  • Culture Shock Series is a series of genuine, often amusing, sometimes sensitive, short videos exploring the culture and subcultures of the country we're currently visiting, from the mouth of the people who experience it daily. The way these videos were put together is by asking people to define or explain the topic at hand, unprompted.
    In this case it's the Dominican Republic and we're talking about food.
    We hope for these videos to generate a conversation, as many of the culture shock topics are, by definition, touchy subjects with complicated backgrounds.
    The views of the videos are not our own, but those of the people we interviewed. We tried to always sample a wide variety of views and opinions and kept everyone's answers.
    Please join into the conversation and check out the original blog post for a more in-depth view on the topic. wetravelandblog...

    It's a pitty that nobody talked about the other dishes. Locrio, Asopao, Sancocho, molondrones guisados, berenjenas guisadas, o asadas, moro de todo tipo de grano. Ensalada de vegetales, fria o caliente. Dominican food is awesome. Thank God dominicans like to cook. We are not very fond of fast food, junk food. We do have street food, it is delicious.

      Street food to Dominicans is not the equivalent of McDonalds or Burger King. But then again, street food in a city like London is just fabulous you cannot really call it fast food it is not mass-produced. That is the same with Dominican food it is not mass-produced and it is the same you would have at home.

      lolol, yea but you are forgetting she isn't comparing it to anything, she is simply making a statement that it is unhealthy, and for the most part, the street food and what the average Dominican eats, is pretty greasy.

    Why are people shocked that they said Dominican food is unhealthy? Every culture has unhealthy food but we also have healthy food. The diet regularly is very repetitive (rice, beans and meat) because it's a lot cheaper to make the same food and it's a third world country, so duh. Also when the girl says "whatever animal they killed that day" would be more commonly seen in the rural side of the country, it's not being a "savage", (as one said in the comments)it's a more natural way of life. But Dominican food is great and has a lot of other cultures incorporated into it, if you really go out there and try new things you'll find so a huge variety, you'll loose track of what you've tried.

      yeah when my mom she makes pork she stews it so great that it takes all grease out and makes it very healthy, plus the goose and goat meat are the healthiest meats to eat out there

    • @pamveeee
      @pamveeee 9 лет назад +3

      Jose Mercedes exactly. My mom barely uses salt because she uses other fresh ingredients and seasoning. She also doesn't really fry anything unless it is a must like tostones and pastelitos (which we only eat in the holidays) so idk why they ask gringos for their opinion when gringos eat mcdonalds on a daily and think mac 'n' cheese is flavorful.

    • @DrSanto91
      @DrSanto91 9 лет назад

      kawaiikimchipam Yeah we eat tostones every now and salami so we do not fry anything at home at all, and my mom uses like one teaspoon og salt which is enough and we good sea salt as well, and this one white chick i talked too thought it was gross we eat goose and goat up there, which is common and much better than the other red meats i see in the supermarkets.

    • @Grainsoflife

    The DR is my second home and I am not Dominican. They have a great variety of food besides Dominican ie., Italian, French, Chinese, Mexican, Haitian, Western, From local restaurants to Apple Bee and Hard Rock Cafe. Whatever your preference it is there for you to enjoy. As far as unhealthy, there are gyms everywhere with many top level athletes in prime condition--food choice, is your choice, you can eat very healthy in the DR.

    Dominican food is life it's abuela's teaching you how to make a betrayal it's your mom teaching you how to make rice it's crying when you moved on your own and you finally managed to get the con con to form at the bottom of the pot of rice and you feel like a Dominican woman it's the memories it's being around the people you care about during The Good The bad sharing the plate of food a shot of rum a cold beer a little bit of juice coffee this is what Dominican food is family culture memories and many more to come

    First of all, we invented "mangu", but it gets that name after the american's occupation. It's normal, the daily dish is "Arroz, habichuelas y carne". A good video but it was more orientated to the North part of the Country, called "Cibao". Here in the City, Santo Domingo and in the East part of the country you will find a lot of dishes like "pasteles en hoja", "catibias", "monfongo!", different kind of "pastelones"... And in the Southwest part of the country you can find a lot of dishes made of corn, like "chenchen" , "chaca", "chulitos", "dominican arepa- (nothing like Venezuelan/Colombian's arepas)"... And what about "habichuelas con dulce" and "buñuelo de yuca/ñame", traditional desserts served in the holy week all over the country?... And in Christmas, that's the part of the year where we get transformed into a really global nation talking about food, you have a lot of dishes that is kind of impossible to describe without forgetting some of them... "quipes","pastelitos" and "empanadas" those 3, don't forget of those 3!

