  • I was boating on Candlewood Lake, October 2nd, 2013 and had stopped for lunch on a small island when this aircraft flew overhead, then made a turn for a landing approach.
Note copilot waving as he passed by about 100 feet from me. Awesome!

Look at those wing tip vorticies in the water mist. Really cool, they look like doughnuts. :D

Just came across this video--I don't live far from Candlewood Lake--wish I had been there!--I was lucky enough to have flown on the smaller Grumman Goose in the Virgin Islands decades ago

Looks like the long wing version with aux tanks slung underneath the wings, that baby is set up to cover some distance.

Nope, not a long-wing. You can tell because the trailing edge is fully tapered. the long-wing's inboard extensions are square and not tapered, so it interrupts the trailing edge taper. The long-wing also removes the leading edge slats at the wingtips. Lastly, the long-wing's ailerons, rudder and elevator don't go all the way to the tips of the wing/v-stab/h-stab respectively because all of those surfaces are extended past the control surfaces.
      So she's a short-wing.

I Use to see them fly over my house everyday when I was a kid. The US Coast Guard had a fleet of about 10 that operated out of Opa Locka air base when the Cuban missile crisis was happening. I knew the sound of them big Wright's R1820'$ and I run out of the house every time just to see them. They don't build Aircraft like that anymore!!!

Oh my God!! This is beautiful!! I can't help but noticing that the livery of this Albatross is a nod to the one that the B314 Yankee Clipper and the M130 used to sport back in the days. Am I right? Thanks a bunch for posting!

That was the "neutrality" livery when we were supposedly neutral prior to entering WWII

There's actually 4 Grumman amphibians. From smallest to largest:
      - Widgeon, 200-270 hp
      - Goose, 450 hp
      - Mallard, 600 hp
      - Albatross, 1,450 hp

Where is Candlewood Lake? Is it in central Connecticut? Thanks. Just wondering why the plane would be in that area.
