I fought with this headlight for hours trying to figure it out. I pulled up your video and within 15 minutes I had it replaced. Using one hand from under and one hand from top was the trick. I appreciate you posting this video.
I almost gave up until I watched your video. Thank you for the real and clear instructions. It finally worked just as you described. Thanks to you, I’m the man of the house and garage again.
Bro... you are seriously the goat! Jeep can take a long walk off a short dock for that design but after a few cuts, some busted knuckles i had given up...... until i found this video. 10 minutes later the bulb was replaced
I have to say, THANK YOU. You couldn’t have made it simpler. 40 minutes and 17 scrapes after watching the video I am done!!! There’s definitely no easier way to accomplish it.
The short crescent wrench opened up all the way worked to remove old bulb. I worked from top. My local mechanic was going to charge me 2 1/2 hours labor. He was going to remove front bumper assembly. Don’t get frustrated because it it can be done. Good video.
I feel your pain. I started doing all of this, but I could not get the bulb to turn to take it off. I got cuts everywhere; I had to stop for awhile to see a few videos on how to get them out. Car manufacturers should make it simple to change minor details like this. This is crazy!
Turn the passenger wheel all the way to the left and remove the front part of the inner fender liner. 1-10mm nut and 4 plastic push pins. Pull the inner fender liner back and you have much more room. The job takes about 15 minutes going in this way.
Easy way to find the hole when butting the new bulb in. Hug the Jeep again when putting it in and have a pair of gloves on. Use your left hand (finger on the bulb hole) thru the fender access to guide your right hand holding the bulb. Quick and easy. Great video. Really helped.
Thanks. For the driver side, I put gloves on and put the bulb in the socket. Then I hugged the jeep and put the bulb in my left hand. I put my left index finger on the bulb hole and was able to insert the bulb and turn it.
I just did this for a good friend of mine. Passenger side goes as following. Pull rubber cover off headlight housing. Remove 2 10mm bolts for coolant reservoir and swing out the way with care. Unclip the ecu from the bracket and swing out the way with care. Reach in and pop harness from the headlight bulb first. Follow up with a 22mm or 21mm crows foot wrench, use your hand as leverage with the crows foot on the headlight, should pop right off. Installation is reverse of removal. Be sure to plug light into harness before fishing it back into the housing. Good luck. 🤙
I've done the install - as difficult as stated. Wish I saw your video beforehand, it would have helped. Replaced my halogens with LasFit LEDs - much improved. A couple of suggestions - 1) if you have small kids, maybe this is the time to put their little hands to work 2) make a tool out of plastic or wood to fit in the hole to do the twist - you'd think the manufacturer would include something like this in this case.
The SECOND you said you had to use both hands, it clicked. Went out and finished the job in three more minutes. After spending two hours struggling and ending up here 😂
Dude thanks for the tips!!! I have a 2019 JGC . Never had such a hard time changing a bulb ! Basically had to do it blind … but I did use your top and bottom method for sure ! Putting the bulb back in was the hardest part! Thanks again , very helpful video!
Thank you Adam! My Dad and I were hard stuck until we found your video and implemented the “huge the car- two hand approach” I can see again at night ! 🎉🎉😂
I can’t thank you enough for the “two handed” trick. I wasn’t able to take the headlamp out without it. That was by far the toughest headlamp I have ever replaced.
This is my morning. Thanks for the assist. Jee really screwed the end user on this one, I have never seen a user serviceable part so deliberately obstructed before in all my years servicing my cars. Thanks for the tips.
Hi Adam - thanks for the video. One other helpful tip: I was able to reach the back of the bulb w/ my fingers, but couldn't get enough grip to twist it out. I ended up using a short crescent wrench to grip the back of the bulb (3/4" across the flats) and give me just enough torque to remove it. All ended up being accessible from the top too after the computer was shifted out of the way (but not disconnected).
What an absolute whore of a design, used the video and a bunch of tips from the comments, but there is no simple way but staying the course until you get a good grip. Flathead screwdriver through the bottom to release the clip, bear hug from top and bottom to reattach the clip
Another video suggested a 7/8" or 22mm crows foot wrench on the end of a socket extender. I didn't have this, but I ordered some as an addition to my toolbox. Definitely would help to have either a real tool or an improvised tool that gives one the ability to get some torque to release/tighten the bulb. It was the toughest bulb replacement I've ever done. Thank you for this video and the great comments/suggestions.
