  • Drag Race Philippines Season 1 Episode 1 Premiere Reaction! Drag Race Philippines Season 1 is out and we reacted to the premiere! All of the queens seem very confident so I am excited to see how the season goes! The queens entered the work room in gowns, towels and a variety of different looks. It already seems like there is conflict brewing before the season starts with some of these queens because a lot of them know each other. The queens started the show with a mini challenge where they had to turn into super heroes! This was such a cool challenge and the photos came out amazing!! Then the girls had to compete in a talent show. Then the runway seemed to be to show of your Philippines looks! What did you think of the 1st episode?!?! Who do you want to win?? The queens of the first season of Drag Race Philippines are: Brigiding , Corazon , Eva Le Queen , Gigi Era , Lady Morgana , Marina Summers , Minty Fresh , Precious Paula Nicole , Prince , Turing , Viñas Deluxe , and Xilhouete! #dragracephilippines #dragracephilippinesepisode1 #dragracephilippinesreaction #dragracephilippinesep1 #dragracephilippinesreview

    The mini challenge is based on the Pinoy super hero "Darna" who had to swallow a magical stone to transform. Rather than a Filipino version of Wonder Woman, the original creator actually based the powers of Darna from Superman.

    Mabu-heeey is the yassification of "Mabuhay!", which translates to "Long live!"

      @@DanDTV no worries! And another context:
      Dragna - the word drag combined with the word "Darna", Philippines own Wonder Woman. She's a girl who literally swallows a white stone then screams "DARNA!" to transform into her superheroine form. Which explains their costumes in the photoshoot. ;)

    *"queen ang ina mo"* (direct translation "your mom is a queen")
    is actually also a play on words of "queen ina mo" that is an equivalent of "king ina mo" which is modernized version of "Tangina mo" which is short for "Putang ina mo" which is equivalent to saying the curse word *" you son of a bitch"*

    Out of all the international franchise, drag race phillipines is the easiest to digest because it's about 80 percent in english. For the dyslexic foreign viewers like me who detest subtitles, I appreciate the effort they put to make the franchise international viewers-friendly.

      FYI: The main reason there's a lot of English is because English is one of the two official languages in the Philippines, alongside Filipino/Tagalog. That's why Filipinos are also English speakers. The Philippines was also a US territory from 1898 to 1946, which explains the hints of American influence in PH culture (one of the reasons why there are so many Filipino-Americans and Filipinos living in the US).

    • @drewsarmiento
      @drewsarmiento 2 года назад +14

      It’s also cause that’s how we pretty much talk here. English then we switch to Tagalog or in my case Bisaya which is a different dialect then mix in Gay Lingo then mix in some spanish too for some good measure. At this point I think in literally different languages all the time. And I studied in a Chinese Mandarin Catholic School. It’s pretty much a chaotic yet fun remix

      girl also in the ball episode, The producers only gave the queens to create a look for 1 DAY! thats why some of the ambitious look/s looked really unfinished (gigi era). well, idk why they have to use fresh flowers (its literally challenging tho) instead of making fake ones.

  • @juanfeli7702
    @juanfeli7702 2 года назад +14

    I.
    "Mabuhay" means colloquially "Welcome!"
    Mabuheyyyy
    II.
    The mini challenge is "Drag-Na" which is from a Filipino comic book heroine "Darna". It is a staple in the Philippine entertainment where promising actresses rise to superstardom when they play the role of Darna.
    Narda, the human form of Darna, becomes a superhero by swallowing a magic stone. Narda needs to swallow the stone and scream "Darna" to turn into the superhero. That explains the joke "ARE YOU READY TO SWALLOW?"
    III.
    1,000,000 pesos or $17,000-18,000 USD is life changing money. The monthly salary typically is about 40,000 pesos (top 40-50%) of Filipinos with entry level fresh grads as low as 15,000 pesos.
    Which explains why the mini challenge cash tip of 20,000 pesos and maxi challenge of 80,000 is really massive.
    IV.
    Totally Impressive Talent Extravaganza or T.I.T.E.
    Pronounced as "Tee-Teh"
    Tite is the Filipino translation of Penis. A parody to C.U.N.T of normal franchise
    V.
    Ter-No You better Don't
    Terno is a historical era clothing. For women, it's usually a "Filipiniana" dress from our National Heritage Literary Heroine named Maria Clara.
    The Maria Clara gown, terno, or Filipiniana attire played a big role in the county's culture. In many history books and museum archives, it can be seen that the dress gave many Filipino women a sense of identity.
    The Filipiniana is a dress that can be identified by its puffy butterfly sleeves, plain blouse (baro or camisa), long skirt (saya), and a pañuelo (a square of cloth used as a head covering or worn as a scarf around the neck) worn over the shoulders.
    VI.
    Lipsync: Tala
    Tala means "Bright Star" or "Sparkle"
    The song talks about the sparkle of someone's eye when they are in love. Or the Sparkle you look at someone's eye to see a genuine connection.
    The song is about facial expression and emotion.

    The cost of living is insanely low here compared to other countries. This is why we are one of the most common countries outsourcing is normally considered.
    1M pesos is about 17k USD and this is the price of a good upscale sedan.
    Rent can go between $100 for a 1 bedroom to $500 for a 3 bedroom house here. You'll be surprised. Earning about $4k a month would classify you as rich in the Philippines.

