The "generator" you mentioned is actually a Mercury Arc Rectifier. It takes Alternating Current from the grid and converts it to Direct Currant. I'm assuming the reason for needed DC power would be for radio comincations equipment
The power still being on can be for a few reasons: The place may have backup generators and a huge propane reservoir that has yet to be tapped out. It's only been 6 months at the most from that electric bill you mentioned and there is very little electrical activity here. One possibility is that it may be attached to a specific portion of the grid that it can't be shut off remotely unless somebody comes in to do so manually. The electric company could be letting this place sit on ice until someone scoops it up. They have tons of customers. If suddenly a super user is no longer giving a discernable blip on power usage, their system may be set up that it ignores billing below a certain threshold of usage.
There's electricity under several of the 7 Sisters in Moscow. We didnt stay to ask the security guard at the effing second level under MSU but in another one it seems there was a restaurant after a flight of stairs. We were litterally walking on gas masks, filters, old papers in the light of an incandescent bulb. It was weird.
I used to work in an ex-military building, a place that used to be an air control transmitter station and it was connected to a separate military-operated power grid. Whenever the power company would post letters to inform them of maintenance or other disconnection, it would never go off when the neighbours places always would. On the plus side, they were never billed for their usage either, which worked out quite well for an IT company with hundreds of computers!
Unlike Jeff bezos that insist I pay him $0.5c , like it was 5 years ago, come on dude, you already spent much more than that on mail servers trying to make me pay. I'm not going to pay.
Pretty much because its a 'Public' bunker that is attached, in part, to the tube system in London. Power is still on for tube maintenance crews and communication linesmen access.
@@anarurangiheuea3846 Is this bunker part of the London underground ? I remember seeing some bunkers featured on the tv show "Secrets of the London Underground" although I don't think this exact one was featured.
Well yeah, it's still owned by someone. Abandoned buildings in the UK (I'm assuming he went to meet Matt there) are never really abandoned, someone is on the deed and owes the electric company thousands
Well yeah. If the power is still running, whoever owns the place is getting a bill. Abandoned doesn't mean someone doesn't still own it. Not sure why the electric company doesn't just shut off the power though, it makes me wonder if it's still used somehow or those bills are getting paid. Here in the US if someone doesn't pay the electric for a while, they just turn it off.

You see things like this and it makes you wonder (and really know) what else is out there. I live VERY close to a century old airbase in the midwest and everyone thinks a lot of crazy things flown in during the night and there ARE interesting flights at night but I've always been curious about the rail line that runs directly into the base. Most of the people that live here are affiliated one way or another. Both of my grandfather's were stationed here. One a master sergeant the other a Lieutenant Colonel who was also a young B-29 bomber pilot during the Tokyo fire raids. My mom was civilian personal working for the airforce for 29 years. I've heard all kinds of stories. The base here began in 1917 and is named after an enlisted person. If anyone knows where this is and has any interesting stories I'd love to hear it.
@@jed-henrywitkowski6470 the rail line are definitely in use. The sat image shows them run straight through the base with no off loading docks or areas just straight through the base. I'm close enough I can hear the tracks from my place and I hear the train horn often at night. They have trains during the day but it definitely seem more at night. It's Scott afb.
I'm not saying anything people can't see or insinuating anything but more that I'm fascinated by the history of the base. I've been here my whole life and hear things occasionally. Thanks for the interest I appreciate it. This I why I love youtube.
Another fun fact Scott AFB was the base featured in the film RAMPAGE with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson lol. If you've been on the base it really looks like they filmed there from the look of the buildings.
Man, I love everything about underground bunkers, missile silos, and deep underground military bases, I mean I don't love what goes on in these places because it's obviously insidious but I do love the planning and engineering that went into these places. Hopefully one day you could find and film one that's connected to a mag-lev train system, (hint hint!)
4:11 a mercury-vapor rectifier valve....it converts ac to dc, in this case probably to charge large battery banks for backup power, but are used in old street cars and subway systems, circa 1930-1940 probably. pretty cool
Watching old electricity videos and thought back to this video and this exact part wondering what the hell I was looking at, this is exactly what I was looking for - thank you.
I hated that ending. I wanted to see snowflakes melting with no "closure"... it reminds me of ancient warriors dying a pathetic death and not getting their honour. Re-edit the video please and leave him hanging. Cowards!! Start hurting each others' feelings on purpose and enjoy it.
The device shown at 4:08 is not a generator, it's way cooler! It's an mercury arc rectifier, those were used to convert AC to DC before we had semiconductors. They glow blue if they are working, looks great. You can see one working in this video for example: watch?v=QY6V2syGnZA
Arc rectifiers were still in use long after the advent of semiconductors. The kind of current these were built for were well beyond anything the semiconductors of the time were capable of. One mercury arc rectifier in Blackpool was still powering the trams well into the 1990s.
YES! I love these kind of videos from you. The last bunker you went into when you had to climb in the claustrophobic vent was amazing. it's crazy that these things are under ground all over the world. so sick!