On the oassenger side, I went from the top and used a tiny blue pry bar so I could get the leverage to untwist the bulb. I could get mine back in by myself and didn't remove anything. On the driver's side, I had to oull the entire air box out, then go in from inside the wheel well with long 90 degree needle nose pliers to hook the top of the plug and pull down to get the bulb to untwist. My daught had to put that bulb back in because my hands are too big. I heard rumors that dealerships will charge to pull the front of the car off to change the bulbs. Jeep needs smacked for this.
Did both my low beams in about an hour. Your two hand "hug the car" was needed to get the original burnt bulb out. Need that little extra torque. Thanks for the video.
Your video was very helpful, and you are not overstating how irritating and cumbersome the process is. Chrysler designers must've been hittin' the sauce pretty hard when they came up with this. - One thing I think you forgot to mention(maybe u did, idk) is that when removing the old bulbs,(either side), you have to give them a turn COUNTER clockwise, and when installing new bulbs, it's just clockwise. - I think it helps tremendously to connect the bulbs to the plug before trying to put them into place: one less thing to fiddle with in the incredibly small confines.
Engineering at its finest, what a pain in da a§§, this was indeed the best method, hugging the fender I was able to position my left hand coming from the tire wheel and position my middle finger to have enough force to twist it counterclockwise to get it out. Good video.
I tried to replace my passenger side headlight last weekend on my 2017 Grand Cherokee. Lower access is pretty much worthless due to that brace. Going from the top allowed me to get the headlight out but putting it in correctly was impossible with my big hands. I ended up taking the front bumper off which is a lot of work but not horrible. Replaced both sides since the bumper was off anyway. Total time was about 3.5 hours. Bottom line, it was waaaaaay too much work to replace the front headlight bulbs. Jeep either designed it that way so people would go to the dealer for the $$$ repair work or it was simply a horrible design. Anyway, it's done so I should be good for several years. Hopefully.
Thank you! I was able to do this fairly easily with minimal cuts and didnt have to move anything extra out of the way... but as many of you pointed out, having tiny woman hands was clutch. I wouldn't have figured it out without you!
Thank you for taking the time out to warn me of the fact that without the information you provided, an insanely engineered placement of parts would have been at least another hour of frustration. I did everything you recommended plus taking a cut off wheel to the thin sheet metal that wraps itself around that entire upper area and is a non structural element necessary for any of the jeeps plastic trim or body alignment.
Video is a great help! I did this job the way it described but the headlight aim was wide right. I finally realize that the wide ear on the bulb is at 3 oclock, not straight up. It seemed like it wanted to go in but the turn did not feel right. once I positioned the wider ear at 3 oclock, it turned easy and the aim was correct.
This video helped a ton, thank you! Once I was able to feel for the clip, that helped me. I was able to unclip it, then did your old two hand hug the jeep trick, and shimmied it free. How in the world I was able to get the replacement bulb in place was a complete stroke of luck!
I had similar trouble with the driver side low beam bulb. I wasn't able to get a crescent wrench on it like someone in the comments suggested, but I was able to break it loose with a long pair of needle nose pliers.
Easy, once you get the antifreeze reservoir and electronic box shuffled out of the way, remove the back cap of the light and then---- build a small spanner about 4-5 inches long to reach in and turn the bulb. Took a scrap piece of 1 1/4 light rigid steel strap, cut a span in the end to make my spanner. Size the spanner to be just wider than the base of the bulb. Bulb came right out and right back in.
Thanks to you I used the access port in the wheel well to give it the old two handed reach around rub and tug and now it's shooting light all over the place 😂 thanks!
