Super Godzilla (SNES) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

- A playthrough of Toho's 1994 license-based action game for the SNES, Super Godzilla.
With Godzilla: King of the Monsters releasing in theaters last week, I thought it only appropriate to revisit one of my favorite licensed-based games on the SNES.
The 8 and 16-bit Godzilla games tended to be quite a strange breed. You might expect a game featuring giant city-destroying mutants to play out like a beat 'em up, but oddly enough, many of the early ones didn't. The NES got two Godzilla strategy games, while the Gameboy got a puzzle game. Seriously.
And then we come to Super Godzilla. I actually have no idea how to qualify this style of gameplay - I've never played another game like it. I guess it could be described as a kaiju walking simulator of sorts, wherein the titular 80,000 ton lizard regularly gets accosted by other giant creatures as well as aggressive alien drones that resemble subway cars floating beds on ball bearings.
You have to steer Japan's favorite harbinger of doom across six different areas, searching for clues and power-ups, wiping out attack drones, and finally, going toe-to-toe with the likes of Biollante, King Ghidorah, Battra, Mecha-Godzilla, Mecha-King Ghidorah, or Bagan before being shuttled along to the next area.
You stomp around primarily using the tiny little map at the bottom of the screen, and this is so that the majority of the screen can be used to show giant close-ups of Godzilla doing his thing. The icons on the map indicate all points of interest, including important bits of info that'll help in finishing the mission.
After you've stomped around for awhile and landed yourself under attack, you are presented with a super quirky battle system that feels a bit like tug-of-war. You punch the enemy, and then start backing up to build power for your attack. The farther back you walk, the more attack power you build, but you lose all power if you're attacked before letting off your move. It's very strange at first, but it's an easy system (however unconventional) to grasp.
So like I said, it's fairly difficult to categorize this one. I think that's why I like it so much - it feels distinctly different from your average monster-themed brawler. It feels how I had always imagined controlling Godzilla would feel. The plodding pace of the game makes it truly feel like you are in control of a skyscraper with legs, and though the animation is pretty limited, the pixel art is fantastic, as is the sound. All of the classic roars and attack sounds are crystal clear, and the music does a nice job of mimicking the old-school kaiju soundtracks.
It's neither a difficult nor long game and the gameplay is fairly anaemic, but to leave it at that would be to sell the game short. It succeeds at making you feel as if you were in control of Godzilla, and there was a lot of care and effort into making it look and sound as much like the movies as possible.
If that sounds good to you, I'm sure you'll love it as much as I did. This one really is a huge question of personal taste.
*I had previously done a recording of Super Godzilla, but it was getting old and the picture was a bit fuzzy, so this is a brand new, 60fps HD playthrough to replace it.

You have to give this game some credit, It made Bagan, an unfortunate concept Kaiju who never got to see the light of day, a actual time to shine.
Super Godzilla was the first kaiju game that I ever played that effectively nailed the feel of walking around as a giant rubber suit, and even today that feeling still holds up. Its gameplay is completely oddball, but if you've ever wanted to smash a city as a 16-bit mega monster, this is awesome.
boring
@@bombacoot Agreed. This Game Doesn't Look Like Much Fun.
This game's great! Love how it captures the campy charm of the old-school kaijus. ...And it feels a little bit like an RPG, like Pokemon or something, which, understandably, is not _everyone's_ cup of tea, but I'll be damned if this beast is ever going to brute force or Hyper Beam his way out of everyone's hearts! You can't help but admire the people of Tokyo, having a massive abomination terrorize the city every other week for over 50 years. You get used to it.
I used to play it at my aunts house then played it again when i got older and learned very quickly how much i hate Mecha Godzilla and Battra in this game
I hear that, amigo!
This would have been so much easier to play if I actually read anything as a kid.
i didn't even know english back then and i still managed to beat it xD it was hell tho hahaha
I just skipped everything when I was a kid, and I could never beat Biolante. I tried so many times, but her tentacles kept fucking me up. This is actually the first time I’ve ever seen past her fight
FACTS
I read what they said I just sucked but I eventually beat it
@@RileyJ3866 if you can emulate it give it another try
I remember as a kid not being sure if this game was bad or if I just sucked at it.
