Sweet sounding synth. The SH-1000 is a classic piece of Roland/synth history. Introduced in 1973, it was the first instrument produced by Roland, and probably one of the first compact affordable keyboard synthesizers in all of Japan.
haha! best 135 i ever spent ! a guy comes into my lawnmower shop and was talking about his band . .i mentioned i play and record everything but drums .. he laughs and says "have you ever heard of this stuff called "ambient music" and "there was this guy who started it all called brian eno'.. i held back my laughter and the he says.. "hey maybe you want this synthesizer i got in my garage .. it looks like an organ but its a roland" leaving my "cool card " at home has paid off.. great demo.. ..
I heard some people say some pretty bashful things about this synth. It sounds pretty dang good though, I dont know, maybe its not the synth thats good but the guy thats using it. GREAT JOB, MAN!!!!!
Brilliant Demo. Well done. I can just imagine, some dude back in the early 70's. flairs long hair, droopy moustache, Keyboard player, in a clubbing band, amazing the audience, with the out of this world weird sounds. groovey. LOL .
Great job, you pulled some fantastic sounds from that. I had one of these in the early 80's, was a great little synth. What a difference to the overall sound you made, by adding some delay/echo ! Thanks for posting.
The delay/echo makes a big difference to the output. The one I had was only hooked to a Roland amp with revo, I couldn't afford the echo systems of the day. Sold it for an electric piano so I could go back to playing chords.
Great demo of the SH-1000! I bought mine used at a musical flea market for $50 sometime back in the late 1980's! I enjoyed it for several years and used it for demo recordings and jam sessions! It was accidently knocked from its stand and busted up in the early 1990's! : ( I eventually sold the pieces to a neighbor for $25!
indeed. you don`t. get one of these old machines, take it into service work (if necessary) and hook it up with a digital, noise-free fx-machine (a cheap one will do like the nux "cerberus"). welcome to the real world, neo. :)
I have this synth. Believe me WITHOUt the DEP-5 it only sounds GOOD. As demonstrated here, WITH the DEP-5, good grief, it sounds FANTASTIC! I'm off to EBAY to get me an DEP-5 to use with mine! Thanks analogAudio1!
No, the first instrument produced by Roland was the TR-77 rhythm machine in 1972, followed by the TR-55 and TR-33, all in 1972. The SH-1000 was the first self contained keyboard synthesizer by Roland and Japan in 1973.
They are almost all a little different. SH1000 diode based ladder filter SH2000 the moog clone SH5 multiple filters SH2 BA662 same as earlier Jupiter 4 SH101 IR3109 the Juno filter, more 80's smoother sounding to name some, they all sound pretty different ... SH1000, SH1 and SH2 are my favs
XD
My question is, how much of this is the actual synth and how much is the effects processor? It's sure adding a lot because the synth all by itself isn't making all those crazy sounds... I've heard these many times and without any added effects they're super cheesy
I have one of these, but one day it just stopped turning on. I don't know why. Does anyone know approximate how much it would cost to be serviced by a pro?
Drew Kane depends what went wrong with it, usually if you take it to someone they will charge a small fee to look and diagnose the issue then go ahead to fix it after they speak with you about the full cost
Drew Kane well this scumbag tech would tell you where to go if you turned up with that attitude. How bout you learn electronic engineering and do it yourself then tell us what you would like to be paid for your services so you can eat and have a roof over your head.
+Ari Ahrendt how impressive would sound the finest electric guitar pure? Without any treatment like effects or amp? ;-) Well, on most recordings, synthesizer were equalized and mixed with effects in the studio. It's also the case with voices... The FX alone would not sound that good :-)
I think this is the best sounding synth demo I've found on youtube. Even if part of the overall sound came from the DEP-5 effects unit attached, it's still fantastic sounding [ and playing.! ]
I bought one of these and it turned me into a non-fan. Try playing it dry. The synth has no FX in it. It has a passel of preset voices that are mostly useless without a lot of FX. Did I mention that the synth has no FX on it? As in no delay, reverb, and whatever else you've got going on there. I also had tuning problems with it. It was unstable to temperature changes. So, OK, enjoy it as a piece of history. As someone who owned one for live performance use, IMO it was next to useless to me. I gave it away.
Did you really expect a multi FX section with delay, reverb in a monophonic synth from 1973 ?? :-D Back in the day effects were added in the mixing process, and they were all analog, big and expensive... I wouldn't say a synth is useless without effects. You could anytime add your own and much better ones. Back in the day, synths were like vintage cars or vintage mixing consoles: they had less features, but the really important ones. And if you were a good musician (not a noisemaker), you could do great music with it.
I made some kind of piece of electronic music to show you an example of what can be done with the SH1000 in hands of a musician. In my opinion that's the purpose of a demo video. And I felt like adding these effects.
I can’t get enough of this demo. Should be a whole album of just this. I’d buy it.
Love it. just imagine playing this back in 73, you'd think the aliens had landed, and how do you get such a big sound from a small box. great demo.
thanks!

Love the sound of these first gen synths like the SH here and Korg 700 etc Very unique and deeply under rated.
Had one of these-mid seventies-did all kinds of things with it- including bass lines in a country-rock band when no bass player showed up (!)
haha! best 135 i ever spent ! a guy comes into my lawnmower shop and was talking about his band . .i mentioned i play and record everything but drums .. he laughs and says "have you ever heard of this stuff called "ambient music" and "there was this guy who started it all called brian eno'.. i held back my laughter and the he says.. Beautiful! What an incredibly versatile little synth.
My first Roland!!
Roland's first Roland even ;)
I heard some people say some pretty bashful things about this synth. It sounds pretty dang good though, I dont know, maybe its not the synth thats good but the guy thats using it.
GREAT JOB, MAN!!!!!

