- He’s been called the Hasidic Lady Gaga, the Jewish Elvis, but soon, you’ll know him as just Lipa. Raised in a close-knit community, Lipa Schmeltzer grew up with no radio and no television. Hasidic music became his outlet. After he heard his first non-Hasidic song at age 21, Lipa’s life changed. lipa is great!! thank god he now embraced his past and came back to his community. he is wildly successful, and realized that the people that he grew up with are there for him when everyone else turned their backs on him.
Definitely not the first Hasid to play music on a big stage in Hasidic clothes...
Mastisyahu did this (granted, with Reggae) quite awhile ago (still is, but isn't Hasidic anymore)
Aaron Cohen Matisyahu was coming from Chabad tho, we are alot more open minded than the Skver chassidim that Lipa is from.
LIPA was making music/putting out albums long before Matisyahu he just didn't have as wide exposure.
Aaron Cohen Yes, but Lipa has a much stronger background in Judaism than Matisyahu did. Lipa grew up orthodox. Matisyahu became Lubavitch orthodox but probably was lightyears behind Lipa in Jewish knowledge, texts, and culture. The common thread is that they are incredibly talented and both Jewish and want to help the world.
David Elkind Matisyahu didn't grow up chassidic like Lipa. He had quick inspiration and it fizzled out.
