Alfred Wallace Russell's The Malay Archipelago is an amazing read. His determination to discover new species and the effort he put into traveling from 1854 to 1862 is almost beyond comprehension to us who are used to booking travel online and having the help of a personal computer in our pocket--never mind no antibiotics or insect repellent!
So beautiful this place where you stayed, I would just be scared walking around with poison snakes. Why I chose Puerto Rico ,and everything grows well here. I would love to explore there one day
Thanks. taxonomy of this wonderful Alpinia nutans is quite confusing because another species has been later described under the same name but this other species is now considered as Alpinia zerumbet, a much more common species in continental Asia while this real Alpinia nutans is endemic to Moluccas.
My first trip while a young student in Paris was in Peninsular Malaysia in 1972. Since that time we often come back and always new discoveries in your wonderful forests.
Most mosses and hepatics usually need a low light intensity to grow but cannot survive in totally dark environment such as being covered by the dead leaves falling from the trees of the canopy. This is why they grow on emerging rocks and the oblique bases of tree trunks, buttress and stilt roots and also cave entrances.
Yes, there are similarities especially in genera like Medinilla but mostly not the same species. This Wallacea flora is of course connected to Mindanao, Sulawesi, Raja Ampat, Papua Bird's Heas and Lesser Sunda Islands. All parts of an endangered paradise...
Excellent video with fantastic ecosystems and plants. A feast for the eyes and mind.

Merci Manfred. Just as you know all my inspiration emerges from tropical forests since my first trip to Malaysia as a young student for my PhD.

How does mosses grow on the logs and leaves on the forest floor?
Most mosses and hepatics usually need a low light intensity to grow but cannot survive in totally dark environment such as being covered by the dead leaves falling from the trees of the canopy. This is why they grow on emerging rocks and the oblique bases of tree trunks, buttress and stilt roots and also cave entrances.
