4:08 that's not a generator, but actually mercury rectifier. Its for turning AC voltage from your generator to DC to charge batteries or whatnot. They were used even after diodes were invented because they were able to handle much more current than diodes. @Milan Velky Not even, a iphone charger is *far* more advanced, and has way more circuits than just converting ac to dc. Hell, what the MAR does then, a couple diodes could do now, its just converting ac directly to dc. Problem with rectifiers is while their simple, they add a *lot* of waves and such into the dc, so you need more stuff to smooth it out. Photonicinduction has a video on these MARs in action, theyre super cool

The power still being on can be for a few reasons:
The place may have backup generators and a huge propane reservoir that has yet to be tapped out. It's only been 6 months at the most from that electric bill you mentioned and there is very little electrical activity here.
One possibility is that it may be attached to a specific portion of the grid that it can't be shut off remotely unless somebody comes in to do so manually.
The electric company could be letting this place sit on ice until someone scoops it up. They have tons of customers. If suddenly a super user is no longer giving a discernable blip on power usage, their system may be set up that it ignores billing below a certain threshold of usage.

I used to work in an ex-military building, a place that used to be an air control transmitter station and it was connected to a separate military-operated power grid. Whenever the power company would post letters to inform them of maintenance or other disconnection, it would never go off when the neighbours places always would. On the plus side, they were never billed for their usage either, which worked out quite well for an IT company with hundreds of computers!

I live VERY close to a century old airbase in the midwest and everyone thinks a lot of crazy things flown in during the night and there ARE interesting flights at night but I've always been curious about the rail line that runs directly into the base. Most of the people that live here are affiliated one way or another. Both of my grandfather's were stationed here. One a master sergeant the other a Lieutenant Colonel who was also a young B-29 bomber pilot during the Tokyo fire raids. My mom was civilian personal working for the airforce for 29 years. Man, I love everything about underground bunkers, missile silos, and deep underground military bases, I mean I don't love what goes on in these places because it's obviously insidious but I do love the planning and engineering that went into these places. Hopefully one day you could find and film one that's connected to a mag-lev train system, (hint hint!)

The glass thing at 4:07 is a mercury arc rectifier, it's the old school way of turning AC (mains) electricity into DC (battery-like) electricity. You can find some pretty neat videos of them running on youtube, normally they glow when they are on. I do wonder if any of those can be fixed because while they are fragile they don't usually break easily unless they corrode where the electrical connections are made. You do have to be careful with leaks around those things though, there's of order a litre of mercury that sits at the bottom of it when it's off.

In UK you don’t legally have to pay an electricity bill, as its illegal to switch off your electricity on humanitarian grounds. The way the service provider gets around this, is by depriving you of their metering service, which in turn, switches off your supply. If you instruct your service provider to remove their meter from your property, and install your own privately, you will not pay another electricity bill, but have service as normal. Not a lot of people know that, for good reason!

4:08 No, not a generator. It is a very very special tube that makes DC out of AC. A massive vacuum rectifier tube, filled with a lot of mercury. Beautiful!!

I have no idea what or who I just stumbled on, but that was way cooler than the subway tunnels I used to "investigate" growing up back in Brooklyn!

4:14 that's a Mercury arc valve! If power was running through it would glow blue! That's awesome!

those old mercury arc rectifiers are amazing, they should be salvaged and put in a museum

Always enjoy the exploration vids shiey! Can't wait for the 2nd vid to come out. Always been interested in the history behind these bunker systems and have gotten to explore some of the patriot missile silos here in the u.s but nothing like this

Imagine being underground exploring one of these bunkers, and something catastrophic happens above ground…you come out and the world is gone..how messed up would that be

Great video. What’s sad. My dad being in the military 45 years took me to places that were just shut down. Bunkers. Buildings. Etc. The buildings could house people. The bunkers in tornado areas could save lives. But government politics say. Oh no can’t do that. This is government property. It’s a disgrace what they leave behind

Wish you where still able to stream some of these like back then I really loved them. thay always where so good it was almost like I was there with ya guys exploring and having theose fun/funny moments with ya those where crazy good. My most Memorable stream was when you where in some building with the speaker that played the donation voice and you guys where sneaking around because there were Obviously other people in the room Upstairs then the speaker says some random stuff luckily ya didn't get caught by it. But dont get me wrong shiey the video you put out now are still great to!