Dude that nails the Frankenstein sound effects right on the head!!!!

i have had one of these for 15 years,..amazing synth!!!...with a off the planet filter!!
What amazing sounds!
Nice demo!
@AnalogAudio1 The filter in question is a 24db/oct ladder filter (like Moog) but with diodes instead of transistors (unlike Moog).
This is an excellent demo of one of my favorite synths.
thank you!
Great demo of the SH-1000!

My goodness it sounds so good! I am beginning to think I don't need and FM/wave table synth anymore.
indeed. you don`t.

great psychedelic sounds
I WANT ONE AGAIN I LOVE IT . VERY COOL WELL DONE .
i am glad you used the word "underrated" here.
Incredible sounds, considering it's size
Great video. At 1:17 mins can hear the lead sound from gorgio moroder’s brilliant midnight express film theme 😊
The sound at the beginning is very spacy and atmospheric!
0:55 That's... just beautiful
Beautiful.

Says the first synthesizer, yes an analogue drum machine is a synthesizer but wouldn't usually call it that.
I'm happy to lay here listening to you noodle...Sooooothing!
It was also used by Claudio Simonetti on Goblin's "Il fantastico viaggio del bagarozzo Mark"
Proper Analog!!
Wow!
It seems to have the best sounding filter of the Sh series. Maybe is it different from the other Sh brothers?
They are almost all a little different.
SH1000 diode based ladder filter
SH2000 the moog clone
SH5 multiple filters
SH2 BA662 same as earlier Jupiter 4
SH101 IR3109 the Juno filter, more 80's smoother sounding
to name some, they all sound pretty different ...
SH1000, SH1 and SH2 are my favs
I’m sure I still have an old cassette of me playing one in about 78 🙀🤯
I have made the best white noise snares ever on this synth...bought it for $100 in the 90's then sold it as it had no memory and MIDI!
hey those tapes!! old times!
Does it have built in delay or feedback options?
no, the SH-1000 was played with additional effects (see video description).
If you go and watch Mike Oldfield's live video Exposed - Incantations Part 1 you can see this synthesiser in action. :)
What kind of effect (I guess the DEP-5 FX is a multieffect) did you actually put on that?
Wow what a lovely synth! Love your videos. :)
What are your favorite synths btw?
it's a tough question... actually I like a lot of synths, there is no "best synth"

locos, lo que es emulator, roland, korg, y algunas casio, son joyas , jamas se deben vender, o al menos vender a un bajisimo precio
Génial
I have one of these in my loft.
Must get it down and set it up with my Arturia Micro Brute, Waldorlf Blofeld n Volca beats !
Theres nothing to setup, it doesnt even have midi....
Jordy Simons So? Great instrument to solo on! Or multitrack! People did make music on it back in the day, no reason you can't now.
Had one for a few years back in mid 80's. Was a ton of fun to play with. Now I wish I had kept it.
Totally kool
My question is, how much of this is the actual synth and how much is the effects processor? It's sure adding a lot because the synth all by itself isn't making all those crazy sounds... I've heard these many times and without any added effects they're super cheesy
you could say that from an electric guitar as well...
introduction 'song'??
@myrmur
wow
that's exactly what i wanted to type
this is ridiculously buff
Sounds a lot like my PS-1000:D
I have one of these, but one day it just stopped turning on. I don't know why. Does anyone know approximate how much it would cost to be serviced by a pro?
Drew Kane depends what went wrong with it, usually if you take it to someone they will charge a small fee to look and diagnose the issue then go ahead to fix it after they speak with you about the full cost
Yeah, but how much is a "small fee" for this sort of thing? I dont want to get ripped off by some scumbag keyboard tech.
Drew Kane well this scumbag tech would tell you where to go if you turned up with that attitude. How bout you learn electronic engineering and do it yourself then tell us what you would like to be paid for your services so you can eat and have a roof over your head.
yes and you show it off well..
like hearing but not seeing "godsyntha" coming to destroy your town.. godzilla's musical cousin ..
@migger248 check ultimae french
dude you creeped the fukk out of me 03:00
It's a reverb/delay fx demo,
rather synth demo..
At least I may add, the fx is also Roland ;-)
@@AnalogAudio1,
Great! You make any old crap sound like the top end gear!
I love your videos! Keep it up!
2.35
Mostly we only hear good delay and reverb FX. Not the synthesizer. Because the pure sound isn't that impressive. It's just the added FX.
+Ari Ahrendt how impressive would sound the finest electric guitar pure? Without any treatment like effects or amp? ;-) Well, on most recordings, synthesizer were equalized and mixed with effects in the studio. It's also the case with voices... The FX alone would not sound that good :-)

While effects can make any synth sound good, it's not a fair representation of it's true sound, which, IMO, is the purpose of a demo.
I made some kind of piece of electronic music to show you an example of what can be done with the SH1000 in hands of a musician. In my opinion that's the purpose of a demo video. And I felt like adding these effects.
Jean Michel Jarre, probably have used this.
he never used this, although it is a great monophonic synth.
+Almir Rogerio da Silva No Jarre, but Vangelis use this synth
Guillermo Moran That's what I thought ... Jarre or Vangelis, now you enlightened me.
I too