Excellent video. What a pain in the you know what, the two hand method is what ended up working to take it out, then got it connected and had the girlfriend put her small hands to use 👏🏽
Hello I found a easy way to turn the bulb you only have to unscrew the fluid box and move it but not take it out do not move the ecu unit no need for it and now open the access hole by the tire remove the rubber cover for the bulb and ( USE A 7/8 OPEN END WRENCH PUT the open end wrench INTO THE HOLE AND INTO THE HOLE WHERE THE BULB IS AND YOU CAN TURN IT you only need to break the seal than you can use your hand ) The rubber ring on the bulb sticks due to the heat I did it on the passenger side and also used in the drive drive inside car after I removed the air box because I couldn't turn by hand stuck the wrench inside easily to break the seal hopes this helps
I echo the other positive comments, this video was very helpful. I consider myself mechanically inclined yet without the advice, it's not likely I would have considered the two-handed trick, hugging the car. I'm only posting a comment to give some extra advice. Your first tool needed will be patience! Even with the video, the task is still tricky. You'll likely want to punch the car engineer/designer for making this so difficult to reach. I also found putting the new bulb assembly back in place was harder than taking it out. You must align the bulb assembly exactly with the receiving hole for it to fit without being able to see what you are doing. It’s by feel only. I was able to maneuver my phone to get a picture to see the receiving hole, which helped. The bulb assembly has three “ears”, with one being wider than the other two. The position of this widest “ear” needs to essentially be located between 1 & 3 o’clock as the starting point. Once you feel it rest in place, you rotate the assembly clockwise to lock it into place. Good luck.
So I'll save a lot of time for most of you guys out there... I just switched out low beam bulb on passenger side of my 2018 Limited. Reach under coolant reservoir beside radiator but between hoses and light fixture. (With right hand) push hoses of coolant reservoir back to make some room to reach up to elbow deep or so. I twisted off and put back bulb prob faster than i wrote this text.. AND I have only half of my right hand thumb, so if you have all digits then it should go even smoother.. Yes, it was low beam and I just remembered I forgot to put back the rubber cap. Best of luck!
Thanks for your advise, it was helpfull. I'd like to support this feed by adding that to re-install the bulb, I pre-checked the alignment orientation with the old bulb. It made it so much easier to align the new bulb when the harness was connected. JUST BE CAREFULL NOT TO DROP OLD BULB INTO HOUSING OR YOU'LL HAVE TO REMOVE THE WHOLE THING TO GET THE OLD BULB OUT.
great video. at the end of changing my passenger side bulb I was ready to pay someone to do it. One simply cannot overstate how *short* that cable is. like zero slack in it. maybe took me 30mins in Total, most of it was putting bulb in. Thanks!
Mine was on the driver side… don’t even bother going through the wheel well, my 7mnth old wouldnt even be able to get her hand in there… But, after removing the air filter housing it opened it up a bit, still hard to get leverage and you’re pretty much blind while doing it. All that being said it’s doable if you have some time on ur hands save the money! Appreciate the vid!
Thanks to small hands, I was able to get the bulb out without removing or moving anything. I never would have been able to do it without seeing this video though so thank you! The two handed hug thing saved me from getting really pissed off because I could not get it with just one!
I don't care about the head light bulb.. I saw the Boxers and went nuts! :) I just lost my baby Titus almost 3 months ago. He just turned 12. He was brindle and so sweet.. I miss him everyday. Cherish yours! PS. I have the DS3 bulb and they are terrible to put back in.. I've been working at mine for an hour and it just doesn't want to seat. sigh..
got the bulbs replace.... Not easy with large hands ! how do you adjust the light beam from left to right... my is pointing a little out to the Right, Thanks
When you move the ECU on a 2020 detach the upper plastic clip and then there are two steel hooks on the bottom. The motion is up and right to move and push in down and to the left to catch the bottom two hooks to install. You don’t need to remove the wires just wiggle the ECU to the right.
I am now fighting the same side on my 2019 Jeep Grand cherokee Limited. I got 3 out of 6 bulbs changed. It Definitely doesn't need to be this difficult.
Man, I’m still struggling worth the right bulb, can sort of get my hands on it doing the straddle method but can’t get it to budge. It was good knowing that “it’s the hardest bulb” ever to replace though 😂
So I read everyone’s comments and decided to let the “professionals” handle this. Took it to the dealer and they knocked it out in 20 minutes. However, they can’t figure out how to properly reinstall the bulb. Bulbs light correctly but the aim is way off; off in the ditch on one side, about 4’ in front of the vehicle on the other. Going back to the dealer for the third time to see if they can get it right. Moral of the story - not good enough to just get the bulb in. With the magnifier in front of the bulb, it has to be just right or your aim will be way off.
