    Just something for you to have a giggle over. Years ago, my parents got a Philips TV & VCR from a rental company here in Australia. Both of these items were IR remote operated, & one remote could operate both TV & VCR. One day, my brother was watching a movie, & he had the TV remote. Dad came in, picked up the VCR remote, & changed the TV channel. My brother switched back to the channel he was watching. This went on for a couple of minutes. My brother then set the sleep timer on the TV, then went out. 15 minutes later, the TV switched off. My father wasn't up to date with all this modern technology. He thought the TV had packed up. He rang the rental company, & the tech came to our place to find out why the TV had "mysteriously" switched off. Tech removed the rear cover, went over the TV with a 'fine tooth comb', & found nothing wrong. Dad asked why, & the tech then told him about the sleep timer, & my brother probably set it before he went out.

    I got a sharp CRT TV from a garage in an estate sale, then later got a Sharp 14" LCD TV in another one with the original remote. The funny part? The remote is fully compatible with both TVs. It's both a blessing and a curse as I'll occasionally control the wrong TV.

      Not suprising as both will use the same Sharp remote coding system, so yes they will work. Some also can be switched to an alternate code selection for avoiding this.

      Same case with Sony. I have a remote for a Sony Bravia LCD TV from like 2009, but most of the buttons work on my FD Trinitron TV from 2000. I've also read even the PS5 media remote works with Trinitrons.

    I remember how I did not have my head in a TV for several decades. Then in the early 90's I had a new Zenith console die on me and being in warranty called repair and they came out to fix it. I was there when the repairman came. He popped off the back cover and I was expecting a chassis. There was none. Just a circuit board with some cabling to external controls. It amazed me as I reflected upon back in the 50's and 60's how I lugged sets home for ham radio harvesting, that weighed a ton, stuffed to the gills with all kinds of neat stuff. Wow, what a change.
    Great save OM!

Of all the stuff i fix I might make 500 a month. 40 years ago yes, you could and I did but 20byearsvagobi got out as i saw the writing on the wall. Best thing i ever did. Then I got a real job at the phone company. Seriously though that had been my calling all along. My uncle and cousin worked for the phone company. I first applied when i graduated high school. I missed the cut off and it was 25 years before they started hiring in numbers again. All those people that were hired in the 77 to 82 blitz started to retire in 2004 which is when i finally got my foot in the door.

    I did this same thing to a samsung 45 inch lcd tv that i picked up from the local electronics recycling center. Its sad they wire these to go black when one little light fails. They want you tobuy a new set every 3 or 4 yrs. I was told that these led sets when brightness is placec on a minium setting with 8 hrs or run time everyday will last roughly 4 yrs. That is not long at all compared to crt tvs that lasted 10 to 20 yrs. Personally i think the CCFL bulb backlight lcd tvs lasted longer, and had a better tone of light. I think leds have that bluish tint to them. Great video and repair. Yeah the nervousiness of cracking the lcd when doing this repair.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  2 года назад +1

      Yes LEDs do look more blue and that's just because of how white LEDs work. The diode itself is actually blue and it's yellow phosphorus that gives it the red and green spectrum. The problem is the phosphorus wears out over time and more blue light shines through then the yellow light generated by the phosphorus. Quantum dot sets don't experience the same problems as they use blue diodes I use quantum dots suspended a film to produce the red and green spectrum. It's all about cost. LED is cheaper than fluorescent tubes, and there's no Mercury that needs to be disposed of. In the end it's all about manufacturing this stuff as cheap as possible and they don't care that it doesn't last because you'll be there to buy a new one. They don't want them fixed and it's not because they can't be fixed it's because they don't want to stock parts. Stalking parts cost money, paying someone to run a warehouse cost money. It is not in any manufacturer's interest to burden extra costs to stock spare parts or manufacture spare parts once a product is out of production. Some may disagree but hear me out. You make all these spare parts that you think may possibly be needed down the road and then you have to start them somewhere. What do you do with the spare parts once nobody's buying them anymore? This is what is called Dead inventory and it has to be written off. So now you could have hundreds of thousands of dollars for spare parts that are never going to be used. Now I know someone's going to say yeah but someone might need that part someday and that's true somebody might but the cost of storing those parts is enormous. What I work for Sony they probably had 20,000 ft dedicated to parts storage and two full-time guys that just walked around picking up parts out of bins and sending them out to service centers. they closed down the parts department's locally and consolidated everything to Kansas City where they had a even bigger Warehouse that was going to dish out parts for all of North America. But running a warehouse of that size cost a lot of money you've got multiple employees and you've got rent and electricity and all the other costs associated with running such a big operation with very little profit because as products become cheaper fewer people are going to ever repair them. As soon as the government's remove the requirements for manufacturers to supply parts for repair they all shut down their parts departments and repair departments. For the manufacturer it was cheaper if something broke under warranty to just replace it with a new one

    We have spring clean up every April here in the Fresno area. I picked up two 32 flat-screen sets off the side of the road, and they both worked perfectly. Nothing wrong with them. Sold them at a garage sale for $30 apiece.