What they kept calling generators is actually a transformer and arc rectifier both of which are ancient by today's standards. I'd love to bring my meters and tools down there and see what I could figure out about these old systems maybe even liven something up to see what still works, really cool stuff.
9:22 I once explored an abandoned factory in France. One room was full of still working high voltage computers/machines, wasting power for at least ten years. The room felt fucking dangerous, so went out quickly, but I’m to this day curious how much money these ruïns have wasted.

The glass thing at 4:07 is a mercury arc rectifier, it's the old school way of turning AC (mains) electricity into DC (battery-like) electricity. You can find some pretty neat videos of them running on youtube, normally they glow when they are on. I do wonder if any of those can be fixed because while they are fragile they don't usually break easily unless they corrode where the electrical connections are made. You do have to be careful with leaks around those things though, there's of order a litre of mercury that sits at the bottom of it when it's off.
4:10 mercury arc rectifier. On the bottom of the big glass thing there should be a large pool of mercury. It converts AC to DC. DC was used for elevator motors, underground trains and such.
At times the filming. movement (just seeing hands and the camera going forward/looking around), and environment made me feel I was watching a video game, so neat!
Saw the thumbnail and thought Times really are getting tough when the Winter Soldier starts giving tours of his old Hydra hidey-holes and bases on RUclips! 😁❤
In UK you don’t legally have to pay an electricity bill, as its illegal to switch off your electricity on humanitarian grounds. The way the service provider gets around this, is by depriving you of their metering service, which in turn, switches off your supply. If you instruct your service provider to remove their meter from your property, and install your own privately, you will not pay another electricity bill, but have service as normal. Not a lot of people know that, for good reason!
You left Matt hanging at the end HAHA. I was like whaat until you were like wait a second lel. Cool bunker for real, and yeah they won't cut your electricity if you stop paying for the bills it's wild, they'll keep it connected to rack the debt up even higher so they can try and take even more from the customer, it's actually wrong. Thank you for the upload!
They actually cut your off at some point but I guess this being a bunker it probably has special status. If it's owned by the community/city/state power will probably run forever.
tell em when you're moving out and they will either bill the landlord, the new tennant, eat the cost or disconnect the supply as is their want. if you don't tell em, they may cut the supply or carry on supplying and charging you as per your agreement. might be a bit scummy if they charged you if you were in a coma or something but otherwise it's on you to be a man and honour your debts.
@@billynomates920 Some power companies are pretty predatory lmao but you do raise a great point. When life happens and you have to stop unexpectedly they should just cut it though for sure. If it's a government owned building the power is likely to stay connected for much longer as well yeah
@@Jay-hv5hf yeah, i just re-read my comment. sounds like i was having a go. i wasn't. it was what my dad said to me when the electric company charged me £200+ after i'd already moved out. i was complaining and thought i'd get some sympathy off him. looking back, he probably thought i was after a loan but yeah, they just added on to my bill at the new place so when i move now, those bastards are the first people i call!
This is actually a very interesting bunker not to explain the history of. By the looks of the technology in there, this seems to be a bunker from the 1940s. I have not heard or seen much of 1940s western bunkers and I'd like to know more about this one.
Just look up civil defense in your area. A lot was built in Europe during the 1930's and 40's. Ask town hall, ask local associations interested in preserving your town's history and you will probably be amazed by the number of shelters and bunkers built. And you'll meet cool people ;)
@@herrhaber9076 makes me think they got permission from someone to go in. Maybe they very recently purchased it, but didn’t get a chance to go in and clean up, so the old bills are still there. The “blah, blah, blah” you reference is actually cool history with regard to these bunkers. Can you imagine or guess the resources , time, and energy (blood, sweat, tears) it took to construct those bunkers? There’s a reason they’re there. You should learn what those reasons are and mention them in your videos. I’d like to know more…the story goes beyond just WWII survival. Like: For whom were they built? Civilians? Or just the troops? BTW: Your discussion about the ventilation and power generation is very good!
When I was younger I go and explore stuff like this. Never had any of this stuff more like old buildings. The guy under me talked about old welders and trust. My father was an old welder and built Subs for Electric boat. So those old welders know their stuff and learn many things on what not to do. My father always signed his work with his badge number. This way no one can say it was his work that screwed up. I got a chance to visit the place when I was younger and boy was it a huge friggen base. Talk about being amazed.
The sequence where your mate stays at the ventilation and then you crawl through to the other side to see him reminds me of a typical video game single-player section where the friendly AI remains put while you have to go out on your own haha
The only thing missing is getting stuck, them saying they'll help, you naturally having to get out on your own and them optionally dying while you were at it
I hope you guys bring equipment that can detect dangerous gases when you explore stuff like this. Never know when you could find a pocket of gas and then it's lights out. Plus old buildings could be contaminated with dangerous construction materials as well. Protect your lungs.

