I used to love the combat in Spartacus ( I haven't played in a while), it also had the ability to bet on other people's combat.

I enjoyed playing poker with the dice. The storytelling and getting to choose which path to go in what reminded me of the encounters in Scythe were great parts of this game.

As one of the people putting together those crazy combos, 100% it is super satisfying. Though I think my favorite mechanism is the events in combination with getting and achieving a quest. I loved getting the horse through this in our play.

You had some huge turns! 10 damage out of the gate on one of them. It was awesome to see. Thanks for teaching and playing it!

Currently playing a 4-player game of this but have to split it to two evenings. It plays best at 2-3 because of the downtime. I do like how the card row cost is implemented and there's a location action that allows burning a couple of cards before to play with the cost before buying. As another commenter mentioned, the add-ons really enhance the game. I consider the Monster Trail essential. I recommend adding the Adventure packs, bombs, and mutagens after the first game (we added them from the get-go). I like how the mutagen cards help guide the deck-building. Sadly, I will probably sell my all-in KS copy soon because it takes too long to play.

I really liked the combat system, too. Although I found it somewhat difficult because the randomness of card draw to get a meaningful attack combo.

I love the Witcher old world and it’s a 10/10 for me. I personally had an idea for a game rolling around in my head with a very similar card combat feeling so when I saw this one I jumped all in. The only negative thing I can say about it is that the expansions elevate the game soooo much that the base game feels lacking in comparison. I’ll never play without the advanced action cards and bombs and the special attacks for each monster drastically help with making the combats feel different.
I’ve heard you say in the past that you never hold back from your game designs with expansions in mind and only after seeing the end product hit mass market gaming tables do you consider expansions. The creators of this game definitely didn’t take that approach. To anybody, no matter your feelings after a play of the base game, I would say try with some expansions…it’s so much better.

That's neat to know about the expansions! I wasn't aware of them.

It runs a little long, so it can be difficult to get to table. But The Witcher Old World has been a hit with just about everyone I've shown it to. You're right, the combat is really satisfying. I was a big fan of being able to challenge anyone to dice poker. Since you can only gamble 1 coin, it prevents anyone from tanking their efforts with a bad decision. So at worst it's a minor inconvenience. And something about watching other people wager on a game of luck tends to be engaging for everyone at the table.
I know you're generally opposed to combat orientated games, so I was curious about how you felt with the inclusion of PvP? Most of our group shys away from conflict, but if someone was close to winning we generally had a Witcher vs Witcher fight, to go out with a bang. 😂

I'm glad you're enjoying The Witcher! I like the PvP here because you don't lose anything from combat--in fact, if you lose, you improve your deck thanks to the experience. I think that's great. I'd love to see more net-positive combat in games!

My wife and I really enjoy playing this one. Its great at two players and because you dont need to fight other Witchers we arent forced into direct combat in order to win, which we both appreciate. Its also fairly light in strategy so we can just enjoy the ride and the stories that pop up in the event deck. Totally with you on the card combos in combat, SO satisfying!
