Me too. I always joke with my husband that if I become a widow, I will take the insurance money and go to live in Amish country. I would be perfectly happy to live this way. I don't need all the technology and materialism. My ancestors were pilgrims and pioneers, and as crazy as it sounds, the 2 weeks my family had no power were the best we had as a family. We were living in a log cabin on a lake with a fireplace, and cut off by road flooding from stores and everything. Every day I made more candles, boiled water for dishes and cooking, while my son gathered kindling, chopped firewood etc. to get everything done by sunset. At night we gathered around the fire while I read to my son, and made candle wicks, scrubbed clothes,. I got to dig out my great grandmothers cookbooks about how to cook over an open fire, and her antique oil lamps packed in crate since ww2. I have never seen my family work together as a United team as well before or since. My son had a new sense of independence and self esteem by being put in charge of the fire, and not letting it go out, and banking it. I'm not saying I yearn for a catastrophe, but that this way of living has a lot to be said for it. There was no laying in bed worrying about your emails, or cell phone, or any of that, and when work was done for the day it was done and everyone relaxed. No one was texting me at 11pm expecting an immediate response. People banded together and helped each other and no one cared about stupid nonsense like what the Kardashians were doing. I think I could retire quite nicely in this lifestyle, lol.

Maybe that is the case. But also, if everyone is forced to dress the same, then you do lose a bit of your individuality.
You don't have to buy your personality as you mentioned. But forcing everyone to look the same is not really the answer.
Glad the Amish are happy with thier lifestyle, but I definitely wouldn't recommend it.

    • @speeeee35
      @speeeee35 4 года назад +7

Ok but to be fair clothes also allow you to express yourself in every situation whether you are speaking to the people you’re passing by or not. So, I do agree to an extent what you’re saying... and obviously were trained to think these things have VALUE when they don’t... but I think you’re more thinking about society making us believe we need certain brands of clothes or certain labels to make people think we have some value or level of success. In that case, I agree that that’s totally fabricated (no pun intended lol).
But, in reality, clothes also allow you to express yourself without speaking.
It’s like an art for some of us who are into fashion (I’m not into buying fashion. I’m a designer so I design, make as well as upcycle my own clothes, and also have my own business where I sell my wearable art... I’m not being pompous lol that’s the best category to describe it hahaha). It builds confidence to walk around the mall or wherever and know you’re presenting yourself in the way that you want people to think of you. It doesn’t MATTER but to make like it isn’t a form of expression and is that is solely a lie is a bit silly. It very clearly is a way to express yourself. I know people who only shop at the Salvation Army and never buy anything more than a few dollars.
Why do you think the FIRST thing cults do is make everyone strip and change into the same outfit as everyone else? To remove identity and any feelings of individuality. It’s a manipulation tactic to make them feel like a herd instead of an individual.
Don’t get me wrong, agree to disagree. Just giving my opinion as someone who designs (affordable) clothes 🙂

Technology has created so much convenience, and yet there seems to be an aimlessness in the youth with each succeeding generation. There is an emptiness within themselves which they try to fill in with constant chatter through social media. There is no purposeful activity. I feel youth ages 12-and up ought to be allowed to work for example 3 hours 1x a week at a local bookstore and earn money. Cooped up in school, studying tests, more homework, just hanging with their age peers what are they learning. Once upon a time in the previous generations youth worked along side adults.
Apprenticeships ought to be brought back. Not everyone is meant for university.

June Henderson I don't view God or any deity like that. Once upon a time youth could be apprenticed at age 14. Modern city youth maybe sophisticated with technology, and all the material things they acquire/desire even though their families may not have the finances. The Amish are not perfect, but in regards to practical self-reliance and interdependence they have it down. The youth by the time they are 18 can build and fix anything in a home, the young women can run a household efficiently.

Mary Smithson Learn to mind your own damn business, and to not go out of your way to be cruel to people for no other reason than that you are ignorant and mean. (Or should I say Deborah? I can't believe that I affected you soooooo much, that you are still lashing out at me after all this time. Makes me feel kinda powerful.)

      Mary Smithson and Deborah Derecktor
LOL "Jordan" is a "boy name" I'm sorry, Deborah, but you are about 5 decades behind the time.... I know three other females named Jordan, two in their 20's, one in her 30's.
Anyway, stop making up all these new accounts and names, pretending not to be you..... its pitiful!
Seriously, 14 year old kids do this.
I'm sorry that I had such an affect on you that you can't help but lash out at me after all this time... I had no idea that I had so much control over you.
You asked my opinion, I gave it, and since then you've been throwing hate at me. I don't understand, and I marvel at how important I've become to you.
This is the last time I respond to any of your

***** The Amish have been filmed, of course, but they are not allowed to allow it. They are not allowed to pose for a picture, or to speak on film. They are suppose to walk away.
They have been filmed, and pictures have been taken, but this show would have the Church ex communicating them. Look it up.

The Amish show us rightly that all we really need in life is a sense of belonging in a community that truly cares. God bless the Amish people.

I have known Amish all my life in Pennsylvania.. I've never met any to be anymore rude than someone in the modern world. They are just people and sometimes have bad days or bad attitudes, but that's normal. The older generations do have a very stand-off approach though because people try to take advantage of them quite often, thinking they are dumb.

Mary Jane Vilanueva Bulahan so do I. I wish when I was young I would have had the chance to learn from them. Instead I had to wait for years to learn on my own. By asking older people that could can and sew to teach me. I love canning and preserving my own food. I’m still learning. Guess you never get to old to learn.

My mom's family were dirt farmers and very poor. She remembers when they got electricity and indoor plumbing. I grew up in the city with many luxuries. The older I get, the more I appreciate the simple pleasures in life- feeling connected to the world by being quiet, noticing sights and sounds of nature, enjoying raising vegetables, home canning, etc. It slows my thoughts and helps me to stay centered/ grounded. I sleep better after a day of working the soil and have learned gratitude for the things I never considered a luxury before. This video is a wonderful reminder of how lucky I am to never want and reminds me that I have more choices and an easier life than my parents, grandparents and other older relatives.. Thanks for the reminders of what's really important in life.

Beautiful. Those kids certainly found out what is really important in life. It's not clothes or makeup or technology. It is family and a sense of belonging. It is the value of work. The feeling of satisfaction of a job well done. Thanks for posting this video. I hope God blesses this family with children. They would be such wonderful parents.

I am only 10minutes in so far but it already looks like they went into this with a great attitude. I was surprised at how they handed over everything over (even the girl with the nose piercing). I will update as I go.
I think the comments were to hard on the black girl. She was upfront and honest only in her interviews but throughout this she was very respectful and mindful. I think it did her great to meet the women who at one point left the amish.

Nobody wants to be stuck in the 1800's why would anyone want to live that way when technology has gone a long way you can live a much better easy productive life. These people live this way and isolate themselves from the modern world and are stuck in the 1800's because of their religious beliefs.