    The video asked what is the typical food so that's why the majority said rice and beans and just like every country they have a typical food. In Mexico they eat Tacos, as the typical food, in USA in pizza or mash with a meat and corn, Puerto Rico is Lechon, Italy is spaghetti sauce with everything. In D.R we have a great Variety of plates like Sancocho of one meat or of mixed meats, Asopado de gallina or pollo also Sopa de pollo or gallina which is different, Chambre de habichuelas , fish, paella, all the different Moros like black beans and rice cooked together or red beans or Arroz con gandules, Arroz con coco, Arros with mixed vegetables , Pastellon, Ninos en Huelto, Can't never forget about the Mangu, Spaghettis, Pernil, Empanadas or pastelitos, Kipes, Chicharron, yuca, Longanisa, Bacalao, ect, ect, and let me not even get started on our sweets, dulce de leche, de coco, de batata, de ceresas, naranja, habichuelas con dulce, flan, Quesillo, Biscocho , majarete, Pudin de pan, etc,

    • @mybeautifulmonster03
      @mybeautifulmonster03 8 лет назад

      Let's not forget all of our salads, potato salad, avocado salad and green salads. In Italy I meant Spaghettis not spaghetti sauce.

      In Mexico we more than Tacos. It is funny how a Dominican says his food is the best in the world. ROFL Like he is not biased. I think others who are not Dominican need to tell you this not your own people. The most popular foods in the world are Chinese, Mexican, Italian, Japanese, and Thai food. Lechon is found in Spain and many other places like Cuba but it has its origins in Spain.

    The equivalent word/name/phrase for the "Pastelon de arroz" dish, with melted cheese on top is probably a rice casserole in English. In Cuba they call it arroz imperial. About Dominican food being redundant, I totally disagree. Dominican cuisine is quite varied and depends of the region of the country as well as well as your budget. Money constraints is a greater determinant of what you eat rather then the cultura; cuisine. Because the DR is still a relatively poor country, rice, beans and chicken remains the preferred staple dish for the Dominican masses, because it taste good, abundant, its a nutritious and provides a well balanced meal but most importantly its very cheap.

    Habichuela is Afro Caribbean kreyole language they have in these islands. Puerto Rico, Cuba and Dominican Republic share this Caribbean dialect and understand each other but in mainland Latin America most people don't understand them. Why because they have their own Caribbean creyole language in the Caribbean and because they are not really part of Latin America.
    Here is an example in Ecuador with Cubans.

      +Lauren smith omg, because American fried food and cuisine is so diverse and unique

    • @zaidaaguado1349
      @zaidaaguado1349 8 лет назад

      +Lauren smith-Most if not all Caribbean countries have similar diets. In particular the islands of PR, Cuba and DR are the three which share the greatest similarities in terms of cuisine. This is probably due to its regional location, history, climate and ancestral cultures. The result is an amalgamation of Taino Indian, African and Spanish European influences reflected in the meals. However to say that Dominican food is redundant to only include rice, beans and stewed meat is not accurate. Those three items together on a plate are colloquially known as the Dominican flag, a basic food staple eaten by most Dominicans. It is tasty, nutritious and economical. However, as families become more financially able, the choices increases and varieties expand. But regardless of that, even the most humble of Dominican eats plenty of produce, love salads with their meals as well as fruits and vegetables when in season. In the video there was a Dominican American female who described a dish prepared by her grandmother known as "ninos envueltos." This is just another name for stuff cabbage, one of the dishes we adopted from our middle eastern and Jewish immigrants. In summary these are the facts, Dominican food is not just rice, beans and stewed meat but instead wide and varied. If you can afford it you can eat dishes from every region in the DR with its own unique or special flavors for everyone to enjoy. There are many different dishes a family can prepare, but you have to be able to afford it. We must remember the DR was for a long time a very poor country, but all that is changing. In fact unlike the US, we rarely see over weight people, so that myth that Dominican food clogs the arteries is hogwash. Our food is usually fresh, natural and straight from the farm to your dinner table. Unfortunately, people are beginning to acquire a taste of US American fast foods and eventually we will begin to see an increase in diet related illnesses previously unknown in the DR but very common for developed countries like the United States.

    I dislike Dominican food and I'm Dominican. Not a self hater, I just dislike all the meat. I'm not vegetarian. I eat fish and I consider fish meat, but I will not touch pig, cow or fowl. To each his own. Dominicans need to learn to eat more vegetables however.