I love the attack animations they make me wish this had just been a turn based RPG
its online with no sign up and no pc to work it. even a chromebook can run it
Going to see Godzilla King of the Monsters a few years ago and hearing these themes in the movie took me back to my childhood. I remember playing this game as a little kid and loving every moment of it. Then seeing Godzilla on the big screen followed by the Super Godzilla remix was just too much for me.
I was obsessed with this game in "97. it took a whole month of my summer but I finally beat it.
97 and you were still playing the SNES? Were you impoverished? The rest of us were onto the saturn and playstation
@@gunsharck Yes I was. I had a full time job at 8 years old delivering newspapers after school. I saved the bit of my pay I got to keep for months to get Super Godzilla.
@@gunsharck You know the SNES still rocked, even with the Playstation, right? lol
@@gunsharckplaying in 2024
I wasn't ready for next gen in '97 neither. So many SNES and Genesis games yet to be played, and Saturn, PS1, and 64 wasnt worth retail price. I wasn't spoiled nor rich, we didn't even have internet yet and it would be a while til i discovered emulation.
I never got passed the 2nd stage as a kid I’d get lost in the maps 😂😂😂😂
I need to play this game.
me either
Dude! Same!
Oh yes,the map is messed up like You're trying to look for something you can't,i don't know how someone can make the map so messed up
@@felipeaugusto7720 o mapa era consfuso
Bruh I loved this game as a kid... Lol man the memories just hitting me hard rn
True lol although I could never beat king ghidorah
@@standardperson3189 I remember the King Ghidorah part more than anything because as a kid, it took me forever to figure out how to actually play the game lolol
Omg me too. This just took me BACK. So many amazing memories
Same! I watched this video and went straight to playing it on my snes classic.
Nostalgia overload fuel for 90s kids that's for sure lol.
This game took me so long to beat because I had to hit every special point , and it always bothered me there weren’t any ways to save progress. Still, thank you for this. I woke up thinking about it lol. It’s nice to see an obscure game from my childhood that I cherished.
Why is it that I still hear AVGN’s commentary in my head as I watch this lol
"Why does Godzilla lose health from destroying buildings, Godzilla destroys buildings all the time, that's what he's good at"
@@GenY42 it's because he's not punching them, he's crashing into them. which, is a fair point. the tutorial even said as much.
@@supersmashbro596 makes sense, it would hurt if you rammed into something
@@supersmashbro596 5:24 I know that music when an enemy is near...I like it.
Godzilla collected all Chaos Emeralds
Now Godzilla can become *Super Godzilla*
Good to watch this! Going to watch Godzilla tonight in the theater!
I saw it last weekend. It was awesome.
@@rainer250 it's one of those "only see it in the cinema with surround sound" type of movie, watching it at home would be dull, unless you have expensive surround sound home cinema
Awesome I remember getting all the way to Mecha King Ghidorah when I was a kid playing this then my Mom yelled downstairs for me to go to bed and there was no save feature. Glad to see what I would've been up against lol
Hahahahaha why didn’t you try playing again after that
Wait a sec then how are anyone gonna beat the game if is does not have a save feature
Rhiannon Rose your supposed to beat it in one sitting
@@rhiannonrose6748 games like this would be short, so the developers would make it hard as heck and as a result if you lost all your lives, you would have to start over
I remember getting this game for Christmas when I was 13 I got to open the gift early on Christmas Eve. Long story short, my mom was upset I beat the game 4 hours later. 🤦🏾♂🤦🏾♂🤷🏾♂🤷🏾♂🤣🤣😂😂
😂😢🎉
Was it worth it?
I like how Godzilla gets a Varia Suit upgrade right near the end there. Haha.
I still love playing this game on emulator from time to time.
It's cool how the US release uses the older Black Hole aliens MechaGodzilla (the original version uses MechaGodzilla II) because MechaGodzilla II wasn't available internationally yet and so most US audiences wouldn't recognize it.
