There should be a rule against sreaming loudly on every hit of the ball. Its a form of cheating as your opponent cannot hear the ball being hit and it's distracting. Not to mention annoying for those watching...the fans.
Watching her having hitting practice at full pace on the outside courts, not a banshee yell is heard - funny that. She was taught to scream while hitting by her coach in her early teens to help with distracting opponents and covering the different types of noise coming from the ball strike.
Wayne Kerr yes, its very true. That kind of yell is not natural, made to cover your ball hitting sounds which the opponent can use to judge the spin and stroke penetration.
Seles started it (at least she was the first player I heard doing that)... i used to hate watching matches with her in it for that reason, and became a staunch Graff supporter too :)
There's a difference between the noises you make when you are exerting yourself and noises you make to try to trip up your opponent. This is the later and should be classified as cheating.
Do you know how many tennis players to this and always have and still do and nobody has ever said a word or complained.... I mean i would consider cheating doing what Serena and her coach got caught doing in the u.s open a few years ago when her coach was "coaching" (that's what it's called) her from the stands behind the oppenent via hand signals and the umpire caught onto it and told the coach to stop and then Serena got all "triggered" and accusing the umpire of accusing her of cheating and demanded an apology from him (which he didn't give) and then she kept rampaging and threw her racket and then kept on going at the umpire and then started talking crap about his family (later the coach admitted that he was coaching her and giving hand signals which is 100% against the rules in any major tournament and has always been against the rules and is known by everyone)
@@richardgrace5043 This isn't about Serena and Maria. It's about Maria.. It doesn't matter how many players grunt or shriek. It wasn't done before Monica Seles. Just because Serena's coach tried to cheat and because other players grunt doesn't justify Maria's attempt at cheating. Maria never made a sound while she was practicing. Her screeches got louder and longer as the match got tighter toward the end. It was a tactic to distract the other player and keep them from hearing the sound of their racket hitting the ball. And she took drugs. Cheat-er.
Azarenka is another one, a scream/wail that would last well after the ball strike and continue sometimes after the other player hit a return. But magically her wail cuts off every single time she hits the ball into the net. Every single time. It’s magic that her maximum effort screech isn’t necessary any more once the ball hits the net.
Well yeah it's like golf, after they hit the ball, they generally keep the golf club in the air until the ball lands. It's not like she's doing it for fun, it clearly makes her perform better.

It's a matter which has been hotly debated for a while now by tennis authorities and professionals alike and it's widely regarded by those in the know that this level of grunting is not involuntary. It is in fact not grunting at all but screaming and shouting and is absolutely used tactically. Many people have observed Sharapova training and she doesn't make a peep, just like Seles did and Azarenka does, she uses it to affect the concentration of the opponent where as Serena uses it more sporadically to intimidate the opponent when in the ascendancy. You quite often will hear other female players grunting when really exerting themselves in matches but it sounds natural, nothing like this screaming nonsense. The WTA have been discussing plans to try and regulate this kind of thing but are struggling to come up with a way of measuring what is and is not acceptable as a grunt and how to enforce it (i.e. prove that the player is faking it etc.). Keep watching to the end and you'll see she never comes anywhere near to screaming even when hitting the ball as hard as she can on the run at full stretch. If she practices on other occasions with the full screaming its because she's practicing for when she uses it in her matches. This video proves it is NOT involuntary so just piss off with your biased views once and for all and take your nose out of Sharapova's ass

I noticed this in the gym. If I am on my last repitions of a set, I do start to grunt. It even takes me a few moments to realise that I am doing it. So yeah, I belive some players just don't notice themselves doing it.
There is nothing wrong with grunting in tennis. But, when you scream to hit the ball and your scream CARRIES on after you hit the ball (a la Azarenka and Sharapova), and up until your opponent hits the ball, then there is the problem.
supersalty "your "so called facts" are nothing more than an opinion of a simple mind"no they were just facts. learn to be humble when youre shown your errors. everyone is wrong occasionally.
