I was here when this tornado hit, i live in lincoln, it was really scary because at the time we were in school and the power went out and then someone went on the announcements and said “everyone please immediately seek shelter”, and he sounded very rushed and panicked. But we got lucky and it went right around our school. It was scary because one of my friend’s neighbors works in waverly and his building got knocked over and he had to climb out of the rubble. Some intense storms
Tornadoes all around the Des Moines, Iowa area also tonight. I have gotten 3 tornado warnings on my phone and local NBC station coverning the storms non stop since 6:00PM and it is a little after 9 now
My parents live in West Des Moines and my sister lives between Cumming and Norwalk. We also have 2 of our sons that live in Omaha. We live in Phoenix. Stressing to say the least. Happy to say everyone dodged a bullet tonight. Nasty storms but all are safe.
I live in Ralston Nebraska which is an enclave of Omaha. We got lucky. A wall cloud was on a path right for us, but all we got was some small hail, rain, and a little wind. It's sad to see some of our fellow citizens weren't.
New construction homes are total garbage. When the big Cascadia quake happens, at least 800,000 homes will be leveled...as they use the same garbage construction here as everywhere else in the US. And then everyone plays victim when their pos built house crumbles like a deck of cards
This storm hit the 2 largest cities in Omaha, Lincoln and Omaha. The Iowa Governor just declared western Iowa, just across the Missouri River from Omaha, a disaster area.
They should be happy with that damage. It's really not bad with kind of tornado they got hit by. A wedge tornado not wiping the houses clean is just crazy.
Nahum 1:3 3 The Lord is slow to anger and great in power, and the Lord will by no means clear the guilty. His way is in whirlwind and storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet.
This was a catastrophic tornado. The one house looks like it got EF-4 damage, so this was at least an EF-4...even though most look like EF-2 or EF-3 damage
I feel bad for everyone in the area, but especially bad for the ones whose homes are just a pile of sticks now. Someone's fireplace even got tossed upside down. Devastating. 😞
Most new homes in Kansas actually DO NOT come with a basement or a small safe room. I was shocked when I lived there and looked at em in 2022..over a dozen homes in different areas around Wichita. Almost all of them are STILL on the market...lol!
Damn, might be at least EF-3 or even EF-4, no possibility of an EF-5, because there are still houses standing, no houses with just the foundation or "slabbed" houses.
The November 21, 1992 outbreak, in which six confirmed tornadoes struck the Houston area, caused the most severe (EF-4) damage to the Ship Channel area and the subdivisions of Sterling Green North and South in Channelview, TX. Although rated as an EF-4, many homes were wiped from their slab foundations. I know because I was there that day and witnessed the damage to my relative's nine year old home. It started out as a beautiful, sunny, autumn day; then, the sky turned a bright, blinding yellow, then green. The wind picked up, and the transformers near the water tower, and behind the rows of tall pines on Pennygent Street, began to arc and catch fire; the trees began bending and snapping as the hail came down. Inside, the hail was coming down the chimney and bouncing off of the marble hearthstone; then, the lights went out. We huddled in the powder room with a small mattress over our heads; wind swept under the doors, the walls shook, we could hear glass breaking all around, and it sounded, not as a 'freight train', but a giant pounding on the outside and roof of the house with his fists. Damaged, and on a corner lot, surrounded by a neighborhood of tall pine trees, including a 50 ft. one next door, the house fared better than most homes because my uncle supervised the construction of it, including the strapping down of the roof (hurricane strapping) and the anchoring of the walls to the foundation. The roof and walls held, although damaged; a two by four sailed between the burglar bars to embed itself in the opposite wall. The centered bathrooms-powder rooms in most of these homes in the Sterling Green South subdivision served as safe zones, and were still standing when outer walls collapsed; the powder room was where we all hid. The house also had burglar bars all around which broke up, and helped deflect, most of the debris flying from damaged homes across from the West and the North. We were certain that two tornadoes struck the subdivision within some fifteen minutes of each other, as there was a lull between, after the windows blew out, but most homes on the North and West facing sides were still intact. Speaking of windows, a month later, when we were able to rip out the carpet, there was a straight, three inch wide line down the middle of the living room where pulverized glass, roofing tiles, and forest detritus, had been blown beneath the carpet. It was the most frightening thing I had ever experienced, and I hail from Oklahoma where tornadoes are prevalent year around; just visiting kin that awful day. The fire departments in the surrounding Channel area, the sheriff's department, Hazmat, the churches, schools, and Red Cross, all did outstanding jobs keeping the area cordoned off, and providing what was needed in the manner of food, clothing, and shelter. I have never witnessed such an immediate and thorough-going response to a disaster anywhere I have ever lived that compared to theirs. Here are details about it all: www.tornadotalk.com/channelview-tx-f4-tornado-november-21-1992/

Just by the debris it looks like these houses were not well built. They just blew apart. When they rebuild people should demand stronger materials to be used and that anchors be put around all the walls to the ground. The roofs need to have anchors as well to help keep them in place. All this will help keep damages down depending on how strong the tornado is. Prayers to all involved. Builders use the cheapest materials they can get away with.
I agree!! We are in Arizona and they build the homes here as fast as they can using the cheapest, most inferior materials they can buy!! We live where temps can get as high as 120+ in the Summer and they build homes better suited to living where it reaches only 85° in the Summer!!! Then they sell them for ridiculous prices. Praying for Everyone in Nebraska, Iowa and in harms way!!!
I've actually spent time around Lincoln Nebraska and there's nothing about the terrain to block the wind. The hail gets to be the size of grapefruits. These risks are known. Why overbuild when it will be destroyed all the same? There are no nice ef0 tornadoes. Just absolute monsters.

@@DR-mq1vn I certainly didn’t pray to some celestial dictator to provide for them. I donated $500 this afternoon which is what these people need. They don’t need religious fanatics chanting ancient nonsense spoken by a desert dwelling hippie 2,000 years ago. Now is not the time for primitive myths and fairytales, it’s time for action.
Multiple reasons. An EF4 or EF5 tornado will destroy a home no matter what you build it out of. The EF5 that struck Joplin damaged the hospital (a reinforced concrete building) so badly that while it visually looked salvageable, was so structurally compromised that it had to be demolished and rebuilt. Tornadoes like that can strip asphalt off roads. Another reason is cost and resources. If your hypothetical "strong house" costs twice as much to build, then only half as many will get built, because money/resources is always the constraining factor. Finally while tornadoes themselves are common, the odds of any particular home being struck by one are very low: hurricanes are so large that you can reliably expect to experience one every few years if you live in an area prone to them, but statistically, most people who own a home in tornado prone areas won't actually experience one striking their particular home in their lifetime. Not much comfort to those that do, but this is also why storm shelters and home insurance exist.
Do you think a brick house could stand up to an EF4 or EF5 tornado hitting it? It would level it! Nothing can stand against an EF5 tornado. Please stop commenting on things you know nothing about. Educate yourself.