I also remember being able to (only once each)...
- Reach the second Battra before it could mutate. (Gotta love how it just pops like a balloon, as the video shows.)
- Get the S Energy and become Super Godzilla against Mecha King Ghidorah and just barely being able to reach him before Tokyo was 50% destroyed (a few seconds after being warned about 45% being destroyed; Mecha King Ghidorah just happened to be on the side of the map closer to me rather than the far side like he tends to be), which allowed me to instantly become Super Godzilla again when Bagan's stage began.
The intro sounds like someone recreating the Godzilla theme with their flatulence, but besides that, this game seems pretty cool.
1:16:01 Alright. Time to get SUPER serious.
I had this game as a kid! My little brother LOVED Godzilla! (We grew up on the old black n whites) so my parents got this for him mostly. It was a challenging game man, like even for him and he was the one who could beat a rental game in like 24 hrs.
I love that the game used the iconic Godzilla March tune.
Soundtrack is super underrated
56:22 Ya'll get it? The game we're playing right now. LOL
I used to have this game:
Pros: Monster roars, 8-bit Godzilla theme, classic Mechagodzilla cameo, punching Biollante's tentacles away was a good way to start the boss battle, turning Godzilla into Space Godz- I mean, "Super Godzilla"- was fun, if you're good enough, you can do it to fight Mecha King Ghidorah.
Cons: Walking everywhere gets boring, walking into buildings gets annoying in later stages, too many UFO's, getting close to Mechagodzilla (either you know EXACTLY what I'm talking about or you have no idea), game isn't long enough (and they shouldn't have started with King Ghidorah as the first boss).
2:32 ???
It was at this moment Gidorah knew, he f**ked up.
With the force field and that damn triple-slam attack, Mecha-G was the biggest pain in the ass in the game. Most times, I just ended up using tail whips and body slams to take him out.
In the beginning, I never got past Biollante. But then I did and enjoyed the rest of the game.
This is a decent game, but seriously, WHY did it take until the damn PS2 era to get a real no bullshit Godzilla game? You figure giant monsters fighting each other and destroying everything in sight would be something game developers would be able to get right from the very get go, but they kept doing weird puzzle games or hex based simulators. The formula was simple, monster stomp, monster smash, monster RAAAWWWRR, but damn if it didn't take forever for them to realize that. Even non Godzilla licensed games like Crush, Crumble, and Chomp were weird and anything but straight forward. I guess King of the Monsters on the Neo-Geo was about the best game of that type we'd get for years.
Well, we had decent Godzilla games, but they were only released in Japan.
Godzilla Kaijuu Daikessen (SNES), and Godzilla (Arcade).
Why we couldn't get those games? I don't know, but it better be a good reason behind it.
I blew so many quarters on KotM2 at arcades when I was younger
Will forever love this game ❤
55:22 Hold on guys, it's got to be Mecha-King Ghidorah.
It is.
Hit a building lose health, absorbs nukes.
very late reply, 1 year late, godzilla gets radiation energy from nukes. buildings do not have radiation in them.
@@forest7084 even later reply, 3 years later, buildings may not have radiation in them, but that doesn't mean they have more destructive power than an atomic bomb.
This game actually doesn't look bad. It's like an rpg. Or a yu gi oh game but simple.
For 1993 standards
Graphics 10/10
Soundtrack 10/10
Gameplay 6/10
Immersion 10/10
Storyline 7/10
The game is short, kids in 1993 didn't have high expectations for video games and neither did a TV production. But for a 1.5 hour gameplay, it was immersive and full of unique experiences and music that could grip kids with short attention span over and over again. Big fan of repeating patterns.
Biollante is the heaviest Kaiju ever
This game was so hard when I was a kid. I really never beat Ghidorah until I was an adult, haha
I actually beat biollante
This game has soo much memories!!
12:56 There's another Godzilla?!?!?! .....Wait a sec...There is ONLY one Godzilla in Japan. So, according to my theoretical answer, it's MechaGodzilla.
spacegodzilla maybe
Boy do I have news for you.