She should be banned until she stops doing that. Not even a noise of exertion it's a ridiculous sound to put off the other player. Blatant cheating and she got to the top with it. If she wasn't attractive they would have banned and fined her years ago.
I don't think you realize how hard she's hitting those balls. If you're hitting that hard, you'd be grunting too. She can keep up with Serena and Maria is tiny compared to Serena. Keep that in perspective.
Chelsea Wang She isn't grunting she's making a ridiculous noise. There is a big difference between somebody grunting and going "WOOO!". You can't explain it as exertion it's something she would have had to train herself to do. Grunting is acceptable all players do it. What she does is to distract the other player which is one reason she wins.
I can understand where she's coming from and what you're saying is a possibility. I just feel for her because a lot of the great tennis she plays sometimes is overshadowed because she's not taken seriously. She's a woman, blonde, tall, beautiful, grunts like crazy, and because of that her talents as a tennis player get downplayed often. I just think the tennis community is sometimes overly harsh toward their female players vs. male players. Almost all the top women tennis players are criticized for factors outside their tennis game. Also maybe she grunts because of the nerves and just the mental state you're in when you're playing to win? I breathe differently and think differently when I play to win vs. playing just for fun.
There is a documentary on how the pros are taught at a very young age to yell as they hit to distract/confuse their opponent. Not only does it work but they have been training newer generations to scream even louder.
This sort of grunting should be punished with a penalty point or two…some of the best champions never indulged in this kind of thing…it's very distracting & puts of most players In an intense match it's almost like crowd trouble, strangely women seem to do it more
There's fact which is unrelated to Sharapova's grunting: this is actually the late bloomer Li Na's first appearance in a grand slam tournament at almost 23, she made it to the 3rd round and lost to Sharapova 06 26 in this match.
When you scream like that your opponent can't hear when the ball is hit properly. You can hear that effect in the video. Since the match is fast, hearing when the ball is struck is important since seeing it might make you be a bit slow in reacting. Her scream is throwing her opponent off.
It's not even a grunt it's a high pitched 'whooooo', after she takes a deep rasping inspiration. I don't blame them for laughing (at her); it's absolutely ridiculous. Just imagine Fedora or Rafa coming out with such rot - at least they give a good grunt when they hit a very forceful ball. This (Sharapova) shit should be banned. It (she) makes a laughing stock of what is once was a great game.
Richard Carrillo It's actually not in the rules. Serena Williams has been called on making noises before it's just that the tennis umpires/powers at be are too chicken to enforce their own rules.
Releasing a loud grunt is actually just as self-enhancing as it is detrimental to an opponent, it’s used in other sports and activities as well to increase muscle use.
Tennis requires agility and stamina more than muscle use though. If you have ever tried a long match of tennis, you’ll notice it takes almost no effort to hit the ball. A lot of coaching is actually getting kids to not hit the ball so card because of how sensitive a tennis hit can be
That’s such BS! Martina Navratilova had it right when she called it cheating. It covers the sound of the ball when it’s hit. I naturally make a slight noise when I hit a deep baseline shot and I’m exhausted but like any other player, you could not here it unless you were standing near the baseline on my side of the court.
1. I'm old enough to remember tennis before Monica Selles started doing this in the 1990s. Tennis players did not grunt before then. 2. Maria never made a sound during her full on practices. Her noises were manufactured and contrived.
She has to realize that her screams are extremely annoying for the crowd and especially to for her opponents...I can understand the fact of a player, after a long rally or a long match close to the end, expressing vocally his tense and tiredness but she screams from the very first point..even if I had a free ticket for a match of her I would deny to watch her playing...
"She has to realize that her screams are extremely annoying for the crowd and especially to for her opponents" Why do you think she does it? :) Grunting does not improve anything, and it actually takes time and energy to do.
