    I long for the days of wearing Levi 501s. I bought a pair recently and I couldn't believe how low of quality they are today vs the ones I wore 35 years ago. They took a good five to seven washings to get the stiffness out. I'm sure they were 14 to 16 oz denim. And after five years of wearing I sold them for export to Japan. 😅. Now to get jeans of equal quality people have to pay $150 today. Sheesh.

      You can still get good quality 501s. There are 3 lines of Levi 501s. Standard, Premium, and Vintage. The standards are the basic $40 jeans. The Premium line of 501s cost between $70-$100 and they are higher quality. The vintage line is even better but they will cost several hundred dollars.

    Great review, I'm about 50 wears into my Samurai 211 here in Oz with roughly the same amount of fading & loving them. The ones we get here from Corlection still have the red tab on the back pocket that isn't allowed in the US & are unsanforized so after a warm soak the leg twist is a bit more pronounced & they have stretched back out compared to the one wash versions you get in the States. For reference my 32 waist started out at 33.5 before sanforizing & shrank to 30.25 so I had to put a block of wood in there at my waist size (31.5) for drying. Sounds a hassle but definitely get the unsanforized versions if you can as you really do get the size nailed when you wear them in & end up with possibly the comfiest stiff denim ever 😃

    • @Stridewise
      @Stridewise  4 года назад

      That block of wood is a good tip! I should do an article on tips for stretching jeans :) Glad you like yours!

    • @gaj5701
      @gaj5701 4 года назад +1

      @@Stridewise No worries, I've owned Japanese denim since 1998 when I bought a pair of Evisu Lot 1 so have had a bit of experience with sizing on different models & weights, sanforized & unsanforized. The wood cut to the desired waist size is really necessary on first soak of unsanforized denim as I've found the general rule of sizing up based on the stated waist size to not be that accurate in reality, but will be just as useful on 'one wash' pairs like yours when you do wash/soak them. Many unsanforized jeans will say 32" waist, but I've found that's generally for after soaking as beforehand they often measure in the mid 33" range, as these Samurai ones did & then shrink to around 30" so they can relax back out to roughly 32" with wear (or a block of wood in there when soaking). The way I size my unsanforized denim, after quite a few pairs, with the luxury of trying them on, is to ignore the waist size stated on the jeans & just ensure I can get 2 fingers in the waistband at the hip & also sit down in them pre-soak. That way I know after soaking with the wood block to limit waist shrinkage, they can relax to this kind of size in the areas that need to around hips, butt & knees with a bit of wearing in. Many online retailers like Corlection do a good job of providing comprehensive pre-soak measurements (in the picture gallery of the jeans on Corlection) nowadays so if you know what works for you, it's easier to make an educated guess than ever before.

    • @AaronsRandomLife
      @AaronsRandomLife 4 года назад

      Stridewise I actually haven’t ordered the SDA yet, I’m working with Okayama to get the fit right, as I’ve never had non-sanforized denim before. As far as Japan Blue, I have the JB0601 and JB0606. Like you, I have a bigger butt and thigh that tapers down to a narrower ankle. I went by the measurements on Okayama’s website and found them to be generous. I would recommend going a size down as they will stretch. I have a 34.5” waist and ordered jeans that measures 34.6”. I haven’t washed them and after 10 wears each, they’re a little loose everywhere. For you, I’d order any model in the High Tapered cut if you’re looking for form fitting but not skinny fit. I’ll dm you on Instagram and we can talk more.

    Vanity sizing is the stupidest thing I've ever heard of, especially for men's clothes -- I consider myself man enough to confront a tape measure without needing to be lied to to save my fragile ego. It's like mislabeling the speedometer on a car so people can pretend they're doing 200mph down the highway. Like people are gonna go, "huh, I guess my gut is smaller when I wear Levis... I'm gonna keep wearing Levis!" All they are doing is necessitating an additional size chart so you can find out what "32 inches" actually means.