Any idea how to move the ecm out of the way to get access? I've tried this for a week on my '22 JGC WK and no success. There's a clip that I'm able to push to slightly pull up and then another behind that one that won't move. My stock lights are halogen and they're terrible, especially in rain. The wheel well access isn't possible either because of a metal bracket blocking good hand access. I even had my young niece who has tiny hands give it a go and no luck! Jeep dealers won't touch it because I'm replacing with led bulbs. Their option is to have a new headlight installed altogether, which is >$1500 for a vehicle I already paid $4k more than wild have just 2 years ago. Crazy
So I believe I have the replacement bulb locked back in place where it is supposed to be, but my problem is the bulb appears to be aiming down inside of the buzzle and is not making a good beam. Has anyone else dealt with this? Suggestions? I tried taking it out and putting it back in, but that didn't seem to help.
I popped the plug out of the fender well and shoved my hand up there and hooked my finger and turned it loose and pulled it out. It's not easy but it's totally possible from underneath
I just changed my passenger side low beam and what hell OMG ALMOST AN HOUR. I moved the radiator reservoir out of the way unplugged the 2 CPU cables. I zip tied everything out of the way loosely, and I still barley got to it. I’m starting to hate my JEEP. I never believed it would be very difficult.
If you just take the plastic shield off on the top surface and your able to change them from the top, if your doing all this or even thinking this way then take it to your mechanic to get it done
Take one side of the bumper off and take headlight bolts out. Then headlight will be loose. And easy access Being a autobody tech I can tell you over 60% of the cars made today you will have to take bumper off to replace a bulb. But also note I do work on cars everyday so I know how to take bumpers off etc. not saying you dont but if a person isn’t real familiar with vehicles. I would suggest what you did.
Dealing with this right now... this design is insanely stupid. I am also getting more annoyed at how tightly packed and difficult to access almost everything in the engine compartment is, especially items that will certainly required regular maintenance, since there is so much excess space. Every time I work on my Jeep I am glad parts are fairly inexpensive and readily available but equally annoyed by the poor design of the vehicle and cheap materials.
If anyone is reading this comment, understand this is NOT an easy process. If you have big hands, you can NOT do this. I’m 5,9 200lbs and was barely able to do this. 1.). Ensure you are wearing gloves, as any oil from your finger will quickly short out the bulb. 2.). The passenger side can be done by uncliping the ECU board (as shown in video) and removing two 10mm bolts to coolant reservoir (as shown in video). Just move them out of the way. To create the most space, pull the ECU board towards you and not to the side. Make sure to have needle nose pliers to pull up the screw, as you could lose it. You will be using both your right and left arm to get this sob out. Once it’s pulled out, let the bulb hang and feel around where you will be putting the new bulb. Practice with your blown bulb first so you can get the hang on putting in your new bulb. Bulbs aren’t cheap, so that’s why I reccomend this. Once you feel comfortable, bring the new bulb to the car and remove old, replace with new. 3.). The driver side only requires the air filter plastic from the bottom removed. You don’t need to remove the whole box. Remove the rubber seal from the green clips (as shown in video). I was only able to do this using my left arm and hand. I shoved my whole left elbow and arm under the windshield washer reservoire and manuevered everything with my left hand. I’m right handed and was able to do this. This side (in my opinion) was quicker, but stressful. 3.) Your lights are done. Find the engineer that created this idea and throat punch him. Also tell me where he is so I can throat punch him as well.
This gives instructions on how to do it on the passenger side...but I have to do the driver's side...and there's all that air-box stuff in the way....not looking forward to that...
You don't need to bother with the ECU, just pull the two 10mm bolts holding the coolant expansion tank. Flip the tank out of the way. The job is still very difficult to do, but you gain a small amount more and much faster than dealing with the ECU. On the left side, you have to pull the complete air filter housing out to gain access to the bulb. I have been wrenching on cars for 50 years and this is by far the most stupid design that I have ever worked on.
Automobiles are designed by people who never work on them. They put 10 pounds of !@#$ in a 5-pound sack and never think about what ordinary joes must go through to work on them.
I fought with this headlight for hours trying to figure it out. I pulled up your video and within 15 minutes I had it replaced. Using one hand from under and one hand from top was the trick. I appreciate you posting this video.

This is the way to do it. 15 minutes each
you are the man!!! Was ridiculously tough getting my hands to fit but I was able to pull it off lol. Like you said, about 15 minutes!
Still can't get my man hands in. What a joke this is.
Easy way to find the hole when butting the new bulb in. Hug the Jeep again when putting it in and have a pair of gloves on. Use your left hand (finger on the bulb hole) thru the fender access to guide your right hand holding the bulb. Quick and easy. Great video. Really helped.

Special HID lamps? Looks like a PITA! I have a 2016.