It is Mechagodzilla.
Would it be cool if Toho transformed the Super Godzilla game into a Movie?
Thanks so much for uploading this! Man, do I really miss playing this game.
this is my second favorite godzilla games
This is a good start for a Godzilla game like this. I think they should try again just add selectable monsters after you complete the main story like Godzilla VS (PS4) and also have a Vs mode! Story mode with Godzilla or Story with other monsters that have somewhat unique stories to each, and a VS mode, Online and offline just have a VS mode. Selection on skins for Goji and the others Showa, Hesei, Millennium, Legendary skins. All that jazz
56:17 So basically Godzilla. Is able to become the legendary Super Godzilla!!!
Toho later used the Super Godzilla design for Space Godzilla in the 1990s.
I'm surprise toho never made a movie Godzilla Vs Bagan.
I know this reply is 3 years in the making, but that concept kept being toyed with until it became godzilla vs destroyah
I've played this when I was 7-8 UGHH so much nostalgia!!!!!
I actually managed to complete Super Godzilla years ago!
I feel that this one of the games that AVGN did a little bit of a disservice to of being overly critical off. Seems like a really nice game to me. It looks like it should and the monsters you expect to have are there. Sound is great as well.
if the game didnt have so much bull shit in it then maybe
I got this as a kid when it was on clearance and had no idea what I was doing
Why Godzilla look so cute in this game? I love it
Idk bro...I want to play this game.
何かの本に載ってたバガン、赤と黒のどこかイリスを思い起こさせる色でかっこよかった
I wise this game alone with monster of monsters was on the switch online. Love to give it a play.
It's basically Kaiju Oregon trail!
Why do I unironically like this game
Godzilla is approaching the generator. The generator is losing power.
HAHA!
I enjoyed this game when I was little!!
I love Grand Theft Auto V even more!!!!
This game is what made me fall in love with Godzilla as a kid, however being the dumb child i was i never really knew what i was doing. I don’t think i ever got past mecha godzilla lol i can’t remember
I wish I could play it over again but I need a SNES!
They have snes emulators. Actually just downloaded the rom today and gonna play it later tonight
We neee more Godzilla/Kaiju Games again
And I finally managed to complete this game too!
34:38 It’s not very effective
Just watch minus one and I didn't know this game was in my emulation collection.😂 Great game and awesome sound ost.
I beat this game with a broken controller. The L button didn’t work, so I couldn’t use power-ups. But I still beat it.
That's badass bro! I never made it past Battra without the red items.
I wish I could play this game again, I could never beat Biolante. I tried so many times, but her tentacles kept fucking me up. This is actually the first time I’ve ever seen past her fight
Same
@@Spirosbotos update: I found it on a website to play on my phone, AND I FUCKING FINALLY BEAT HER AND THE WHOLE GAME IM SO HAPPY/PROUD!!!
I'd say MechaGodzilla (in the US version of the game; the Japanese version had MechaGodzilla II) was the most annoying battle for me because of his constant body slamming interrupting you before you could attack (then sometimes followed up immediately with an attack of its own).
@@HalfDemonInuyasha yeah you definitely can only beat him by pure chance and hope that you can get to him before he starts body checking. I just got lucky more times than not against him, honestly.
But I found a website that had it as a browser game, AND I FINALLY BEAT HER AND THE GAME!! Fucking 17 years later, and I finally got to see what the ending was like 😅
Love to see how heisei takes the only godzilla to become super and defeat someone more powerfull than destroyah
This is a blast from the past. If memory serves, holding the D pad speeds up Godzilla a little bit. Neither Super Godzilla or Bagan unleashed their ultimate attacks. Sad face
Because this guy sucks at raising Godzilla's spirit
19:03 Told ya it's MechaGodzilla.
I used to play super Godzilla that I got from Kmart a long time ago!
I just noticed something in this snes game, Godzilla can loose control if you're not careful!
It's not the SNES's fault at all!

