/8. I seem to have a hard time cutting through 1/8. I see 100% power but what speed and number of passes?
Boy that’s a good question. I remember going pretty slow. Maybe three passes. It’s one of those things you have to play with and adjust. There are several factors that can affect how the laser performs.
Does the 10 watt come with limit switches?
How did you use it to cut?
Low speed, high power. I have a new 40watt laser I’ll be reviewing soon.
👋🏻.
haha what a cool toy....I mean tool :-)
😂
Great Demo! If you mentioned it in the vid I missed it, but what is the price point on this unit and do they make larger ones???
All that info is in the description. The prices often change so I don’t put them in the video typically. Right now it’s on sale for $459 but there’s a discount code for another $30 off. I think 10watt is the biggest one they have.
@@NorthwestSawyer Yeah, I should read the descriptions more often. Thanks!
I'd have every tool I own engraved!
Is that a dare???😂
@@NorthwestSawyer maybe all the 10mm anyway!
@@jacemusgrove3073 😂😂😂😂
I have this laser but am getting the beep ctrl, flag 0: error. Did you have this issue?
Really? I’ve had no issues at all with mine. I’d imagine it’s something simple but if it keeps happening I’d try contacting them.
@@NorthwestSawyer I did. after 2 weeks they finally responded with Update the firmware. Well I did that already lol
@@NorthwestSawyer I know this is a great laser but it has been one thing after another since the day it arrived. Bought the dual head and didn't receive the 10 W module, finally received this but it was missing the screws needed for to attach it to the focus. No response on that.
Followed the manual to a T. LaserGRBL returned a code of Core 1 Panic'ed.
I kid you not lol
@@robinNC well, shoot! Did it work for you at all or has this been a constant problem? I was completely brand new to the laser engraver scene. I watched a ton of RUclips to figure it out. Have you tried searching the code on google or RUclips?
@@NorthwestSawyer I know .nc code. I had to use it to reverse some of the issues that migrated to the SD card. You can convert the .nc to .gc and load it as well but the controller is bad. I need that replaced
Don't engrave the dog! It won't appreciate it and it'll probably move anyway. Tattooed Dogs however could be the next big thing (not).
It's very impressive especially how thick it will cut through.
Thanks.
No dogs were harmed in the making of this video😂
That's awesome, would you be interested in doing a chunk of walnut for a trophy 🏆 I need to do for a ⛳️🌵🏌🏽♂️tournament next July??
Keep me posted if you would 👷♂️🌲🌳🧡👍👍
Absolutely, Craig! I’ll probably be really good at it by then😂
Awesome, keep up with your new equipment 🧡🧡🧡👍.
