That’s the whole point of Future. It was building up the perfection everyone had, including him. Everyone saw him as a savior, or perfect, but he subconsciously knew he wasn’t a perfect person. So he mistakenly saw himself as a monster, because that’s what he could have become if he continued on the path he was on. Once he was out of the denial phase of himself being a wonderful person, he lost his mind, because that’s all he had ever known, all that he’d ever been told. And he learned that he did have flaws, and that it was ok to have flaws. He just needed to work on controlling his flaws

In reality, I have always seen Steven as a selfish, loudmouth and even in his movie and his future series he doesn't even know what the purpose is.