    • @axisboise
      @axisboise 2 года назад +1

      Well it's true that our cost of living is insanely low RELATIVE to other western countries (actually in fact even to our other asian neighbors) - but unfortunately we also have very low average income - and tbh I'm quite sad they were only giving 1M - they coulf have easily given the winner 2M - considering they are giving 80k/maxi challenge. It's been standard for years that 1M is usually the grand price (since the 90s) - but with inflation to 2022, 1M does not have as much purchasing power as 1M in the 2000. Not to mention the amount of tax that will be deducted from the grand prize. Oh well, it's still money

    Pao’s ending line is actually not Amen but Can I get an EME up in here. Eme loosely translates to thinggy. It doesn’t translate to anything tbh. I guess it’s more of pun of Mama Ru’s can I get an Amen up in here.
    Also Terno is traditional Filipino wear or what we call Filipiniana. The Butterfly sleeves are very typical Filipina traditional wear. If they have a shawl like Lady Morgana. We call that a Maria Clara or a Baro’t Saya.
    For the response part, my guess is that it’s a play of a part of Catholic Mass which is the responsorial psalm. As you know the Philippines is a very Catholic country so that sorta makes alot of sense. What they say is Queen and Ina Nyo or Your Mom’s a Queen and the response is Queen ang Ina Nyo Rin or Your Mom’s a Queen too…. which is a positive spin of King Ina Nyo which is also a shortened version of Tang Ina Mo which is a Filipino Curse word which loosely translates to your mother’s a whore.
    Tala that song was a smash hit before the pandemic and became a viral dance hit which was performed pretty much in every Christmas party the year it was released
    Dragna is a play on DARNA a local fictional superhero that swallows a magical rock screams Darna and becomes a superhero hence they all look somewhat similar. Stars in the bust and a winged head piece
    Hmmmm what else is there. There’s so many Filipinisms here actually.

    • @axisboise
      @axisboise 2 года назад +1

      @@Phtephknee I mean, the act of doing a 'response' can already be seen as disrespectful - also we I think we don't do the AMEN part because it won't make sense in the culture. Rupaul' phrase "Can I get an Amen" is a play on the phrase "Can I get A MAN" or when they say "Can I get amen up in here" - it's again a play on "Can I get A MAN up in here" which work for english pun but will not connect with Filipino The closest we have that will make sense is "Eme"

    • @Phtephknee
      @Phtephknee 2 года назад

      @@axisboise we know what that “a men” pun means in english coz we are also an english speaking country. Its just that when youre in a religious country, we have to be careful not to offend the church.

    looove the reaction, you guys! for the photoshoot, the queens had similar-looking superhero costumes because they're emulating "Darna", a filipino comicbook heroine. Darna has also been adapted into various tv shows and quickly became our country's version of Wonder Woman. Darna gets her powers by swallowing a stone and shouting her name, hence the queens shouting "Drag-na". Darna wears a red suit, almost like a bikini, with stars embellished on her breasts, and the iconic headdress, hence the queens dressing up in a similar costume in different variations. hope this helps!

    To answer some of your questions regarding episode 1:
    MABUHAY (Mabu-heeeyy) is how we say if we are greeting someone meaning “Long Live”
    Vinas Deluxe entrance look is a reference to every gay kid who used bath towel as a gown such a CAMP look think of it like what Willow did in her entrance.
    DRAGNA mini challenge it’s a mix of DRAG and DARNA, wherein DARNA is one of the famous female Pinay Superhero that in order to transform she need to swallow a stone a shout “DARNA”
    T. I. T. E (Totally Impressive Talent Extravaganza) Tite is our tagalog translation to penis 🤭🤭
    TERNO runway…Terno is Philippines Tradition/National Costume/Outfit
    Addition: Nectar and Obar are the 2 famous gay bars in Manila where most of the Drag Queens perform
    If you need some references I’m also here in USA…invite me in your viewing ☺️☺️ Thank you so much for this amazing Recap and Review you two are doing a great job!!

    Guys: 1 US dollar is currently equivalent to 55.99 Philippine pesos and will fluctuate (not constant depending on the Exchange Rate of the Money Market).
    Therefore 1 million Philippine pesos divided by 55.99 Philippine pesos is equal to 17, 863.33 US dollars!!!

    Prince got the choreography curse since she did the original choreo for the lipsync and lost. Same thing that happened with Shea, since she did the choreography to Judas and lost as well.

    Philippines is the home of SOOOOO many titles from singers like “Asia’s Songbird” (Regine Velasquez Alcasid who will be guest judging)“Asia’s Pop Superstar” (Sarah Geronimo, owner of the song ‘Tala’). From actresses like “Mega Star” Sharon Cuneta, “Star for all seasons” Vilma Santos, “Diamond Star” Maricel Soriano. These are just some of so many titles. I think there’s 50-100 titles actually, for the singers it starts with “Asia’s” then the title and for the actresses it always ends with “Star”
    Titles that i know if:
    Asia’s Nightingale
    Asia’s Songbird
    Asia’s Phoenix
    Asia’s Pop Superstar
    Asia’s sweet superstar
    Asia’s Soul Supreme
    Mr. Pure Energy
    Mega Star
    Diamond Star
    Star for All Seasons
    Asia’s Romantic Baladeer
    Asia’s Queen of Soul
    Asia’s Vocal Supreme

    Its a small reference but in lady Morgana's runway, when one of the judges said she ate a coconut, it was referencing a Filipino folk tale of a boy who was too lazy to climb a tree in order to get the coconut he wanted to eat, so instead he just started laying underneath the tree with his mouth open waiting for the coconut to come to him instead

    The photoshoot challenge is based on the iconic Filipino superhero "Darna," where she is a normal, often poor, citizen who gains powers whenever she swallows a stone and then screams "DARNA!!!" The word they used was "Drag-na" which is like a Drag version of Darna. Hope this helps you understand why they were all wearing the same outfit during the photoshoot 💜
