Scottish performer and musician Billy Boyd, renowned for his portrayal of Peregrin Took in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, composed and performed this melody specifically for the closing credits of The Battle of the Five Armies. Directed by Peter Jackson, the film marks the culmination of his cinematic odyssey comprising six movies adapted from J.R.R. Tolkien's beloved classics, The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. In an interview with Billboard magazine, Boyd emphasized the broader scope of their creative endeavor, stating, "We focused on not just the final installment, but more so on this ten-year epic adventure...a song to sum up the six movies."
I dedicate this video to actor Bernard Hill (1944-2024), the one and only Theoden King.
Lyrics:
I saw the light fade from the sky
On the wind I heard a sigh
As the snowflakes cover my fallen brothers
I will say this last goodbye
Night is now falling
So ends this day
The road is now calling
And I must away
Over hill and under tree
Through lands where never light has shone
By silver streams that run down to the sea
Under cloud, beneath the stars
Over snow one winter's morn
I turn at last to paths that lead home
And though where the road then takes me
I cannot tell
We came all this way
But now comes the day
To bid you farewell
Many places I have been
Many sorrows I have seen
But I don't regret
Nor will I forget
All who took the road with me
Night is now falling
So ends this day
The road is now calling
And I must away
Over hill and under tree
Through lands where never light has shone
By silver streams that run down to the sea
To these memories I will hold
With your blessing I will go
To turn at last to paths that lead home
And though where the road then takes me
I cannot tell
We came all this way
But now comes the day
To bid you farewell
I bid you all a very fond farewell
I cannot express in words how incredible your singing is. Thank you.
You Irish always lost all the wars. The British always kicked their asses but the most important thing is that Irish culture will disappear as Muslims continue to arrive in their country. I can already imagine how in 60 years, their women will go out into the streets covered head and toe.
My dad uncle died suddenly last week and hearing this has me balling like a child all over again. It’s crazy how something as simple as music can make such a big impact
I’m so sorry for your loss… I know the pain of an unexpected loss… my uncle also passed away suddenly and accidentally
Truthfully, I haven’t been able to listen to this yet because my favorite cat came down with cancer and we had to assist her transition to Heaven just about an hour ago… I’m not ok
truly Beutiful and Fitting with the Recent Passing of Bernard Hill may he Rest in Peace
"'Farewell, Master Holbytla!' He said. 'my body is broken. I go to my fathers. And even in their mighty company I shall not be ashamed. I felled the black serpent. A grim morn, and a glad day, and a golden sunset!'
Merry could not speak, but wept anew.
The old king smiled. 'Grieve not! It is forgiven. Great heart will not be denied. Live now in blessedness; and when you sit in peace with your pipe, think of me! For never now shall I sit with you in Meduseld, as I promised, or listen to your herb-lore.'
-JRR Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, Theoden to Merry on the Pelanor fields after the slaying of the Witch King
At that sound the bent shape of the king sprang suddenly erect. Tall and proud he seemed again; and rising in his stirrups he cried in a loud voice, more clear than any there had ever heard a mortal man achieve before:
Arise, arise, Riders of Théoden! Fell deeds awake: fire and slaughter! spear shall be shaken, shield be splintered, a sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises! Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor!
With that he seized a great horn from Guthláf his banner-bearer, and he blew such a blast upon it that it burst asunder. And straightway all the horns in the host were lifted up in music, and the blowing of the horns of Rohan in that hour was like a storm upon the plain and a thunder in the mountains. Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor! Suddenly the king cried to Snowmane and the horse sprang away. Behind him his banner blew in the wind, white horse upon a field of green, but he outpaced it. After him thundered the knights of his house, but he was ever before them. Éomer rode there, the white horsetail on his helm floating in his speed, and the front of the first éored roared like a breaker foaming to the shore, but Théoden could not be overtaken. Fey he seemed, or the battle-fury of his fathers ran like new fire in his veins, and he was borne up on Snowmane like a god of old, even as Oromë the Great in the battle of the Valar when the world was young. His golden shield was uncovered, and lo! it shone like an image of the Sun, and the grass flamed into green about the white feet of his steed. For morning came, morning and a wind from the sea; and darkness was removed, and the hosts of Mordor wailed, and terror took them, and they fled, and died, and the hoofs of wrath rode over them. And then all the host of Rohan burst into song, and they sang as they slew, for the joy of battle was on them, and the sound of their singing that was fair and terrible came even to the City.
A beautiful song and love tribute to one of middle earth's bravest kings. A great actor left us but he will live on in the films of lord of the rings

Thanks , you’re songs and humanity means to many at this time of hardship.. once again a jewel from the Ireland..
This song caught me by surprise when it played during the closing of the Hobbit movie... And there wasn't a dry eye in the theater.
Now it's a fitting farewell to the Greatest Generation as their road ends. Remember them, what they accomplished, and keep their memory alive as the sun sets.
Hail the Victorious Dead
HAIL!
HAIL!
Alas for Bernard Hill. He did so much as an Actor, but I cannot see him as less then Theoden King. I'd like to share my favorite passage from the books involving Theoden.

idk, if this would really fit your style but I think you could do a good cover of 'Ground Control to Major Tom'
Found this after having to put down my 10 year old cat yesterday and despite having never heard this song before, it, combined with your fantastic voice, has been a balm to this shattered heart. Thank you, your work made me feel like my baby girl is still here, even though she crossed the rainbow bridge.
I shattered my lower back in a car crash in 2001. 3 years later in November 2004 a stray Tom had chased a tiny little Orange kitten onto the doorway of my mother's townhouse.
Fifteen years... For fifteen years Ed's fir soaked up so many tears, hurts and pain.
I to had to have him put down, and to this day I see a flash of Orange out he corner of my eye... Or feel his head in the side of my neck.
Just remember.. when your time comes you'll see her again.
Rest in peace Bernard Hill ❤

Amazing as always

Over hill and under tree, through lands where never light has shone

Under cloud, beneath the stars, over snow on winter's morn
I turn at last to paths that lead home
And oh, where the road then takes me, I cannot tell
We came all this way, but now comes the day to bid you farewell

Dear lord, this hits all the feels.
Absolutely marvelous
Seth, this is so moving!!!
I'm not crying, you're crying. 😢 That was beautiful. I've said before I want this song done at my funeral, but now I don't know if I want the original from Boyd or this beautiful rendition!
Breathtakingly melodic performance of a highly evocative melody! Ironically, yesterday's Guardian carried a report on collaboration between Peter Jackson and Andy Serkis to produce a new set of Lord of the Rings films for 2026: The Hunt for Gollum ...
I have no expectations from suggested videos. I didn't expect to find gold here. 👏
One of the best renditions of this song I've heard. You've got an amazing voice. Found this by accident and glad I did. So many amazing songs...
I have listened to this song so many times. I prefer this version to the original. Keep it up! 😊
