  • I built this Off-Road Wheelchair out of 2 Electric Bikes. Watch how we made the bike HERE: • How to Build an Off Ro... These fat tires should be able to handle all kinds of surfaces, pavement, asphalt, gravel, sand, but climing hills is a different story. Watch as we try to 'hike' up a popular trail here in Provo Utah called the Y. With almost 1000 feet in elevation gain, this mountain should be a great test for the off road wheelchair.
    Watch the reveal as we give it to Cambry HERE: • Homemade Off Road Elec...
    See the NEW updated version HERE: • This is 'Not a Wheelch...
    Check out Cambrys Instagram HERE: / cambrykaylor
    Overall I'm pretty impressed with the bike. We learned some of the limits. I think airing down the tires, and getting a bit more tread on the rubber would be beneficial to going off road. As soon as the bike loses momentum, it doesnt have torque to start going uphill again. BUT on simple slopes, or flat surfaces, this off road wheel chair is a beast.

      You can also edit the sensitivity of the front brakes vs. the rear to have a different percentage of total braking on the front than on the rear.
      Ie. Rear brakes are less sensitive so you don’t lock them up, while the front brakes are more sensitive. That way, by pushing the brakes down at the same time, the front brakes will be doing

    Please take my advice, get some good brakes. I just recently moved to the mountains for a few month and I took my bike. It's a proper mtb, but not made for downhill. I really noticed this when I overloaded my breaks because I was going down a very steep hill and applied them to hard to go slow. For a vehicle that heavy you need good breaks, go get some Magura mid to high level Shimano hydraulic breaks and go for big discs, like 180mm or 203 mm. I already posted this under you last video, but since you probably didn't read it I'll repeat myself. There are junctions for hydraulic break hoses that enable you to activate two breaks with one leaver.

    • @JerryRigEverything
      @JerryRigEverything 5 лет назад +64

      Gotcha. I'm looking into it for sure. On flat surfaces her setup is fine. But on hills, more brakes is a good thing.

    • @NeoDerGrose
      @NeoDerGrose 5 лет назад +11

      @@JerryRigEverything Not only will she have more breaking power but for longer downhill sections it will reduce stress on her fingers because she needs less force on the leavers. Only problem could be that most good breaks come with shorter leavers. Normally that's perfectly fine because of the better ratio between the force on the leavers and the actual breaking force, but I'm not sure if it works with your handlebar setup. Maybe this is an oportunity to investigate possibilities for a more comfortable handlebar set up.

      Might also try these tires. Front and rear specific. Pretty much the only 26x4.0 tires available with a more aggressive tread pattern than the Kenda Juggernauts you have now - the Minion patterns are the gold standard for all-around MTB use. Most other 26x4.0 tires you'll find are for soft surface use - i.e., snow and sand.

      Definitely a very good idea. I took my MTB to the alps this summer and it was pure torture for the brakes and suspension. I have a fully suspended bike but that's not enough for real mountain enduro & downhill. I always thought the heatsink brake calipers on Shimano's more expensive brakes were just for show but I can now confirm that they are definitely there for a reason!
      The one bit of advice I would like Jerry to see is to make the bikes also suspended in the rear where she sits and most of all decrease the pressure of the suspension to cope with the reduced weight, currently it looks too stiff.

    • @DerrenWeekes
      @DerrenWeekes 5 лет назад

      You could possibly take some bits of an old style centre-pull or cantilever cable brake (i.e. the cable hanger and the hanger cable) and and use to turn a single brake cable from each lever into twin cables, then you could use a couple of these handy devices from Hope (www.hopetech.com/product/v-twin-brake/); One lever could do both back brakes and the other lever both front brakes. But that does mean hydraulic brakes on all corners (expensive!)
      I hear Hope are quite an approachable company, might be worth reaching out to them to see if they could help you?
      Or alternatively, I suspect you could find some suitable car parts that could be re-purposed (but again we are talking hydraulic brakes instead of cables).