I'd be rude to if i had to listen to all that screaming when I came to watch a tennis match. Seems very likely it is gamesmanship to scream that loud, even though I'm sure Sharapova denies it.
Mzee1084 if you know what tennis is you have to listen to screams too, because tennis means emotions, and they just show their emotions, try to play 2 hours like they play and try not to show any emotion, they're women can you understand that?? sometimes even men are screaming like little girls..this is the part of THAT tenis that you wanna watch
Maria Vagfyan Screaming every time you hit the ball is a form of exhaling, and a form of gamesmanship in my opinion and many others when it is so loud, not anything to do with emotions.
Mzee1084 sometimes they even don't notice that they're screaming, it's not about gamesmanship..did you try to hit the ball like them?? try and you'll see, i know what i'm talking about and i'm sure about what i'm talking about :D
Notice that for most of these sounds, it doesn't coincide with the time of hitting the ball. She waits a half second to make it more interfering for the opponent.
The screaming is too loud and should count as noise violations. Defend Sharapova all you want about how she can't help it and needs it for timing and exhaling but she could train herself to exhale without screaming her head off. Na Li is perfect here. You can hear her exhale but she is not loud and many former and current top players don't make terribly loud noises. The WTA needs to put new rules into play and enforce them. It prevents opponents from hearing the ball coming off the racket making timing harder and the noise is just a distraction. As a viewer I won't watch women's tennis ever when certain players are playing because I cannot handle the high pitched screams. I have sensitive ears as well for high pitched sounds and it is too bothersome. Sharapova, Azarenka, Serena are amongst the worst.
It should count as violations because you have sensitive ears? You cant expect everyone to have the same tendicies lol its like telling you to act like me because your annoying
I think they were laughing because halfway through the point Maria's howl changed into something different. She started holding on to the end until the ball was on Li's court. I usually don't mind the grunting but what puts me off about Maria's is that she changes it and often during points. People complain about Vika's but at least Vika is consistent with her howl.
i understand grunting when you hit it, cause you’re going at for hours and hours it’s gonna get tiring. but literally soundin like princess peach ain’t right 😂😂💀💀💀
I think she had just started making her signature grunt. At the 2004 Wimbledon Final, besides the minor exhale noise that's barely audible, she was quiet as a mouse on most points.
If I was playing her I would be proper pissed off.

I noticed this in the gym. If I am on my last repitions of a set, I do start to grunt. It even takes me a few moments to realise that I am doing it. So yeah, I belive some players just don't notice themselves doing it.
what she's doing isn't grunting. It's screaming. You don't need to be that loud to exert power and air out of your body
I always turn the volume up and close my eyes when Sharapova plays :P
KSI?
the peace and quiet, will end in may 2017
anfeild8 I've already muted my TV just in case she comes back sooner.
One of the many reasons i love Roger... No late serves, no fakes, no sick grunting.. pure wholesome tennis
That guy. Wins. The internet. Hands down!
There is nothing wrong with grunting in tennis. But, when you scream to hit the ball and your scream CARRIES on after you hit the ball (a la Azarenka and Sharapova), and up until your opponent hits the ball, then there is the problem.
Imagine knowing a whole stadium is laughing at you for your ridiculous screaming.
Imagine giving af about australians
Imagine knowing the whole stadium paid to see you play tennis
Sharapova can scream and grunt all she wants, serena would still whip her ass.
In grunting and screaming? Wow that's impressive
@@RennieAsh ... 8 years to reply. I'll do better. Only 2 years ... SW rent-free in ya head. toodles!
I don't understand why the women players feel that they have to grunt so loudly. Most of the men players don't do that
most of the men don't do it and most of the women don't do it either. But there are still men and women on tour who grunt. get over it.
sueannwashere So you don't like my opinion. I don't care Get over it.