      A few years ago when we could still put electronics out at the side of the road I used to go and connect all kinds of stuff. One year I collected over 150 computer monitors. These were CRT type monitors that were being thrown away when one of the local internet companies was giving people a 19 inch LCD monitor when they resigned their contract. My garage was full of said monitors this was before I was doing RUclips videos. They're all donated to charity and I got a $1,000 gift receipt to the doc from my income tax. All these monitors were put into a container and paired with old computers and shipped over to Africa for children to learn computers. The charity I was doing this with was refurbishing old computers and putting free copies of Microsoft Windows on old 386 and 486 machines they were all donated. I don't know how many classrooms were equipped but I picked up about 150 monitors over 2 days loading my truck that I was driving at the time to the brim and stacking them in my garage. They came over with a 5-ton truck to pick them all up and take them away. I still have a few because they didn't want anything bigger than 15" monitors. the cubicles that were being built in these classrooms for kids we're so small that they could not accommodate more than a 15 inch monitor. I collected a couple of 17 and 21 in CRT monitors which I still have because they were too big for the program. I should dig that 21" rgb monitor out and see it it still works.

    Repaired my 32” Hitachi flatscreen several months ago. One bad LED. These small TV's use a 95 volt supply. Just went down to my local repair shop and lucked out, they had the replacement strips in stock. 35Euro, not bad. Why the investment? Well it has multi input capability, HDMI, VGA, SCART ( which is composite video and audio in ) as well as a discrete 3.5mm input connector for audio and video in.
    The one thing I like about it is that on the channel info screen it is not language sensitive. Now it’s ready for another 7 years of usage. The only issue I encountered with the set was the fact that the adhesive on the strips was a bear to remove, a hair dryer and a very thin putty knife helps.
    BTW, I always unplug all of my flatscreens when not in use, they as well as modern computers are power leaches when in the "off" position.
    It’s always a good find if it is a simple repair and something one can use in the shop. Too bad we cannot modify the power supply to decrease the current a little more. Extend the life of the LEDS. Brightness is controlling the LCD screen only, LEDS are set at a constant brightness.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  Год назад

      Power leaches? Nothing compared to the old tube TV's when they went to the "instant on" sets that kept the filaments all just up 24 hours a day so you didn't have to wait 2 minutes for the set to warm up every time you wanted to watch it. Tv would draw 200 watts turned off and 250 on lol.

  • @ianforfun1

    What a coincidence, my 40 inches 8-year-old Hitachi HD Ready TV has similar but not quite the same fault and symptoms. A corner is dark but there is a full picture however when the corner darkens the rest of the picture slightly darkens as if I've lost contrast and looks flat. By repeatedly switching on and off I can get a normal picture and leave it on for hours, it remains. When I turn the set to standby and switch it on the dark corner returns and after switching on off many times I get lucky and the normal picture returns. I suspect that there may be an intermittent thermally related short on the corner LED drawing more current?

    Yeah I had a Panasonic TV where the LEDs must fail short, as about four or five if them failed over a number of years and the set still ran. I stubbornly refused to stop using the set until the voltage finally fell below a certain level, at which point the controller finally stopped tolerating the situation and shut the set down. I did buy a complete set of LEDs from China for it and will get round to fitting them sometime.
    The replacement set (a Sharp smart TV) has one of these evil RF remotes, so if that ever fails I'm screwed as the set has ONE button on the back that can change source and switch on/off only.
    I did see a 32" set (also a Sharp coincidentally) recently for £99, which at current exchange rates is about $115.