    Regenerative braking would be cool. That's how electric skateboards and Teslas slow down and it seems to be a nice and smooth method of breaking (then just like the Teslas you could use the brake rotors only when you really needed too). Then you could get two more back wheels and put them up front and it could be a 4x4. The heavier you make it the more worth-while Regenerative braking would be. Also, higher end bikes use hydraulic breaks, which take much less effort and would be easy on the thumbs (also you could make one lever be both back breaks and the other leaver the two front breaks for more control). One more thing, if you ever finish tinkering with it and give it to her, you should build a little custom trailer so she can take it around with her Subaru! I really love what you are doing with this project, keep it up!

      this would be good but also perhaps if the front brace could be setup to be a quick disconnect so that she could more freely enter/exit it would be helpful, also some kind of basket attachment to the back of the seat for food, water, sundries would pretty much finish it off. You seem to be such a nice and kind person, a person you would wish was your friend or family. You truly are one of my idols just because how amazing of a person you are. Wish more people were like you, would make the world a better place. Keep doing you, Zack!
    Also, if you read the comments, there is some tips that might improve the bike, like:
    - Rotating the brake handles downwards so you use your hands instead of thumbs to use them
    - Adding a handbrake connecting to all brakes somewhere around the seat to allow it to be fully stopped, useful for e.g. switching back to normal weelchair
    - Obviously connecting the front brakes to the handles
    I personally also was thinking you could add a little pump attaching to the air-valve to allow air to flow in or out with the press of a button, to easily adapt to road and off-road situations.
    Can't wait to see more of these!

    I know this is a late comment, Great work on the bike and also Congrats on your wedding!
    Just a thought, if Cambry does like to do outdoors, you could add a detachable fold-able roof with solar panels that could charge up the battery and increase the range. Also increasing the weight on the bike will introduce better traction. There is a lot of math and engineering involved, but I will leave that to you. This could also help others in need of such green vehicles.
    Will be waiting for the video!!!

    No issues with assembly for me ruclips.net/user/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L but I could see where some might benefit from using an experienced bike assembler/mechanic. I'm an older rider starting back after a 10 year break. This bike exceeds my capabilities and has been easy to get comfortable riding. I'm mostly on easy trails with almost no street riding and have not been disappointed with the performance of the bike. My fitness level is far below what I previously rode with and because of that the mileage is going on the bike slowly. While I'm losing weight slowly, the bike seems to tolerate my 220 pounds just fine. The bike has been used by several family members ranging from 5'5" - 5'9".

    Way to go Zack. If you can't figure out the 4 tire brakeing system, I would recommend just switching out the 2 rear brakes for 2 front brakes. In mountain biking the front brakes give you 70% of the brakeing power while the rear only offers 30% and have a tendency to lock up giving you less control on the decents. This inevitably may be irrelevant due to the riding position but I'd say give it a shot.

    Hey +ZachsJerryRig
    So some things you could do,
    1: Make it so then the throttle is on one connection if possible because as is she might be putting different amounts of throttle on each bike (something small to think about but maybe the power would be more equally distributed.)
    2: make an E- brake.
    3: put breaks on the front and use dual brake levers so then she'd have to break levers for the front and back, but better breaking hopefully.
    4:maybe put lights on it she can turn on with a switch incase she wants to ride at night.
    5: as you'd mentioned some suspension for the seat to make it feel better.
    6: i'd say figure out a better way of getting into the wheel chair incase (for what ever reason or at some point) she's by her self and falls off somehow she can get back on.
    7: come up with a way to make give it regenerative braking (so as to make it last longer :) )
    8: And definately gotta ad the solar power :D

    Maybe add an additional removable battery pack that sits below the seat (with a shield for protection of course) and jerry rig a smaller brake lever inside of the original brake lever to control the front brakes.
    That way if you pull the smaller inner lever, the front brakes get applied and if you pull the larger lever, both front and back brakes gets engaged.
    By the way, make it so that you can lock the brakes in position so she could rest on a slope without having to engage the brakes all the time.
    To sum it up:
    - Removable battery pack under seats.
    - Smaller brake lever under the larger brake lever (small lever engages front brakes, larger lever applies brakes to the front and back at the same time).
    - Brake locks.

    Go! #Quadzilla
    You seriously need a roll cage solution that can be added to the seat for excursions like this.
    Just make it with lock pins, so it can be installed and removed easily.
    I lived in Salt Lake City for 30 years, I miss it a lot!
    This bike is just the most awesome, and amazing thing!
    I'm really suprized that those bikes don't have regenerative braking? If not, you could install something that turns the motors into brakes, by shorting out the leads through a high current rheostat of some sort.
    You need to get with the electronics and mechanical engineering department at BYU and see what they could come up with.
    Or maybe U of U? LOL!
