The Making of the Wilson Airless Prototype Basketball

  • A first-of-its-kind breakthrough, the Airless Prototype eliminates the need to inflate the ball. Instead, it relies on a 3D-printed lattice structure and research-grade materials to replicate the bounce of a traditional basketball. The surface of the ball consists of small hexagonal holes, allowing air to pass through freely. Featuring eight panel-like lobes and a familiar seam structure, this is a ball unlike anything we’ve ever seen designed to play like the basketballs we’ve always known.

I made something almost identical to this about 10 years ago using SLS Nylon for Olympic research.
This would bounce, but nothing like a basketball! It’s not isotropic due to the layers, it’s round enough, but slippery plastic, so it won’t behave predictably like a traditionally made ball would, even if it’s made from TPU.

It’s the same resources at 10 years ago. The high end 3D printing technology has hardly changed in over 20 years. It’s just the applications that are changing and becoming so-called “world firsts”.
Aerodynamics is also an issue, it’s can bounce fairly normally on that hard carpet, but throwing distance it will certainly move around unpredictably as any plastic balls generally do.
When working with the Olympic committee on this, it never came anywhere near existing applications, but always made interesting and potential alternatives.

Very cool but I’m sorry I’m a Spaulding guy there indoor outdoor balls just last longer especially in street ball the Wilson would turn to Swade a lot quicker. That’s a cool ball 🏀 my days are over
