...yeah, these guys were the wrong ones to narrate this video. A couple of idiots, who don't actually share most of the interesting features inside the crown of the Chrysler building.
In 1969, I worked on the 63rd floor and you or one of your fellow window cleaners was on the OUTSIDE looking IN one morning when I arrived at my office. An encounter I will never forget.
I was there in 1984. I remember the very highest triangular windows had no glass in them and you could reach out and touch the cladding. No video cameras then and only still photos which don't do the experience justice.
john johnson I had heard that the topmost triangles had no glass, too. It appears from this video that glass or plexiglass has since been added to them, however
I'd like to see the doorway from the public space that started you into the ladder network. As a bike messenger in 1980 I loved getting sent to this building just for the thrill of the beauty of the deco design in the elevators.
I could be wrong i think it's metal beams that are covered in fire retardant stuff. It doesn't look like rebar w/ concrete it seems way way to thin and also 2 high. Still think the video is awesome though.
@@davidread1000 I think it is metal beams covered in asbestos and "sprayed on" concrete. Asbestos is really cancerogenic, a lot of it was spread around at 9/11.
The building is steel and brick. The "concrete" is fireproofing on the steel frame inside of the spire. I've never got past the lobby and would love to know how you got up there!
that is so cool. just 2 people alone at the apex of this massive, iconic building full of thousands of ppl. luxury office spaces and probably apartments and yet you 2 snuck up to the very top and had the best view all to yourselves. i want to do this so bad,i dont know why lol it just seems like a cool thing to experience. kinda shocking that is possible to get up there without authorized access. my old apartment building had a utility building on top that had an observation deck and it wouldve required picking numerous locks to gain access, which we never did, just finally talked the maintenance guy into taking us up one day for a look.
Congrats on your ability to get access . Won't ask how you you guys did it , but THANK YOU . When I was 9 ('59) I travelled to Baltimore with my parents and older bro from So. California to Baltimore for his wedding . After he and wife left we stayed with her parents . They took us to NYC and I got to go to the obs deck on the Empire State and the Statue of Liberty . At 9 I was stoked ! The next day they took us to D.C. and we saw all the monuments and congress in session on a tour . Then got to fly home on a Boing 707 ! Take care 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
That place appears in the movie " Q, the winged snake", by Larry Cohen, but in a floor under the one where you shoot. When i watched the scene, i blowed my mind. I couldn't brlieve they got yo shoot there. I suppose because those days, the building was empty! Thanks for sharing. My favorite skyscraper ever.
I'm scared of extreme heights, actually almost all heights, but it's intriguing what the inside of the spire of the Chrysler Building looks like. I've always wondered what it looks like inside spires of tall buildings. Fascinating!
Excellent!! That is what I enjoy seeing! But one of my early jobs was installing and servicing the antennas on top of tall buildings, but not in New York. And many years ago!
The one and only favorite skyscraper that ever existed for it's one of a kind Artistic expression, some time this year I'd be planning to meticulously Oil-paint a few close shots of the top art-deco design!
nope. That last ladder goes inside the needle & it has no windows. That needle, somehow, was constructed inside the fire well in 1930, hidden until the Bank of Manhattan had finally topped out in downtown Manhattan. When the Chrysler building announced it would be taller, the Bank of Manhattan announced it would go higher & back & forth it went. When the Bank of M topped out for good, the Chrysler pushed that tall needle through the top & bolted it into place for 1,046 feet & tallest in 1930.
Amazing video. Glad you decided to post it man. Heard about the subway in Rochester you mentioned on the show awhile back and plan on checking it out on the spring.
Awesome brotha man. I Wanted to get in the Chrysler building ever since I saw Q the Winged Serpent movie. The Opster, Child of the 80s, living the dream.
I am amazed!!! I got the willies so bad watching this. I keep thinking while climbing with you and your camera what it must have been like for the guys that built it. Really cool you got to do this, Thanks!!!!
Thanks so much for posting this Op. I was trying to imagine it, and you did a damn good job describing it. I agree with Moses, it would be so cool to see it and everyone ought too.
Great video Opie. That took balls to climb those skinny ass ladders. Was getting down worse than going up? Thanks for giving us a chance to see this. Now I need MORE!!!
Amazing ! Historic moment! Can you do this again with a better câmera? Thank you for this vídeo . I was wondering how it is inside the top of the CB for 50 years! You ‘te living my dream too!
How did you get up there? Security at the Chrysler Building barely lets visitors inside the lobby! Did you see the space on the 67th floor where the Cloud Club formerly was? It's a shame that was never preserved as it would have made for a phenomenal dining experience. Still, you're a very lucky individual to see the view you did and stand just below the spot where skyscraper history was made.
Awesome vid thank you so much for sharing your experience with us. I really got dizzy watching this, I will definitely be passing this along for my friends to see.
Thankyou for filming and posting this. I am fascinated by places like that where the public can't go and the chrysler building is awesome. I have read that there is a toilet somewhere near the top, perhaps once used by the construction workers. Did you see such a convenience?
Not sure if it was asked, but the noise..was that the continuous wind we're hearing..or just ambient noise? That was awesome BTW...you're lucky to have seen it!
holy shit! me and my cousin were up there when were 15.... i tell people the story all the time. now i can show them your video! I went just as high as he did!!! wow i remember everything! AWESOME VIDEO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Like many others I want to explore this place, but NYC isn't fun towards anything off the beaten path. The elevators are now behind security gates (like in many NYC office buildings).
The same in my country. Everything fun is "sorry, people are not permitted to go there" Some caught on to it and make good money with tours and observation platforms, the rest are too concerned with "public safety"= lawsuits
Nice insight. but for a not understanding person can you explain, how are you positive? and what would be the practice of using it in the Chrysler building? thanks
Wow, not at all what I expected the inside of the spire to be like. I figured maybe a few of the "floors" in the spire to contain some sort of wicked expensive high end offices
Thanks for breaking the rules to show us the inside. The lobby doesn't look real. It looks like a 1930 movie set for an Art Deco building. Beyond iconic beyond stunning. No businesses or stores, just architectural beauty, guards, and elevator lobby. A must see.
yeah how did they get up there & how did they, on the other video, get out onto those eagle heads. Very dangerous. One slip & it's a long way down. The first "triangle" windows have some offices behind them. A dentist & an engineer I think. But above that it is off limits to visitors. The stairs end at what is called the 77th and last floor which is actually a mechanical space. To go higher, you must climb those ladders until there is a trap door that goes into the needle. They were trespassing.
@PhotoGeorge Yes I agree. The Chrysler Building said they lied about having a dental appointment at the dentist who has one of the highest level suites.
The most amazing Art Deco building in the World.
Intriguingly so ...
It was the Singer building until they destroyed it to put a box.. 😑
@@joeyharper4976 The Singer Building wasn't Art Deco, it was Beaux-Arts style!
0:57 It's not "reinforced concrete", it's steel beams with fire retardant sprayed on it. (probably containg asbestos)
Yes you’re absolutely correct because that was code then as it is now minus the asbestos it’s called Monokote fireproofing 🔥
...yeah, these guys were the wrong ones to narrate this video. A couple of idiots, who don't actually share most of the interesting features inside the crown of the Chrysler building.
Asbestos is only dangerous when it’s in the air during application or removal.
