I'm a SoCal guy, and some of the non-surfers I talk to don't know about Wedge. I refer to this video every time I talk about it.

Jack Schreuder well at the wedge it's rare to have days like this. This I believe was when there was a huge swell due to a hurricane. the wedge can be big, but not usually this big. also, its very shallow there, where some of those guys are diving, it's like less than six feet, and people were airlifted left and right. not to mention the jetty. Good luck though!

I live like down the street from the wedge it gets pretty gnarly and so much fun
+Kaneki Ken yeah it is where the waves break it's like 2 feet deep so you really need to know what you are doing when you are at this spot.

Try Shipsterns Bluff by Surf,Game,Action and There,s another Shipsterns Bluff Biggest&Baddest That Runs for 3 songs it's about 20 min long now they are awsome and feature like the 2 most dangerous waves on earth and if you want to top that off witth the 3rd and 4th most dangerous heavy mutated slabs on the planet just change from TASMANIAN Australia to Western Australia's, biggest & baddest, "THE RIGHT" & '"CYCLOPS" by Surf, Game, Action again i think,!
But just watch everything you can find on those 3 breàks, and the other spot not yet identified I left till last as it's the worlds most dangerous wave and also least surfed, even the international community of Big Wave Surfers wont go there and only Australian mad bastards have been there when it"s churning out hidious slabs with the square barrels with more steps than a fire escape you could fly a 747 through that has no trough half the time just dry granite in the middle of the ocean hours off the coast of TASMANIAN heading towards Antarctica and the swell comes from water 100"s of feet deep to 4 ft deep slabs of granite with 6 meter White Pointers feeding on all the seals that feed from all the fish living in this submerged rock outcrop/ reef.
These Waves are so Immense thick and powerful that just wiping out and hitting nothing has almost killed people with 1 guy blowing out his knee breaking/crushing 1 leg & bleeding from ears and nose and his lungs, shitting himself and ĺoosing consciousness, he thought he was dead and as we (humans) crap ourselves when we die maybe he did briefly??? IT'S CALLED ""PEDRA BRANCA"" TASMANIAN

Iam 62 grew up body surfing Sandy beach and Makapoo never had a chance to try the Wedge ,thats may be why I made it to 62.
7 years later I watch it again and again
this is the best wedge vid,,, I used to body surf here all day and after school... me and my buddy Marco drug a lot of drowning sole outta here.. this place can catch the best of swimmers off guard

Less is more and you illustrate that well. Thank you for the time and effort at this great footage, no different than the many others but for the fact that you capture with slow-mo what the eye sees and yet we often miss; huge drops, perilous cascades and collisions, and the enormous thickness of this fabled wave that we stare at in wonder! Kudos to the brave kids in the water, Matadors all whether surfers, boogers, or the original body surfers. Thanks.

One of the better surf videos i've seen. Frightening waves, and so close to the shore! I've never seen that before. Usually they're very far out there.

***** It just looks so unusual. Not a nice place for a dive, i'd guess. Those waves could kill if you're not experienced.
***** also if you have spearfished at wedge on a small day you would see that it is about 2 feet deep or waist deep than there a is 2 or 3 foot drop off and you go head deep.
I have seen many videos, been there in person and even braved it a few times in my younger days and that by far was the best wedge experience I have ever witnessed.. very nice....

I never saw film of the Wedge in the summer if 1969 or 70 when a HUGE south swell came pumping in from Mexico. The radio reported that at Dana Point twenty people got washed off the jetty. We went to the Wedge and the rescue boat was in the water trying to get guys that got so hammered they were exhausted out of the water, but the sets kept coming in and they barely made it over the set waves. One older guy with a shaved head would go out at the lull and catch the set wave, then come in and rest, then go out again. That set wave formed and was starting to go over the jetty at the far end. These had to be around twenty feet ! The lifeguards dragged several guys out of the water completely exhausted and limp, what a sight that day ! There was one guy with a movie camera on a tripod and the camera looked professional but I never saw that day in film.

Huntington pier is a great spot when you are 12 or 13. Even on a day with decent swells you have time between sets to recover when you are learning. I think my divorce was more peaceful than the first time I realized how I was going to be getting back to shore at the Wedge. The water was a beautiful green with shades of blue from the beach. It changed to teeth full of grit and the endurance to paddle, duck dive and remember what face first shore break is all about. Hell to the no! Great Video.
Beautiful footage I love watching others surf the wedge. I'd never do it.
Im glad i got to grow up near the wedge when hardboards were not allowed. A blissful decade of bodysurfing and sponging this great spot without the danger and hassle of surfers.

Wow. It is still the same. I grew up in Newport off Jamboree in East Bluffs. Graduated from Mater Dei in 1978. I now live in NYC metro. The wedge was always for dudes who were crazy. With huge wave breaking on 6 inches of water I was 16 yrs old in 1976 and was body surfing the wedge. I got slammed and did a face plant in the sand. I went for it! My whole face was skinned. I guess a full face scab was a badge of honor / courage? Nice video. It is true to life.

This video captures the Wedge like none other. But you have to stand on the sand and watch to get the full power that is pummeling down in such shallow water. It's crazy to see someone ride a wave that's double over-head or more, and then stand up in thigh-high water. We don't get the swells that make the Wedge go off very often, but when they come, it's nice to know someone captures it so beautifully. If anybody tries it, don't break your neck.

Best Wedge video I've ever seen! When I see the freefalls, I keep thinking, foot and a half of water at the bottom. They couldn't have all survived.
great vid, good surfing; i used to surf the wedge in the mid 60s before surfboards were introduced to the wedge. it was assumed back then that board surfing the wedge was certain suicide. surfers are much better than the earlier baby boom surfers like me. i love to watch people surf. Wow. SURFERS RULE!
This video is my favorite of all wedge videos and the wedge is basically in my backyard so it's awesome to see the people get destroyed in these massive waves
