Prince wrote that tune as a bit of a parody and snarky tribute to Chaka Khan because at that time most people saw her as nothing more than a "sexual object" used to front the band without recognizing that she was a tremendous singer. It wasn't about ego, it was about sexism. It wasn't tacky. It was a wake up call.
Actually, when Prince wrote "I Feel For You" for his second album, released in August of 1979, he wasn't thinking about Chaka Khan. I'm sure, however, he was delighted when she covered the song five years later and made it into an international hit. Moreover, from the beginning of her career, while still in her early twenties before she joined Rufus in 1973, Chaka Khan was taken VERY serious and considered a uniquely gifted singer and songwriter.