Thank you was having a hell of a time trying to change the bulb
I've been working at mine for an hour and it just doesn't want to seat. sigh..
Thanks for the tips definitely made it “easier” but that was an hour of wrist pain getting that done SMH
got the bulbs replace.... Not easy with large hands ! how do you adjust the light beam from left to right... my is pointing a little out to the Right, Thanks
I took the ecu off to replace the light and the check engine light went on. Any advice?
When you move the ECU on a 2020 detach the upper plastic clip and then there are two steel hooks on the bottom. The motion is up and right to move and push in down and to the left to catch the bottom two hooks to install. You don’t need to remove the wires just wiggle the ECU to the right.
Angled needle nose pliers worked like a charm. No hugging needed lol
My hands hurt. Trying to get there. I started questioning myself but I’m glad to know others are having difficulty
You’re in good company!
@@adamj8293 someone said their gonna charge me 110 to change them. I’m tempted but fwak! Ima man damn it. I can spend another 3 hours figuring it out
Replacing bulbs used to be fairly simple. Now you have to rip your skin and try to get it done. May as well do the driver side too. Thanks 👍🏼
Mine is having trouble clipping into the plug? Any tips?
Thank you so much, what a horrible design, I’m about to take your advice and attempt, great video
Thanks for the Information becuz I am about to install one for a friend this afternoon......
been there done it, absolutely obserd they way they did that. I was so cranked
Are these hid bulbs stock from factory, that need replacement. Thanks for the video, sucks the work needed to change something so simple!
What about the other side?
Crazy
If I remember correctly that back clip slides to the side. I remember I had to wrestle it a little to get it out.
How about taking the light bulb housing in front of jeep off?
I popped the plug out of the fender well and shoved my hand up there and hooked my finger and turned it loose and pulled it out. It's not easy but it's totally possible from underneath
I just changed my passenger side low beam and what hell OMG ALMOST AN HOUR. I moved the radiator reservoir out of the way unplugged the 2 CPU cables. I zip tied everything out of the way loosely, and I still barley got to it. I’m starting to hate my JEEP. I never believed it would be very difficult.
Theres access panel in wheel well for low beam😊😊
But still hard to get to lol😊
If you just take the plastic shield off on the top surface and your able to change them from the top, if your doing all this or even thinking this way then take it to your mechanic to get it done
The plastic shield is just covering the car frame. It doesn't help much to remove it.
Your method worked!
This is such a helpful video! Thank you!
Does the rubber dome on the back twist or just pop out?
Pulls off
It just pops off but be careful with it. I tore mine when I pulled it off
I use a screwdriver thru access hole to leverage the connector
Take one side of the bumper off and take headlight bolts out. Then headlight will be loose. And easy access Being a autobody tech I can tell you over 60% of the cars made today you will have to take bumper off to replace a bulb. But also note I do work on cars everyday so I know how to take bumpers off etc. not saying you dont but if a person isn’t real familiar with vehicles. I would suggest what you did.
I thought about that but wasn’t sure how difficult it would be. It’s ridiculous they make such a simple job so hard due to poor design! Thanks.
I tried 2 couldn't get bulb out by wheel
Gotta Hug the Jeep 🙏
I dropped the bulb inside the headlight assembly. Yay me.
What kind of bulb Or what brand did you use
I think It was a Sylvania.
Got it done with two fingers and a dipped glove for added friction
Thank you so much, saved my sanity
As Janky as this is it worked.. thank you so much
This gives instructions on how to do it on the passenger side...but I have to do the driver's side...and there's all that air-box stuff in the way....not looking forward to that...
How do u do it on the driver side?
For the driver side you’ll need to remove the air box. I think that might actually be a little easier than the passenger side
For the passenger side, can’t you just move the thing in front of the battery and slide ur hand to the side to replace the bulb?
Jeep dealership here in Branson Missouri says $370 plus the lightbulb
Holy smokes. That’s outrageous for a headlight.
I have a 2020 and I can still not get it out
Yet another reason to get rid of my 2019 Jeep GC!!
You have never changed the headlights on a 2011 + Ram 1500 they are a real treat.......
Ah so it’s a trend with Chrysler products? Probably all the same design engineers.
Timesaver: he finally starts to say how he did it at 3:00 and is finished at 3:45.
But his method sucks anyway so don’t even bother with that.
i cant get it unlock driver side was easy
