Im a black guy who once slept in a car. Whenever security or cops interacted with me, there were never any problems, tickets, or arrests. I was respectful, and so were they. Respect is necessary, and not having a victimhood mentality helps.
I was working homeless for almost a year after covid. Finding the right spot is important, and small businesses are not a good place. Wally World works, interstate rest areas work, and if you can sleep daytime, parks with shade even work.
Small businesses are more paranoid that you're there for nefarious purposes, Wally World is USED to overnight campers, and unless you're causing problems like throwing trash on the lot, won't even bother you!!
You can't be dirty though, your license has to be valid, and you can't have warrants. If YOU are asked, generally all they will do is record your info for the report (trespass warning), and tell you to move on. It's not difficult.
Thank you!! I'm so tired of the race card being played over and over again.
@@mikeh8416Yes, our local Walmart has big rigs/18 wheelers and RVs you drive parked on the far ends of their parking lot, and there has never been an issue with them allowing them to park/sleep there.
@tz1592 Unfortunately, many black people have a professional victim mentality. They refuse to look at the nonsense in the black community.
wait, wait, wait; you're telling me that if you behave with basic human respect and don't act a fool you won't have a hard time? UNBELIEVABLE!
I’m also a black woman from Florida, who was unfortunately homeless at one point and my car was my home and only possession. I had few encounters with police officers. I’ve always complied, giving them my ID when asked and always RESPECTFUL and they’ve always been respectful back. One cop in particular from my hometown, after hearing about my situation, would bring me gift cards and blankets and made sure I had resources. There are some good cops out there. They’re not all bad. Thank you officer Muriel❤ (This was a few years ago, I’ve since moved to Kentucky and life is good).😊
Edit: Thank you everyone for the kind and encouraging words, encouragement like this is what helped me get through that difficult time. Not everyone who is homeless is an addict. The pandemic had an impact on us all, some worse than others. I’m praying for everyone struggling or going through a difficult time! I’m with you and if you need anything I’m here! Don’t give up, It does get better. God bless❤️
So why did you have much encounters with police?...you had to be doing something wrong...im 50 years old and Ive never had an encounter with police in my life ... because I obey the law...
Clearly, you don't know your own Rights. Those officers demanding your ID were violating your RIGHTS. Even those with badges will use that to walk all over you.
I hope things are better for you now. ❤

Saying he observed me sleeping.
@@AmericasGoddess Yeah but you parked on private property, so now they have a reason to ID you and stuff. To avoid all that you have to park on public property.
“Easy target” my foot. I’d wager most officers would be happy to get through the day without having to deal with any of those who so regularly resist, threaten, kick, spit, and relentlessly play the victim.
When told you are trespassing, you are supposed to be given a chance to leave, before demanding ID for a criminal trespass warning. The officer violated her rights, because he demanded her ID, when she was more than willing to leave!
If she could have had a lawyer, they could have checked to see if there was actually a call reporting her sleeping in the parking lot. I feel he likely drove by and saw her, and decided "they got a call"! Because she didn't know her rights, instead of asking for his supervisor, she made things worse by leaving. Then she used the race card, which rarely gets you any sympathy
But for the comments to praise the officer, for violating her rights, by demanding her ID, not so he could "write up his report", was a lie! He, along with most US LEOs, are trained to lie, cheat, and threaten, to get the ID of everyone in a vehicle they approach, or of anyone they see on a sidewalk.
LEOs don't have a right to your ID, do they can run it for warrants, (so they can win the award for the most arrests on warrants, by unlawfully demanding IDs)!
It's so important for citizens to know their rights! They also need to know officers are allowed to lie, and will do so, to get your ID! If that doesn't work, they remove you from your vehicle, to "detain you" in handcuffs, to make you believe if you don't give them your ID, you will go to jail. You need to know the following:
-ask for a supervisor. If they refuse, include that in the official complaint
-ask why you're not being given a chance to leave, when you are more than willing to do so, as the trespass statue states; before you are required to ID? If they say they need it for their report, let them know, he can write a report without the contacts ID, and they can run her license plate to see if her registration matches her car. If she's on private property, doesn't the owner of the property have to request police ask her to leave? As mentioned earlier, you can find out if there was actually a call reporting her sleeping on her car on private property.
-ask if you refuse to ID, because you haven't been given a chance to leave, will I be arrested?
If they say yes, give them your ID, and file a complaint and call a civil rights lawyer, to file a lawsuit!
IF YOU DON'T REPECTFULLY EXERCISE YOUR RIGHTS, YOU WILL LOSE THEM!

All those going on in the comments about her rough situation, if you listen at about 9:30, she did have a job and left it because she didn't want to work early in the morning. This is not a "the factory closed and I ended up on the streets" story. You can still feel bad for her, but this position is all her own choosing, it was not thrust upon her, just like the arrest.

