Glad you used my video where John was playing the goldtop! Hearing it live was so loud, I felt like I was in another planet for a moment :) Great lesson Dave, accurate and informative!
That Les Paul through that amp sounds fab and I can't get over how superbly you nail Norum's tone and licks. I thought it was Norum. I want that tone. One of the most authentic Les Paul tones I've heard. That A chord sounds lush. Subscribed.
Fantastic lesson Dave. You have a superb ear and steller playing. Enjoyed this very much. John is one of my top 10 all time favorite players. Thank you for this.
Strange to think that such a guitar giant could come from my tiny hometown up in frosty Northern Norway, but I'm glad he made it big. John's blend of melodic hard rock and heavy blues, akin to Schenker and Moore, is just the ultimate rock guitar sound in my ears. Europe sure got lucky to have not just him, but later Kee Marcello. Too bad Kee didn't rejoin the band, thus giving them two lead guitarists. Now THAT would have been amazing.
Jon ( is this his original first name?) is a top class act for sure, I first hear him when he played The Final Countdown solo, but to me his finest hour came when he played on Don Dokken's album. Beautiful licks and tone akin to the Blackmore, Moore and Schenker tradition.
@@fernandes5986 I think on that album John went more shreddy than soulful tbh. But the word soulful goes along with John, he was more soulful on his solo albums and during his Europe era imo. My favorite guitarist along with Jason Becker ,Gary Moore and Richie Sambora.
Love John Norum! What a great guitarist, he’s a big Michael Schenker and Gary Moore fan which really shows in his playing. Thanks for the video, I’ll be plugging into these later😃
Great video, I love John Norum, and he has a super duper solo record that came out many years ago called Total Control. It's also fun to see him jam with Michael Schenker through a Roland Micro Cube. I have one of those and they're terrific practice amps. Keep on rock'in and roll'in.
I know I'm late but I just wanted to say that I was at the Gods Of Metal festival in 2011 and Mr.Big played just before Europe, that's why Paul Gilbert was there checking out Norum. I also remember the drummer Ian Haugland checking out Epica from the very same spot. LOL Great video, by the way! Norum was the reason I started playing the guitar back in the 80's.
Great lesson! You even picked a 65 strat for your pic - he used a 65 to record the final countdown and all his other solo stuff. I love that second lick and have often tried to work it out, thanks so much for this!!
i swear to god i almost left a comment on the last video asking about 3 John Norum licks, this is so cool lol we're synced. John became one of my favorite guitar players after i got into the latest Europe albums , war of kings & walk the earth are so god damn good albums! Thanks for this!
Excellent video. Thank you for showcasing and bringing awareness to John NORUM. Having discovered EUROPE via 'The Final Countdown' videoclip in early 1987, John NORUM became of one of my favourite guitarists and musicians. His melodic guitar solos on 'The Final Countdown' spoke to me. Love John NORUM's solo material as well and EUROPE's studio albums post 2003. John NORUM; and Kee MARCELLO are amazing musicians; and EUROPE are as talented as JOURNEY and TOTO.
His solo in "Final Countdown" is so brilliant and exciting! I'd love to learn more about his Don Dokken co-guitarist Billy White (1st guitarist and co-writer of Watchtower). Thanks for serving up this great lesson in answer to our myriad John Norum requests, David!
@@Clifford2005 The dual battle in the solo from Crash and Burn the 1st track on the Don Dokken album is one of my favorite solos of all time. Absolutely incredible.

Great video! Norum playing Eruption and jamming Lights Out with Schenker is just priceless!! At 4:30 yes that is Paul Gilbert imho, a guy next to him can be seen briefly, he's looking like a dwarf but Paul is like 6 ft 5" tall, see the difference? Another thing: what's that symbol you used at the beginning of the video, the circle with the text that this is recorded a half step down? I have seen something like that before but I never knew what it's from or it's meaning. Keep em coming!
John is definitely in my top 10 hard rock guitarists, when Lynch left Dokken I thought Don was screwed but great get with John Norum and Billy White on the Mirror Mirror album Dokkens best post Lynch album.
Face the Truth is a great album. Norum brings the riffs and solos while Glenn Hughes was on the top of his game vocally. Norum always seemed to have a strong Gary Moore influence in his playing.

John Norum is a monster. Go listen to Don Dokkens "Up from the Ashes" album where Norum is playing guitar together with Billy White. Every single solo on this album is an absolute gem.

@MuSiCmAn NiChOli I feel very much the same way, my friend. Thank you for your kind answer, and make sure you keep that passion going for as long as life allows you to. I have already watched pretty much every upload. Amazing stuff!
It's funny, but every time I listen to John Norum, I remember Gary Moore, which is my favorite guitar player. It's not a surprise Norum is also a huge Gary Moore fan.
If you listen to the solos on the Final Countdown, you can hear a _lot_ of Gary Moore's influence. For example in songs like Rock the Night, Ninja, Heart of Stone, and On the Loose.

John Norum is awesome, great lesson video with a touch of Lynch, clips of the best are great, but it's hard to slow this stuff down to follow, i'm struggling keeping up, you got any tabs for this stuff
This is correct. They formed the band a couple of years before the competition and they won the recording deal for their first album when they won Rock SM.
Caught him performing with Don Dokken in '91, I think it was, at a small venue, Baity's Backstreet, Winston Salem, NC and the Lynch Mob performed at the same club the following weekend. (A good couple of weeks as I recall.) Norum was married to the late Michelle Meldrum of Phantom Blue (Shrapnel Records & Geffen) and her solo band, Meldrum. Norum played solo on the 'Better Off Dead' track of Phantom Blue's 2nd album, 'Built To Perform.' Good song, good album; the gals also had Marty Friedman on one track and as well as do a good cover of Thin Lizzy's 'Bad Reputation.' If you've never checked out Michelle's work, if nothing else I'd recommend the 2nd Phantom Blue & the Meldrum albums. John Norum played on some of the Meldrum tracks if I'm not mistaken. To be honest I lost touch with Europe after Norum departed and never reconnected after his return to the band upon their reunion. And was surprised to see how many albums they've made since then. Guess I need to check some of their post reunion work, now.🤔