    Samurai and the old Flathead have my fave back pocket arcs. The old Flathead arc you could take a seam ripper and remove the double ended tail and they would look exactly like Levis. I remember Levi’s threatened to sue or something so all the Japanese import pairs had to be made w/o them, The only way you could get red tabs and arcs was ordering directly from Japan through a proxy on Rakuten or having someone bring a pair back for you. We’ve come along way w/ all the online stores we have now.

    The front rise looks very low on these 211's. I have a pair of 510XX in 19 oz denim weight and like them for winter. I prefer a fairly standard 501 replica straight leg cut and was considering the 710's but they looked mid rise and fairly slim.

  • @bobbydavis5119
    @bobbydavis5119 3 года назад

    I think you should look into the japan blue circle line or the full count choice lines. They have the modern straight/taper you need and for cheaper. If i was your build i wouldn't wear samurai unless it's a 510 or 500 and their 510s are a 66 cut meaning it's slimmer and tapered and their 500s are a 79 cut mid rise and almost super skinny. You should size up in your PBJ'S tapered 13 and 19s because they look tighter than normal. But if you like it, i love it.

    • @Stridewise
      @Stridewise  3 года назад +1

      Thanks! I love my PBJ 019s and I actually sized down for my second pair of 019s that are light blue! Maybe everyone thinks my jeans are too tight and I never noticed!

    • @bobbydavis5119
      @bobbydavis5119 3 года назад

      @@Stridewise to me they are too tight. I have a pair of 19s and nc-011bk and i sized up because of the cut. I would give the new samurai 510s a spin because of the new/old 66 cut. Samurai is making everything slimmer than before so that should be right up your alley. I'm going to get those 20th anniversary 510s and be done with selvedge because everyone is going smaller.

    The waist measurement, at least at the jeanswear company I worked for, isn't taken at the waistband of the jeans (jeans actually sit closer to your hip than your waist).
    "Waist" is a measurement of your body circumference at your "natural waist", which is about 3-4 inches higher. The "In Seam", however, is usually measured on the garment. It's weird. I know.

      Hey, no pressure! These kinds of jeans do last longer than Levis but I think it's also the imagery they evoke that a lot of guys like: an old man hand stitching something after decades of devotion to his craft... kind of the same thing that gets guys into boots :)

    Just got the s520xx with the 21oz cho-kiwami fabric, oh my lord its soooo comfy for a heavyweight, the only thing i would say is that this fabric kinda feel similar to the iron heart’s 21oz XHS, but with moreeee character since they’re quite slubby (not to that extreme), but i found that they’re quite soft for a 21oz (ofc it came one wash)

    From a UK standpoint that seems a ridiculous price. I am buying Yorkshire/Lancashire jeans made specially and woven in England for what seemed excessive as £150.

    I'm genuinely curious what the appeal of Japanese/high end denim/selvedge vs traditional retailer jeans like Levis? I've been seeing a growing trend on male fashion forums but from my point of view it seems like comfort is a big trade off (not to mention the crazy prices) plus not washing seems a little weird to me.

    • @thebun
      @thebun 4 года назад

      The quality of the denim and the long-wear factor makes them worth the money. Sure, comfy denim is comfy, but those Jean's tend to wear out and fade in not a good way. Raw denim still looks good, sometimes better, when it is worn and faded.

    that regular taper doesn't look good on you, your thighs are way to muscular. straight fit would suit you best.

    • @Stridewise
      @Stridewise  4 года назад

      That's what they call a compli-sult! You tell me I don't dress well while I also telling me I'm muscular, haha. This is relaxed tapered, I'll admit they don't fit quite as well as some of my other relaxed tapered jeans and they're a bit tight on the thighs. But I personally (and this is just me) don't like straight leg fits, I just really prefer the way a taper looks, just because it follows the shape of the body more.

      @@Stridewise these types of fits, made by samurai, iron heart, etc. do not fit great for us westerners. I think you should seek a more repro cut. I'm not trying to rain on your parade or anything, but I do not think they are flattering. I would recommend the 1947 cut by sugar cane, warehouse 1001, or real mccoys lot 001 for a more slim, but still full leg cut. I think the combination of a mid rise with the leg taper doesnt work well. I think a nice fitting full leg with a high rise would look much better for your body type. Just my 2 cents!
