We have to also remember that he was sighted until he was 10 and remembers what that was like so that informs a lot of his assumptions about the things he "sees" as well. There's actually a comic where Tony Stark(gone bad) temporarily restores his sight and the only thing he thinks to do as it fades is that the last thing he wants to see is Foggy's face.
