The components for a 5th player are sold separately, allowing play with 5 players using just the base game.

I know Rahdo isn't a fan of house rules, but I wonder if the Prosperity expansion wouldn't benefit from adding one or two. One could simply involve placing the goods face-up; another might be adding carpenters based on the player count (1 per). Thematically, it would be as though each player had their own carpenter and would be individually responsible for moving them around. This would get rid of the frustrating tug-of-war aspect of it and hew a bit closer to the base game's multiplayer solitaire feel while adding a bit of a race element. Don't know if it would work (haven't tried it myself). A major issue with Prosperity, I think, is that it seems like the designers placed undue pressure on themselves to increase player interaction in a game that didn't really need it.

Thanks for running through - I do like Orleans, and it always makes me smile when I play it as my parents-in-law live between Loches (pronounced Losh) and Le Blanc, in the Brenne region, so I sometimes imagine stealing cheese from outside their house as I walk along the road!
One thing that surprised me a little though Rahdo, is your desire for more tiles - given you prefer Agricola to Caverna because of the latter's smorgasbord / open ended approach (and Arle, more so), I'd have though more tiles for Orleans would be contrary to what you enjoy in a game?

These expansions are getting ridiculous. $65! That is $10 more than the base game. I thought concordia salsa was already pushing it at $33 for a couple small add ons but $65 is crazy.

5th Player is in the DLP upgrade kit. The Bath House is updated in the core game in all of the later print runs of the game. I think you also get the updated Bath House in the DLP upgrade kit.

@rahdo I bought the character upgrade kit from dlp. It replaced all of the characters with wooden meeples and the cogs with big wooden parts. It makes them more satisfying to take them from the bag. I mention this because when I received the pieces they came with starting pieces for a fifth player. However it didn't come with a player board, so I don't know how the fifth player would actually go about using them?!

About the wheat issue: the bakery (neue ortskarten) helps with it. You can bake bread out of the wheat for more points.

    •  9 лет назад

Bakery: Pay 2 coins and bake up to 3 wheat tiles into bread. Put these tiles on the bakery. Bread may be used as a commodity or food (for example, for the harvest event). Bread is regarded as a good and must be taxed. Each bread tile is worth a number of points corresponding to your development level.

Richard, do you really want "Andor" in this game as well? ;) Do you really think Orleans would benefit from fantasy creatures?

It's not the expansion you expected, it's the expansion Gotham deserves.
Anyway, your discussion reminds me of something I read by, I think, Seth Jaffee about expansions for Eminent Domain. He said something to the effect that if your game is well enough received to even get an expansion, in the first expansion you should put in more of your core gameplay (aka, bury you in tiles). Then in future expansions you can go nuts adding new variants, mechanics, etc.
I certainly don't mean this as a criticism of this expansion, but it might explain why it is surprising. It isn't providing the "normal" content of a first expansion. Anyway, as always, great video! I am excited to almost be caught up again.

    Hi rhado,
Did you try everything in this expansion solo as well? Is it worth buying for solo purposes mostly?

I think the TMG verison has a different bathhouse. I think. I'm curious if this moves the game up in your ranking list? Really hoping TMG picks this up for distro in the USA, and adds 5th player/wooden bits/deluxe this out.