    Where can I find info on diagnosing an Insignia brand 55" TV? I spent $500 years ago on this TV and it'd be a shame to throw it out. I don't think it's backlight because it doesn't even try to turn on making me think it's a board issue. When the TV has power there is a solid light (good behavior) and when you turn it on it's supposed to flash but it just stays solid. Should I just bake the boards to reflow the solder (works for printers) or should I try and figure something else out? Thanks in advance

    I know this is a dumb question, but why couldn't they run the LEDS in parallel? It wouldn't take a ridiculous 90 plus volts either.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  2 года назад

      Not a dumb question at all. It's to do with efficiency. Each LED is going to require about 3 volts and maybe 30 milliamps. Now this TV only has 21 LEDs so it wouldn't take more than about a half an hour at 3 volts the power of the map but bigger TVs can have 100 LEDs or maybe more so all of a sudden you're having to have bigger conductors to carry the extra current and a larger power supply. Plus and here's the big problem it's much harder to control the current when you're dealing with parallel LEDs. With a series string your power supply can be limited to 30 milliamps that's all the power that it gives and each LED has 30 milliamps passing through it. Remember that the voltage is what's dropping on each LED you're dropping 3 volts across each series LED but 30 milliamps is the current that's going through them all. In parallel each LED can draw as much power as it tries to draw. If you had one go out and go open it wouldn't affect it all the rest would continue to run but if you had one short which also can happen that one that shorts is going to dump a lot of power from the power supply through it which could in turn damage the power supply or melt some wires. Haven't even been serious it's just a much simpler design with fewer things to go wrong. Regardless whether they ran them in parallel or in series LEDs can still fail and the only thing that would be different is if it failed in an open state if it's shorted it would kill the set. On a serious design if one shorts the panel keeps running with a dark spot kind of how it is now with the LED shorted out they go open the entire panel goes out. It's a 50/50 as to whether it's going to Short or open when it fails. I have an LED light over my bench right now that one has shorted on and all the rest continue to operate. so it's luck of the draw you don't know how they're going to fail when they fail they're either going to go dead short or they're going to go open either way regardless whether it was parallel fed or series fed one situation is going to result in a dead panel and the other would end up with a dark spot.

    PAUSE heat burnout DEsoldered one of the chips [1 month and 5 years] (guarantee was 5y) the intermittent fault was easy to find by bending the frame and then pressing on the chips.
    I think this was caused by PAUSING the TV when the phone rang or making a drink / food, I guess there was a lot of bright light causing heat.
    Not a backlight issue, the screen colours went a bit purple now and again.
    Now I turn off the TV when the phone rings.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  2 года назад +1

      Because the power supply would have to be much more beefy and the wires also much heavier. It would also be much harder to regulate current if they were in parallel. In series the power supply is limited to 30ma. For Carol we're talking a power supply that's putting out a couple of amps and when you're doing that it's kind of hard to limit the current to each individual LED when they're in parallel you can have one LED that's going bad and drawing a lot more current. In series you limit the current and that's it the entire string is limited to that current at the higher voltage

    Well, in the end it was a good deal for what you intend to use the TV for.
    Salvaging a disposed set plus your time and labor to make it yield value again beats spending $150, more or less.
    Probably will last you for a good few more years so long as you don't drive the remaining LEDs too hard.

      @@12voltvids Well, you did get it because it was an opportunity for a bargain. Sometimes, those do not happen conveniently but you just know that you have to take it.
      At the very least, you have a TV at the moment that you do need it. You won't have to spend your hard earned money to get another one. Of course, that's the case only when it actually happens. Otherwise, it is taking up space.

    I have a suspicion that RCA doesn't like purchasers of their sets repairing them. Too many people doing this world hurt their bottom line.

      @@12voltvids Unlike just a few years ago, these days, *inflation* is in the equation, and is likely here to stay for many years to come. Remember the 1970's? Just like everybody else, TV manufacturers' costs are *increasing,* and they must pass these costs on to consumers to remain profitable. Prices are going *up, up, up,* and if word gets round that RCA TV set owners can have a business repair them for cheaper than if they were to replace them by purchasing a new set, there would be negative repercussions for television manufacturers. You have *just demonstrated* that these sets *can* be repaired, and as inflation intensifies, I suspect it will become economical to do so in the near future.

    Smart tvs may have more it's. But they are dumb for the consumer. The smarter the tv.. The more dumber for the device, but even dumber for the consumer. There is crts from the 70s still working today.. Whereas these smart tvs only last for a few years. What Good is smart if you don't work. All of it is disposable. Any slight power surge can knock these smart tvs dead. Not so with the classic tvs.. They were beasts. Solid state and easily repaired. Our landfills are full of these tvs.. Disposable and more often then not recycled. Everything seems disposable nowadays. Including flat screens.

      CRT has a shitty picture compared to panels. Also they were very small screens that took up half the room. Good riddance.
