Much good stuff here. This video is excellent. I'm a substitute teacher and I will integrate many tips from this video as I'm constantly facing new students.. I like the idea of standing in the middle of class as they walk in and making eye contact and keeping that contact until a student looks away. I like the reciting of rules especially respect everyone around you and be quiet when another person is speaking, then asking students to repeat those rules- I would keep it simple and use those two important rules. I like the idea of saying 3,2,1 then I will expect everybody to be quiet. And the practice interviewing a classmate then having each student introduce that person to the class is a fun idea when I need to fill time. About the eye contact, the John F Kennedy speech class he had at Harvard emphasized the importance of eye contact with a key saying- "don't talk to anything that can't talk back to you". That even if you are scanning a group from person to person dont begin speaking until you make eye contact with somebody.

I have a question, how do we engage different ages into learning styles? Not just one particular class and not just one particular lesson. A curriculum created to create the whole entire class introduction mass. You have great points, but it's so hard to make sure a student is paying attention entirely. Being a student, I always thought I had a hard time being one of the many to pay attention to what I can't pay attention to in class. Thanks for the video lesson this helped a lot.
Good luck for your classes! Try using more eye contact, soon you'll get very comfortable with it and notice a massive change in your confidence and teaching. 😄😊
Definitely a good video. I agree with everything you said in the video. Students perform well in the class when rules are explained clearly from the beginning because they know where they stand and where you stand, at least from my experience.
The very next day I m having my class though I m teaching since last 20 years I m a bit nervous I just watched your video and it boost my confidence. Thank u so much for tips.
Very interesting video. As a quick question, what would be your advice for designing a 5-6 minute demo self-introduction to a class of young students who don't speak English? I have been working on it for a few days, but it is proving more difficult than I originally thought, as I don't have access to any materials.
Often teacher overthink and overplan lessons... 5 min is very quick. Do a quick intro, ask them some basic questions to show how it is done and ask them to think of questions they want to ask you. If you have time you can let them practice with a partner. Remember, you are the focus, they want to get to know you. So use yourself as the content. For example: Write down 5 facts of yourself on the board. Age, hobby, dislike, favorite food. Ask students what each one means. Then how to ask the question: How old are you? Then ask them to write down their 5 facts. Very easy and it'll eat up your 6 min. Don't worry, focus on the basics and it'll be fine! 😄
I agree that a teacher is the one who is the leader in class. I also agree that the teacher should be strict. When I was a student, strict teachers were always the ones who gave the most knowledge. Nowadays, a lot of teachers want to be more like a friend to their students and they want them to always have fun. You can be friendly and you can have fun, but I do believe that there must be boudaries between you and the students, and when people learn, it is necessary to have some activities that are not always "fun": reading, grammar, etc. So, it is a balance.
@Juniver Hosenfeld thank you so much 😊 all the credit goes to this video from where i get clues to Involve with childrens and even my self confidence grows
I am currently handling an ESL class of 5 kids with level 0-1 comprehension. I have already talked to the owner of the school but they would not let me go. I am the third teacher to handle this class and now I understand why. I am at my wits end as they cannot understand the concept of rules as they are both kindergarten aged and not english speakers. Your tips have given me an idea on what to do. Hopefully it will work.
Hello there! This is some excellent advice. I was wondering about your pair interviews: Do you repeat the exercise, or do you have, for example, one 4 minute exercise where A interviews B for 2 minutes then B interviewws A for 2 mins, and THEN you have each person talk about their partner in front of the class? Do you ask every student a question; it seems like it'd be easy to run out of questions though.
Usually it takes too long for all the students to present their friend to class. So I let the play rock-paper-scissors to decide. Loser presents, winner asks me a question. I return the favor by asking another question or the same back to him. So you don't have to think of all the questions.
Thanks so much ...We've got something useful for me as a teacher, we know that as a teacher we should mastery all.... Not weak... Should be ready for all activities......always being fun.. enjoy and relax Ok
Thank you for your tips, this really helped. I am a new teacher and will start in a school in Taipei in two weeks. I am super nervous as I have never taught in a classroom before (only virtually one on one). I will be teaching English and I am scared about some of their questions. Even though I am familiar with the grammar and how to explain things, there is things that I still need to look up or simply just don't know. What do you do when they ask you a question and you don't know the answer? I am scared they will eat me alive with questions and I will have a blank look on my face. HA! :) Thank you!
I get this question a lot. Most teachers are afraid of looking incompetent in front of their students. The best way to deal with it is to say "I'm not so sure about that. Let me look it up to make sure and I'll let you know in the next class." Say it with a smile. Students don't need you to be perfect, but they need you to be a strong leader. Don't worry about what you don't know or can't do. Focus on what value you bring to them, how you can help them and what knowledge you can share. Have fun and be confident!

