  • In this video we’ll be riding along with an Altoona based helper crew for the day as they push two trains overs the slopes and return back home. During this time of recording, CR was expanding the Galitzin tunnels to accomidate 2 tracks instead of one. Lots of other neat action will be seen during these rides so be on the look out.

    That was a really good era. The crews and workers were so friendly. I was invited up into Alto tower in Altoona and spent the afternoon watching the behind the scene activity. I really miss "Big Blue". It was a great time to be a Railfan.

      you ain't wrong. I visited Cresson and Horseshoe Curve for the first time when I was a kid in 1998 during the Conrail split. First time I ever saw helper operations. I"ll never forget it. I grew up in Ohio , so mountain operation isn't a thing

    Oh yeah a time period when American Railroading was still Great, given the GE Dash 9 units and Quality logo on the hoods I would say 1992-time frame given it only took 2 years for the Gallitzin New Portal Tunnel to be complete. As at that point I was working at Enola Yard Harrisburg PA 130 miles North of Altoona. Greatest days of my life working on Conrail. SD40-2 and SD45-2 were Conrail's work horse of Helper Power on the Curve. Good to see MG Tower looking so Healthy sadly that can't be said now a days such a shame looks now. 52:45 Helper Cut-off run around track to AR-Tower to track 1 aka the "Slide". Great Video Thanks means a lot.

      That 2-cycle EMD 645 sound never gets old. So nice to see spartan cab EMDs here, instead of today's non visually appealing widecab GE/Wabtec locos.

    This is what I call EPIC!! The 90's was just the best time for railroading and being a huge fan!! The fact that you have this is absolutely priceless. A memory you will cherish forever!! What is even more astounding is that you have a brand new Juniata built and painted SD60I 5648 in your consist which that locomotive was completed there on 08-11-1995 the day before you filmed this. That is what I call spectacular!! You visited the best locomotive facility in the country at the time ran by the greatest class one railroad to exist. The days of CONRAIL are sadly missed and this depicts what a class act they were. The people of CONRAIL made CONRAIL and railfanning great!! Depressing to see what it is today.

    All the guys in Altoona who were around for the Conrail days prefer Conrail over NS. NS does a lot of head-scratching moves that makes people not want to work there. Working on the RR is not for everyone.

    • @TK-ec5bv
      @TK-ec5bv 5 месяцев назад +2

      Conrail was a better RR than NS is, on a number of measures.

      David Goode of NS made some false promises to Conrail workers, like claiming that the Hollidaysburg car shop would stay open, when in fact it closed not long after NS took over this part of Conrail. David Goode was not nearly as good of a CEO as Wick Moorman was. Not surprising, given that he was a tax attorney and had no operations or MOW background the way Wick Moorman did.

    I had the opportunity to ride a coal shove out of Brunswick Maryland to Mt Airy,we had 4 GP units on the rear,where I was riding.As we approached the tunnel through Mt ,Airy two head end units failed.The helper crew ran out of time and we had to take a cab back to Brunswick.