UGGHHH

The Year 199X mysterious message suddenly arriyes announcing a general attack on all of Japan 🇯🇵🇰🇷🎎🎍🎌🎋🎉🎉🎏🎐🎑. Then, just as in the message, first King Ghidorah appears in Osaka and starts to tear the city apart. Helpless before the monster, the Self-Defense Agency turns its eyes to Godzilla, sleeping at the bottom of the Sea of Japan 🍜🍛🍚🍙🍘🍣🍤🍥🍡🍲🍲🍢🏯🌁🎠🎡🎢🏙, as its final weapon.
The Godzilla did a new enemy appears in King Ghidorah very people I question times with her destroy the city seens more to King of the Monsters is final hope.
Two powerful monsters Bagon and Super Godzilla!!
Mediocre game, but the soundtrack kicks ass! It even got released officially as an album twice!
This was one of the first games I beat when I was a kid I wish my snes and collection didn't get stolen loved this game only thing I thought was weird was you had to turn it off or rest at the end didn't go back to title screen like most games do
it got stolen!? how terrible!
Yeah the roar is cool
Wow I haven’t seen this game since I was 6 talk about nostalgia
I never could beat stage 4 as a kid knowing now all I had to do was simple glad I saw the ending
I had this game and has no clue what I was doing as a kid. XD
Same dude NO idea I was like 6 lol
@@damicoboy22 I would always make it to like the third Level out of luck then would get whooped.
I remember having nightmares of Bagan as a kid.
I wonder if we’ll ever see Bagan again. It’s a pity this is all he ever got. He could be a cool Akainu if ever given a proper appearance.
I enjoy playing Super Godzilla!! Defeated Bagan back in the day!!!
I still like playing Super Godzilla
One of my favorite game of snes, I still have the game. AVGN has poor taste of game cause he hated Godzilla 2, Super Godzilla and Godzilla PS4 which I though great godzilla games.
Wow. Great playing
It was a weird game with faults, but the OST was good for the era and the SFX was on point from the movies. Plus the fights and animations were EPIC! Makes me wish an anime or something had been made following the plot of this game. I still own an original copy for my SNES. Yes I know there are far better SNES games, but I still enjoyed it.
Shared Universe idea
1: Godzilla/Kong (Monsterverse)
2: Gamera
3: Ultraman
Godzilla vs
1. King Ghidorah
2. Mechagodzilla
3. Biollante
4. Battra
5. Mecha King Ghidorah
6. Bagan
Why is it so difficult to have two monsters fighting without it being an Einstein project
You have totally destroyed BAGAN!!
Bagan’s theme will always haunt me.
Not me...It's fucking epic.
Soundtrack is beautiful but the game is ok and gets a pass
I dunno, I think the game looks fun to play but the limited soundtrack is really dull.
@@NathanGatten you think Godzilla needs a huge soundtrack? I mean he's Godzilla, only a few songs can tell what he's about to do.
You know, until Godzilla vs Gigan Rex came out, the English version of this game could've worked as a legitimate sequel to the heisei era.
I used to play this a lot as a kid. It was my first Godzilla game, and I wish it's released on the Switch. Even with the janky combat system. lol
wish i still had this game
I need to get a complete playthrough of this thing going!
And the ending contemplating that Godzilla could return as a threat... Not too far off on that assessment!
You should also be aware that there's the Godzilla fighting game for the SFC and an RTS game for Sega Saturn...
Imagine if they added this Kaiju (Super Godzilla) in Kaiju Universe. Prepare Destoroyah! For you will have an opponent in some feats!
I would probably love this game, IF I KNEW HOW TO DO THE ATOMIC BREATH, TAIL WIMP AND ALL ON THE KAIJU!
Anybody like doing the Yu-Gi-Oh Life Point sounds when they use special attacks?
Cool video. Why do i feel like Bagan will be in Godzilla Vs Kong next year?
This game is unique.
😂😂😂
Hey this game kinda predicted Shin Godzilla ability to use projectiles from it's tail.
I played this as a kid, and it was actually really hard to coordinate attacks. I never beat it, but I loved I as a kid
👍 love it!!! ❤