What can these question be like? I have trouble making sense of it. I hope you can help me with that. Thanks so much in advance.
Hi Ngãn. So when they introduce themselves I ask them questions. For example if they say their hobby is playing soccer I'll ask them who their favorite team is. If they say they have a brother, ask them what his name is, or when his birthday is. By doing this it shows them that you are the boss in the class and they answer to you. It also trains them to be more responsive in class. Hope this helps. 😄

Excellent stuff! Self-evident truths of human interaction. An admirable balance of both supportive and effective. Students at any age do well with some structure, they (we) like it! I'm not a teacher formally at the moment, but this can make me a better *student*.... keeping these basics in mind as I potentially evaluate a teacher. Would love to hear feed-back on this: let's say you're not a classroom teacher but a *tutor* (in this case thinking about music - but what can be said universally about all subjects?) As a paid tutor, you have a complicated balance. If you turn to mush and just feed the student's ego (since he/she is paying you), then how do you honestly move them along in learning? You might hear this from them "Hey, I'm not making progress!" To you which you could say ... Yeah, you goof off the whole lesson and you don't practice... :-) How can you lay down the law when someone's paying you? Sure there's no simple answer. But I'd like to hear any thoughts.
Thank you Daria! ^^ At the end of the year I hope to bring out a super series for teachers. I'm planning to make 100 videos on teaching situations that I hope will be able to help. I know it's far away but I'm super excited about it. Until then stay strong and enjoy being a teacher! 😀

Very great and insightful video! I'm sure this video has helped many teachers with their first day introduction lesson.
Thank you for your kind comment, Sheldon! I'm really happy if the video is useful for teachers out there. 😊
You are doing a great job Cathy! I know how difficult it can be. Stand your ground and be firm.
Thank u so much ur video is sooo helpful I will be a teacher nshaellah I wish u read my first comment... cheers from Morocco.
I start teaching in august. Teaching a basic acting class! Thank you!!
That sounds exciting, Mikey! 😃 I hope it goes really well! 🙏
Exactly! Good luck with your classes, teacher! 😃
I applied for pgce secondary school, I have a fear of presenting, I'm hoping this will fix itself. This is a great video though
Good luck Watvid! I wish you all the best. 🙏
I'm really grateful 🙏 sir, you lifted my spirits up
Thank you for your tips, this really helped. HA! :)
Thank you!
I get this question a lot. Most teachers are afraid of looking incompetent in front of their students. The best way to deal with it is to say "I'm not so sure about that. Let me look it up to make sure and I'll let you know in the next class."
Say it with a smile.
Students don't need you to be perfect, but they need you to be a strong leader.
Don't worry about what you don't know or can't do. Focus on what value you bring to them, how you can help them and what knowledge you can share.
Have fun and be confident!
@@etacude Thank you. Yes, you are right, I should feel comfortable saying this. :) I will try!
@@etacude 100% I agree with you about saying "I am not so sure about that, let me look it up to make sure, and I will let you know in the next class"😊
Great advice . It is same pretty ,much I do when I teach in university.
Hi Eric!
I fully agree with you on" Hope for the best but prepare for the Worst " These are indeed wise words. I appreciate that. Thumbs up! Cheers!

Thank you so much. I was so nervous and I didn’t have any idea how to start it. But you gave me courage. Thanks a lot.
You'll be great Alfi! 👍
Just be confident and have fun. The students will follow you when you teach them in a way that helps them improve and let's them enjoy the experience.
Good luck! 😃
These are good tips! Kind of what I had in mind all ready. I will start tomorrow with a class of 9 year olds and it can be hard when they have changed so many teachers to set new rules and routines. I’m a bit nervous because this class has a bad rep on the school for being unruly, but I will try my best to take them into fourth grade next year :)
I believe in you ogdooh! Rather be strict from the start. You need to show strength, so that they can trust you to be their leader. Good luck! 👍
etacude thank you for the kind words! You really inspired me. The first two days has transpired and it feels like I’ve gained respect in a good way. Not to say there’s no things to work on but it’s awesome to feel respected and listened to while being friendly coming from pupils you know have been a notorious class.
@@etacude sir can i talk with you, please sir, give me opportunity , and i am from india, sir pleass give ur skype id or emeil id

My first class is gonna be soon and I am super nervous
It was marvelous. As soon as I started teaching all of the nervousness I have, they were gone. However, online teaching is different.
Thank you this is my very first time in front of my students. I have always been teaching in small bundles :p and or online only. Wish me luck.
You'll do great! Have fun and believe in yourself. Here's an idea: Take a selfie of yourself before going to school. That way you can always remember it and have it as a memory 😀
Thank you I didn’t do the picture I am out of class now. Things went very well. I love it. I will take me a selfie next time 🙄😱🤓 your video helped me a lot.

Hello lol i am Silas and i live in Angola and trynna get a better teacher for my students and as i started watching ya i'mma stand out and i'd like to think ya
Hi Silas! I'm very happy to share! 😊
Thank you for watching! 🙏
Thanks for sharing. I find these tips useful to me. Also, I have a question: In the "peer interview" activity, you said after your students' introduction, you would ask some follow up questions.
@@etacude Thanks for your help

@@etacude hye,,it's going smoothly as i follow exactly the tips that u gave and shared in the video,,thanks a lot,,😀btw i just realized this reply in the inbox,,sorry for that,,
Excellent stuff!
Today is my first class and I am watching your video before going into class.
Lots of Thanks.
How was it??
I hope you had a great first class, Village! 😄
