This piece is used extensively in the Cosmos TV series. Two segments in particular are used for scenes of exploration. 18:25-20:45 is on the Cosmos sound track recording under the title Exploration. 13:16-15:26 is not on the recording.
This piece was used in Carl Sagan's Cosmos in Encyclopedia Galactica, in the part Champollion finally arrives at night to the Temple of Karnak, to see in situ the hyeroglyphics he has helped decipher
Hmmm 0:00 - 1:36 the inspiration for like 95% of modern horror movie/thriller soundtracks. Have you ever heard something that ominous and fear-drenched?
Hovhaness conduct his piece? I hear this again but with the score first time and find that the "senza misura" passages are fairly shorter than he wrote on the score. If he strickly follow what he wrote on the score I think the total duration would be at least 5-7 minutes more.
underrated master. his music will live on thank you

didn't realize his music was so progressive.
Broad, ambiguous, reverent and sinister

And I like the 13:16-15:26 segment better.
