I realized I don't have a fire extinguisher in my home and decided I probably should. Not knowing anything about fire extinguishers, I searched for how to use a fire extinguisher and came across this video. I want to sincerely thank the City of Asheville and the Asheville Fire Department for producing it. The video was very informative and answered all my questions in addition to showing me how to correctly use a fire extinguisher. I have since bought two extinguishers, one 10 pound ABC extinguisher for the main section of the house, and another 4.5 pound ABC extinguisher specifically for the kitchen and pantry. I'm hoping I never have to use either of them, but if I do... I believe I have been well prepared thanks to the Asheville Fire Department.
This very well may be the best how-to extinguisher video available. It should be recommended especially to safety managers and business owners. Thank you CityofAsheville
I've been in the fire extinguisher industry for 43 years and this is one of the best videos on fire extinguishers for the end-user I have seen. Excellent work!
Grant Pell I had the same question, which is what lead me to this video. It looks like they are easy to break as it showed it breaking when she pulled the pin.
But someone else suggested breaking and discarding the plastic tie prior to mounting and NOT dealing with it when you are trying to put out a fire. If the extinguisher is securely mounted, what's the plastic tie for anyway. The pin stops you from squeezing the trigger.
thanks , I have this paranoia that somebody will accidentally light themselves on fire at like a bbq or something and I wont know how to use the extinguisher
All the videos on this subject including this video fail to teach you the most important point. Most if not all the fire extinguishers you buy at the store come with a plastic tie holding the pin in place. But unless you have something to cut that plastic tie with, you can't pull out the pin which makes the extinguisher useless during an emergency. In other words the instructions should warn you to cut the plastic tie after you purchase the fire extinguisher.
Thank you! I was thinking this exact same thing! Can someone else confirm that the plastic tie should be cut and removed prior to mounting and NOT when there is a fire? So then the only left to remove is the pin. Makes sense to me.
That plastic tie called tamper seal. It must be there to keep the pin in place and it’s so delicate it breaks easily when you pull off the pin. Regardless, this point should have mentioned in the video.

I assume the beaded plastic pin ties are all easy to break? Home and business extinguishers?
Grant Pell I had the same question, which is what lead me to this video. It looks like they are easy to break as it showed it breaking when she pulled the pin.
I would be inclined to keep a strong pair of scissors with the fire extinguisher anyway.

Point taken. Cut the plastic tie holding the pin in place after purchase.

This video was good and informative; however, we can all do without the music. It actually made listening to her instructions more difficult.
Is she a ventriloquist?
