The last decade has seen impressive achievements in AI, spurred by big data, advancements in computing technologies, and the development of deep learning. However, applications in critical and complex areas, such as healthcare or science, are still limited by the inability of these algorithms to provide human-understandable explanations or incorporate existing knowledge. In this talk, I will discuss the limitations of a data-only view of AI, supported in real use cases in healthcare and biomedical sciences, and how these can be overcome by taking a knowledge-centered approach where data is enriched with context and meaning, that is both useful for humans and machines.