Having to get up at 5 am and earning 14 bucks an hour - that sounds like a good gig to me. How many police officers have to get up at 5 am and go and do their jobs - without whining?
@@elisekuby2009 You mean all those cops that got a STARTING WAGE of $25/hr, and don't even have to drive their own car to work (get their gas for free), spend most of their day in an Air Conditioned car watching youtube, AND get a pension equal to their pay after 20 years?
I wouldn't whine either!!
You ACTUALLY have a RIGHT to quit a job you don't like. It doesn't have to be about pay either. The HARD part is finding a better one that you like, and can live on. SOMETIMES that means sacrifice, like not having a comfy apartment to sleep in, and she OBVIOUSLY felt that was worth not working there.
Yeah, cops deserve the perks they get, because it IS a dangerous job. But if you don't feel the job YOU have gives you what YOU deserve, you have EVERY RIGHT to leave.

1. You don't have to surrender your ID to police because they demand it. This is America not Nazi Germany. The US Supreme Court ruled decades ago an officer must have "Articulable Reasonable Suspicion" you are committing a crime or about to commit a crime to force you to ID yourself. Sitting in your car asleep or not is not a crime.
2. An officer must have the above ARS to detain you which is a 4th amendment seizure, if you are not lawfully detained you are free to leave at any time as it is considered a consensual encounter, YOU DON'T NEED PERMISSON TO END A CONSENSUAL ENCOUNTER WITH LAW ENFORCEMENT.
And before all the idiots start droning on about trespassing, while trespass is a "crime" you must be told to leave by the property owner (or an authorized delegate) and refuse before it is trespassing or return after you have been legally trespassed from the property, none of which occurred in this encounter.
And as for all the "race card" comments this lady was railroaded through the system on an illegal stop and 4th amendment violation simply because she was black and surely had to depend on a public defender that is over worked , under paid, and just needs to clear cases. Pathetic.
She was ridiculous 😂
Have you ever seen someone more ridiculous? Guess not since this is what you consider ridiculous.
I once slept in my car in a legal public parking spot in NJ because I was too tired to drive. A cop woke me up to check on me. He did not even ask for ID. I thought, no problem.
He then came back about an hour later, banged on my door ,and said that he would let me remain there if I let him tase me. I said "no thank you" and drove away. I was so beat that I thought that I was going to crash.
Once I crossed the bridge into beautiful, safe Bucks County, PA, I immediately pulled over and was out like a light for four hours. Ironically, I had parked across the street from a police station but did not even realize it, LOL.

I drive a tow truck, and these are the hardest calls to do. Towing away somebodys home breaks my heart and soul. I don't make much money, but I have in the past paid for the tow, just so I don't have to impound the vehicle. Because for most of these people, paying their impound bill is impossible, which means they lose everything they have, which isn't much to begin with..
And that case that’s why they need to humble themselves and listen to the police
Ur a good person!! I could t do it either! Would break my heart forsure
@@Sook995 I'm not sure if I misunderstood your reply, or you're misunderstanding my comment. But they don't get towed because they're not humble enough. They usually get towed because often their car breaks down at a location where they can't stay. They can't afford to fix it, then the business or city steps in and tells them if they don't move it, it gets towed. What can they do?
Or often it's as simple as their battery is dead and they need a jumpstart. But nobody helps one another anymore, and they can't afford $75 to call us to come jumpstart it. In fact I drive around between tows and go to the areas where they park to check to see if anyone needs a few bucks worth of fuel or a jumpstart. So just so in case they're told to move on, they can. I try to help those who lost their job and couldn't pay rent, or the landlord couldn't wait for unemployment to process their claim, so they get evicted. Or just decent people who had a bad roll of the dice and can't get back out of the hole. Stuff like that breaks my soul, because if you held up your part of the great social contract we have with each other, to work and pay taxes and follow the laws, you should never end up homeless in a wealthy country like ours..
So in rare circumstances when I can afford it, or the need is critical for these people (like when they have children) I'm happy to pay for the tow myself to keep them from losing their children, and everything they own, including the only home they have, over a couple hundred dollar tow bill. I work 80hrs a week and can barely make ends meet to the point where I live in my 5th wheel in an RV park because I can't afford actual housing. But I have a warm bed and a shower, food in the cupboard and I'm safe when I sleep. Which too many good people can't say.
Apologies for the long reply, but I don't want anyone to get it twisted. There's way too many homeless people and families on the streets who don't deserve to be there. But (imo) there's a ton of homeless people in the streets who do. Thieves, methhead scum who shoot their garbage in playgrounds and leave dirty needles, crackheads who cheat their family and friends to buy their rocks.. I don't lose a wink of sleep over whatever suffering they go through as a consequence of their actions. So don't think I'm one of these bleeding hearts who believe people who smoke crack in public bathrooms, or at busy bus benches, or in front of the doors to a shopping mall are just poor victims of society who do these things because society has been a big meanie and racism and self esteem . nope, f*ck those people.
