  • A challenging pony restoration with a tragic accident. I considered not showing my ugly mistake but I think it can help others. So here it is, the process of cleaning and re-hairing a MLP G1 Night Glider and some what-not-to-dos. (Note: Although I spent days trying to whiten the tail, the yellowing just never went away so I decided to redo it as well. I'm sending the owner the original tail so she can exchange if she so desires!). Night Glider is a G1 Twice as Fancy My Little Pony released by Hasbro in 1984.

      I have to send this one back to her owner but I'll definitely look for one for myself because... LOVE!!! They're not easy to find in England, the one from the video was from the USA and took months to arrive (because of her condition, though, she had a good price). Neither of us expected the peroxide to work, I think. Pretty happy it did :)

      She was sent to me for a restoration, but I believe the owner paid something like $40 when she bought it (plus shipping to the UK). I've never seen one selling for less than 120. After having worked on her and seeing her up close, I think she's worth it :) Such a pretty pony.

    Oh, I had almost the same problem with my Honeycomb... Her head was really hard to get out.. I partly damaged her ring (not at all as in your case, it is still with head, but it is cracked). Seems like glue or something else corroded material.. I don’t know.. Hope, the owner of your pony was not angry.. Because it is very hard to detach head in this case.. And you clean excellent, I am surprised with such good result. 😍

    • @RetroGeekCrafts
      @RetroGeekCrafts  3 года назад +38

      I talked to her as soon as it happened and she was super understanding. I wanted to crawl under a rock. She didn't think the marks would come off at all so she didn't mind the decapitation. Once I saw the holes I tried leaving some of the ring in place but the angle was impossible and the glue wouldn't give up. Luckily, she's very happy with the final result :)

      Hi! Thank you so much for watching the videos :) Do the marks on your pony look "bleached"? If so, it might be acne cream damage. It's important that you keep the pony away from others if this is the case. What's the color of the rest of the pony skin? Dying is definitely an option. I confess I tried dying and used too much colour... that's why there is no video xD I used rit dye, liquid. You need to boil the pony. There are some similar videos if you search for dying monster high dolls - same principle. Feel free to send me a photo through instagram and I can take a look at the damage and tell you if it's the dreaded acne cream.

    I didn't hold on to many ponies from my childhood, but watching this video inspired me to see if I could find my Night Glider. She was buried deep in the bowels of my closet, and in fairly decent shape. Her hair and parts of her body are yellowed, and she's got one tiny rust spot on her booty from the washer. She's also got some weird discolored spots behind her ears on her neck (like weird little faded spots and acetone did nothing), so I'm going to try to give her some UV treatment.
    Quick question before I get to that last step, though:
    Would painting over all of her factory-painted markings with water-soluble acrylic work to protect them during the UV process? I just don't think I have the patience for cutting out all that masking tape haha

    • @RetroGeekCrafts
      @RetroGeekCrafts  3 года назад +1

      I hop you can find your Nightglider, it's one of my favourite ponies. Honestly, I don't think you need to cover the symbols because the paint is usually great quality (it's the foreign ponies that have weaker paint) BUT if you do, use tempera paint. It's much softer than acrylics, waaaay easier to remove. I used acrylics on a baby pony and it stripped some of the paint... so tempera. Definitely :) Good luck with your restoration!!

  • @hollygolightly8970
    @hollygolightly8970 3 года назад

    What is the UV procedure? Do you let the peroxide cream dry fist or do you put it in the box wet? How long do you leave it in the box? Do you have wash the peroxide cream off after? If so how do you do that just water or soap and water?

    • @RetroGeekCrafts
      @RetroGeekCrafts  3 года назад +1

      The procedure would be (at least how I do it!): Apply perxodide cream and place inside the box right away. Leave it in for a few hours - minimum 5 or 6. I think once the cream dries, it stops having any effect. Then wash or wipe, doesn't need to be too careful, just clean enough that the new cream can reach the plastic. Repeat this process a few times, depending on the marks. A couple of sessions might be enough for bringing back the colour. Pen marks can take literally months to fade. Once you're done, clean with water and soap. It's generally recommended that you cover eyes and syumbols if you're going to do several sessions. You can use tempera paint, acrylic paint, or just tape.

    • @RetroGeekCrafts

      This happened to me too (the Nightglider pony) and I felt so guilty!! I ended up glueing it back with superglue (gorilla glue). Were you able to remove the other side of the ring? If you, you can use gorilla glue to glue it back to the head part. I the ring is forever attached to the body, like it happened to me, you will have to glue the head.. and it won't move anymore :/

    So why did you use PVA glue on the inside if it’s easily reversible and then secure the head with superglue? What will it matter if what’s on the inside is reversible if you can’t get there ever?

    • @RetroGeekCrafts
      @RetroGeekCrafts  3 года назад

      Superglue is also reversible with acetone. I just use three or four dots so it's not coverging the entire ring - more of an aesthetic solution when the head doesn't fit perfectly.

    It baffles me when people use the rerooting tool and then use glue .. the glue won't last and be hair will fall straight out . You can never get it wet so styling the hair becomes impossible.

    • @RetroGeekCrafts
      @RetroGeekCrafts  2 года назад

      Most PVA glue is water resistant to grade 2, meaning it can sustain several cycles or wet/dry -- but this still reversible, something I consider essential for any vintage toy restoration. I haven't lost any hair secured with glue yet! Sidenote, mmost of these restorations are for display, not really for playing anymore. But if you want them play-teady, I suggest you use fabric glue or gorilla glue instead!
