This is Phoebe, she presented with severe 'itching' that would get worse when she was excited or when she was scratched around her neck. Her skin and ears are perfectly normal and we suspect she actually has syringomyelia-a malformation of her skull that causes compression of the brain. The 'itching' is actually a form of a focal motor seizure. The owners also report that she often circles and stares at the wall and holds her head to one side. She is headed to the neurologist for an evaluation and MRI.
It makes me so sad and angry what breeders have done to these adorable dogs....the poor hearts, the deafness in later life - all the things they suffer with is bearable...but syringomyelia is so cruel on these dogs!
I feel the same way. This is unethical, inhumane, and sadistic.
breeders charge you $2000-$2500 for Cav puppies then you will need to spend thousands in Vet bills to care for them, madness. Norway has now banded the breeding of Cavaliers
It is seriously sad how norway has done this, perhaps to many home breeders, there and not doing the right tests, however it is good there is a governing body to ensure if they are not doing it right, it is not permitted!
@@SashyB Heart mitral valve disease (MVD) is a terminal illness which may afflict over half of all cavalier King Charles spaniels by the age of 5 years and nearly all Cavaliers by age 10 years. It is CKCSs' leading cause of death.
"Good breeding" with present lines does not really help, at this point it is genetic trait passed down to all. Do some research.
@Je P. Unfortunately, there are limited treatment options for this genetic disease. Here is a great site for learning about clinical signs and diagnosis. Look up cavalierhealth (org) then click on syringomyelia.
How many years do they live?
My dog, also has syringomyelia, she will be 4 years old in March. Her "spot" is on her left side of her neck right behind her head. She scratches uncontrollably and also screams. She is on a steroid, prednisone, and also an anticonvulsant med. The prednisone helps, but it is a steroid and the longer she is on it the worse it is for her. She has now become bloated and looks like a cute puff ball.
What does it mean stimulating her spot. My Pomeranian has SM2 and he has that spot at that same place. What does that mean?
i know isnt it sad that it was done that way too
Also when a puppy is showing all the classic signs what do you do for it?
do several things, people are fobbing off SM when it can often be a food sensitivity so do the 450 food test sensitivity test first.. post that once settled if still air scratching etc, then have them scanned to be 100%
How do you know when a young puppy has it?
i need help my Cavalier King Charles started throwing up and started walking ( looks like in ) 2:19 but he never skrashes often or drags his head all over our house ...
sorry if my english is bad ... im in a hurry to school and im so afraid for im scared of loosing him from my life and yes we will take him to the vet
Try some Cooked Carrots in edition to it's food
the dog should be fine
Why would you say that? This is caused by a skull deformation and a buildup of spinal cord fluid. Cooked carrots can't fix that, dude.
it ended up beeing a blod thing in his brean and hes fine now but his hearing is very bad now but its okay
Cooked carrots! What!? ru smoking that stuff
@@jonathanbraswell6308 it it was a digestive issue cooked carrots probably would have helped
aweee a dog has chiari and now i really dont feel aloje
The dog looks overweight, is it because of her illness?
Partly due to the lack of ability to walk normal. Having to stop every few feet to scratch or hop. She is now on 400 mg of gabapentin a day which causes weight gain as well. Up dated Feb. 3rd 2017
Try some Cooked Carrots in edition to it's food
the dog should be fine
That does not cure or treat this condition in most dogs with this condition.
Are you stupid? You seriously think carrots cure syringomyelia?
