Thanks for the question. I have used a mix of akadama, pumice and lava stone, with a little agricultural carbon. Beneath the tree the mix is quite coarse and in a 1:1:1 ratio, but then it is filled with 2:1:1 in SMALL particles. This promotes more water retention at the surface of the container, encouraging more surface roots. The MEDIUM particles at the base promotes more oxygen exchange and reduced water retention to ensure root rot (phytophtera) does not become a concern.