Not much determination needed... this is Belsize Park air raid shelter in London. The door has been unlocked for many months now. It's right here 51°32'59.6"N 0°09'48.9"W, you can literally walk in.

The "generator" you mentioned is actually a Mercury Arc Rectifier. It takes Alternating Current from the grid and converts it to Direct Currant. I'm assuming the reason for needed DC power would be for radio comincations equipment
Already stated in several other comments.
Btw, how does a "Direct Currant" taste?
Much different from a black currant?
@@DatsWhatHeSaid oh boo hoo I made a damn typo. Get off your high horse.
Check out PhotonicInduction's video about them!
The power still being on can be for a few reasons:
The place may have backup generators and a huge propane reservoir that has yet to be tapped out.
9:15 so your telling me a random mailman comes to this place once a month and delivers energy bills to a random room in this abandoned bunker.
Probably been thrown about by intruders
Well yeah, it's still owned by someone. Abandoned buildings in the UK (I'm assuming he went to meet Matt there) are never really abandoned, someone is on the deed and owes the electric company thousands
Well yeah. If the power is still running, whoever owns the place is getting a bill. Abandoned doesn't mean someone doesn't still own it. Not sure why the electric company doesn't just shut off the power though, it makes me wonder if it's still used somehow or those bills are getting paid. Here in the US if someone doesn't pay the electric for a while, they just turn it off.
I think he talking about how ne New Bills get down there..
@@verminscum Same in Portugal (1 month to pay), after that they turn it off. You need to pay the debt value+taxes in order to turn it on again

Are the rail lines rusted over? Or do they show use recent use (light to no rust)?
What is the name of the base?

4:11 a mercury-vapor rectifier valve....it converts ac to dc, in this case probably to charge large battery banks for backup power, but are used in old street cars and subway systems, circa 1930-1940 probably. pretty cool
the whole electrification is probably from the 1940s but it seems lights have been upgraded
Watching old electricity videos and thought back to this video and this exact part wondering what the hell I was looking at, this is exactly what I was looking for - thank you.

Lol
The device shown at 4:08 is not a generator, it's way cooler! It's an mercury arc rectifier, those were used to convert AC to DC before we had semiconductors. They glow blue if they are working, looks great. You can see one working in this video for example: watch?v=QY6V2syGnZA
I also wanted to commend the same, so proud that there is someone who could recognize it :D
watch?v=YhaQqgXrMMU another video, More in depth . History and explanatory
I was also about to comment the same. Great stuff!
I thought the second "generator" at 5:10 looked more like a battery...
Arc rectifiers were still in use long after the advent of semiconductors. The kind of current these were built for were well beyond anything the semiconductors of the time were capable of. One mercury arc rectifier in Blackpool was still powering the trams well into the 1990s.
That elevator with the control on top was cool, thanks.

If WW3 breaks out shiey will be the only one that knows all locations of all the bunkers.
I'm satisfied you're traveling with someone like inside bunkers were dangers are all over. Stay safe my friend!