SuperSaltydog77 lol you're mad. I literally just debunked your post by stating a fact.
sueannwashere your "so called facts" are nothing more than an opinion of a simple mind
supersalty "your "so called facts" are nothing more than an opinion of a simple mind"no they were just facts. learn to be humble when youre shown your errors. everyone is wrong occasionally.
Chelsea Wang
She isn't grunting she's making a ridiculous noise.
If you're in a match as intense as that, you probably wouldn't pay any attention to the grunt.
I think you're being quite naïve, M CP.
Sharapova knows full well what she's doing. It's called mind games
There is a documentary on how the pros are taught at a very young age to yell as they hit to distract/confuse their opponent. Not only does it work but they have been training newer generations to scream even louder.
Sounds unsportsmanlike.
This sort of grunting should be punished with a penalty point or two…some of the best champions never indulged in this kind of thing…it's very distracting & puts of most players
In an intense match it's almost like crowd trouble, strangely women seem to do it more
the point of the grunt is to distract the opponent, its fair game as long as it doesnt sound like a word. its a choice if you wanna do it or not
The umpire telling the crowd to be quiet during play while Sharapova screams like a banshee. Too funny.
I would have yelled “BITE ME!” right back if I was there.
Her scream is throwing her opponent off.
congratulations! you figured it out! thats the point!
And they should keep throwing the opponents off from here on out.
That Dimitrov had to have his headphone ready every night ;D
Gods Maria is so beautiful, note, she not wearing makeup
Literally no one asked
Bro don’t simp
Interstellar was actually about finding out who asked, they still haven't found who.
@@beneyweneys underrated comment
I love the grunt. It’s awesome; great tool to use for the body to exude more power to the ball.
All I can imagine is fireworks going off one by one every time she shouts.
I always fear that my neighbors think I have a porn addiction because I watch a lot of tennis 😂
A woman who repeatedly makes a sound like that knows exactly what she’s doing…
It's not even a grunt it's a high pitched 'whooooo', after she takes a deep rasping inspiration. I don't blame them for laughing (at her); it's absolutely ridiculous. Just imagine Fedora or Rafa coming out with such rot - at least they give a good grunt when they hit a very forceful ball. This (Sharapova) shit should be banned. It (she) makes a laughing stock of what is once was a great game.
She's the highest paid athlete, so she can grunt all she wants hahahha
It's very disrespectful to her opponent to be making loud noises and treating it as a joke
She isn't doing it to cheat.... it's a way to strengthen your core to hit the ball harder
I know I'd go crazy if I had to watch all full sets with hearing her shriek after every hit.
where did she say it?
someone from public said it to her, very disrespectful.
Richard Carrillo No it's not. 99.9% of players don't do it, and the ones that do it are trying to gain an advantage. It sounds stupid.
stevej02 so that gives them right to tell her to shut up? That's her way of playing, gaining a legal advantage has never been a problem in sports.
Richard Carrillo I believe the term is unsportsmanlike behaviour.
Richard Carrillo It's actually not in the rules. Serena Williams has been called on making noises before it's just that the tennis umpires/powers at be are too chicken to enforce their own rules.
Crowd sounds like they’re watching a comedic duo
Damn, the video in 2005, before 16 years ago! Days went fast
Wtf this is so old that the Australian Open had a green hardcourt
She makes the noise to distract the opponent.
She got distracted when the crowd did it.
Irony at it's finest.
I was expecting Maria to be like SHUT THE FUCK UP!!
They should start doing this at chess matches!
🤣🤣
I actually agree
Releasing a loud grunt is actually just as self-enhancing as it is detrimental to an opponent, it’s used in other sports and activities as well to increase muscle use.
Tennis requires agility and stamina more than muscle use though. If you have ever tried a long match of tennis, you’ll notice it takes almost no effort to hit the ball. A lot of coaching is actually getting kids to not hit the ball so card because of how sensitive a tennis hit can be
I never had the money to buy cable TV but I think I didn't miss anything worth to watch back then.
You need to hear Simona Halep
It's good to hear the spectators gave her shit for her stupid screaming. It's bloody annoying and it must get on her opponent's nerves as well
Imagine, the other player starts imitating her noise and she gets annoyed. 🤣
I will start watching Tennis if every match went like that.
"As a courtesy to the audience, please do not scream during the point. Thank you."
For my opinion: sound is another element to give self confident as to all the senses are to work so that your energy boost..
That’s such BS! Martina Navratilova had it right when she called it cheating. It covers the sound of the ball when it’s hit. I naturally make a slight noise when I hit a deep baseline shot and I’m exhausted but like any other player, you could not here it unless you were standing near the baseline on my side of the court.
the point of it is to distract the opponent, fair play as long as it doesnt sound like a word
Surely doing it as a job you'd eventually grow out of it, no?
Agreed...grunting is one thing, but what Maria and Victoria do just seems like unfair tactics.
I played tennis. Those sounds are inevitable because of the effort.Jessus.
1. I'm old enough to remember tennis before Monica Selles started doing this in the 1990s. Tennis players did not grunt before then.
2. Maria never made a sound during her full on practices. Her noises were manufactured and contrived.
wow, I've overlooked it until now for some reason but Maria Sharapova is so beautiful
"She has to realize that her screams are extremely annoying for the crowd and especially to for her opponents"
Why do you think she does it? :)
Grunting does not improve anything, and it actually takes time and energy to do.
@Rare Tennis a little? Ooh please... this is obnoxious
rude crowd, have a little respect if you came to see the game
I came to hear Maria scream.
I think she is adorable. I would looove listen to her all day long lol
LiNa is very Calm, you are the best!
Notice that for most of these sounds, it doesn't coincide with the time of hitting the ball. She waits a half second to make it more interfering for the opponent.
thats the point :)
I love how the crowd jeers whenever the umpire says "no yelling during play" or "have consideration for the players"
“NEVER!” is what I would have said back regardless.
I watched the video without earphones, so the sound came out of my notebook-speakers.
My girlfriend came in
"Oh man could you turn those porns off?!"
Lol your funny
ThunderCuber3 How so?
It should count as violations because you have sensitive ears? You cant expect everyone to have the same tendicies lol its like telling you to act like me because your annoying
ThunderCuber3 Did you even read my entire comment about how it affects the opponent or are you just cherry picking?
ThunderCuber3 lol so someone without "sensitive ears" doesn't hear Sharapova's ear pulsing moans?
There is no excuse for Sharapova's screaming. Crowd totally justified.
I thought the French Open crowd was terrible, but this one here is SAVAGE!
sounds like a dump valve on a WRC car...
Since Maria is this loud playing tennis, she must be loud doing other things😂
😁👍🏼
I don't remember hearing Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert, or Billie Jean King sounding like an aroused dove.
She still WON!
I think they were laughing because halfway through the point Maria's howl changed into something different. She started holding on to the end until the ball was on Li's court. I usually don't mind the grunting but what puts me off about Maria's is that she changes it and often during points. People complain about Vika's but at least Vika is consistent with her howl.
so proud to be australian after watching this video, screaming should be banned
It is banned, but the judges wont talk because if they did Sharapova would make them look bad. Its 2018 now, media is king.
i understand grunting when you hit it, cause you’re going at for hours and hours it’s gonna get tiring. but literally soundin like princess peach ain’t right 😂😂💀💀💀
I agree, her scream releases power in her every shot...
Would you want to listen to that?
Maria Bloody Shutupova!
I think she had just started making her signature grunt. At the 2004 Wimbledon Final, besides the minor exhale noise that's barely audible, she was quiet as a mouse on most points.
why is everyone so old i mean they were all already around in the 90s and early 2000s dammit
The crowd also watches players like Federer, Murray and Djokovic who hit the ball many times harder and don't make a sound.
