I agree, too many guitar lessons online are so concerned with CAGED shapes and chord tones (which are cool and important), but I think the player watching can get overloaded with all of that stuff. Most of the rock/blues stuff we all like is going to be much simpler, ie. Pentatonic based. You dont need to be fluent in every shape, just a good pentatonic skeleton and the knowledge of the intervals around the scale degrees can get you far.
Hey Harold, I actually just think back when I started playing guitar and what things I wanted to learn. And that’s how I get the topics for my lessons. Nothing very complicated or deep theory. I started playing in my mid teens, about 55 years ago and thanks to your lessons, along with a couple of others on the web, I've learned more technique and style in the past couple of years than over the previous 50+! Rusty, your laid back style of teaching is amazingly informative while at the same time being just pure fun. This lesson is just another fine example of that. My almost 71 year old fingers are now doing things I never dreamed they could do 4-5 years ago. Even if I only master 40-50% of your lessons, the improvements in my playing are pure joy. If I could bundle myself, along with you and your instruction videos into a time machine and go back to my early, Beatles induced desire to play, my career path may have been very different! Keep up the great flow of inspiring lessons. I know that, at my age, I'll never become a world class guitarist, but I'm sure going to have fun trying 😂!!
We didn’t have internet when I started playing, so we learned everything by ear, listening to records and Don Kirchner‘s rock concert 😎 But over the years obviously some theory Thanks Rusty, you’re one of the best teachers in my book .. keep it simple stupid
Man, every time I watch one of your videos I get a renewed sense that I am going to advance on the instrument and this video in particular is one like that, so full of great info, any level of player can benefit. Thanks so much Rusty!
I love this comment Rick!!! I’m excited for you and your guitar journey! And I’m glad I can be a part of it with you. Thanks a lot for taking the time to watch my videos and enjoy the rest of your weekend.👍
I try to practice playing along with the backing track every day. I can play for 15 to 20 minutes without stopping, using arpeggios, chord tones, and all sorts of techniques. When I get tired, I take a break on the pentatonic scale. Sometimes, it sounds like real music, which is a shame, because it doesn't happen as often as I would like.
I messed up. I meant to put this comment in the main section. Although, I agree with what you're saying. Hello Rusty! Yet another superb, informative lesson. You give us so much to think about and how to get the most out of phrasing to play more lyrically. BTW, I love your Strat! The grain and paint scheme with the maple neck is very nice. Love the pick guard as well. Thanks for another informative useful lesson. Respect. Doug Piper.
That’s great that you practice like that every day! And you’re working on the right stuff for sure! I know you’re having fun with that Guitar. Let’s keep working on this stuff together and I will talk to you soon.👍
Hello again Rusty! I love how you emphasize to train ones ear to play to backing tracks. A very good way to improvise. Thanks! Hope you had a nice Easter. Tim

Thanks a lot, Stephen! This is what it’s all about! Playing from the heart. Thanks for taking the time to watch my lessons and I hope you have a great weekend also.👍
Hi Rusty. I always enjoy your approach to demonstrating these concepts. When choosing a pentatonic scale to work with a certain key you may want to mention that a player can use both the major pentatonic and it's relative minor pentatonic scale and vice versa. E.g. In your first key in this lesson you demonstrate your point with a Bm chord and the corresponding minor pentatonic i.e. B minor pentatonic. Your subscribers may benefit from knowing that D major pentaonic works just as well. Thanks again.
Thank you Rusty for being there for us guitar aficionados 👍🏻 I am in a period of my life where I just don’t have the time to practise much, but I will one day revert back to all of your videos! That first solo sounded bliss by the way! All the best from Belgium 👍🏻😎🇧🇪
I don’t think at all , I use my ear … that’s the trick , great you mentioned this here and I think you’re the only one bringing this up in a tutorial 😊 and when you play by ear you play by heart there’s no knowledge in between …. Which makes the solo really stand out because of its emotional quality … the problem with most guitarplayers especially beginners is that they have a problem of letting go of the theory and solely trust on their instincts
Priceless. I like the way you go from minor pentatonic to major and only play a few notes from the major pentatonic then back to the minor pentatonic. It's less confusing that way and it gives you a different sound.
My piano teacher loaned me his guitar to play harmonics since it was easier than my ukulele. But after two minutes I had to stop since I've got shoulder problems. He realised that the uke is perfect for me. I also found out that I won't be able to vibrato. So I'll learn other techniques. I'm still practicing my circle of fifths progression to learn the fretboard in G, and will switch to E minor as soon as I've got the major scale better integrated. I actually don't like tabs and am transcribing into notation. But I'm throwing in your little tricks with triads and pentatonics into the progression, and I'm super chuffed with my progress. Merci beaucoup for all your help.
Rusty, you're a real fine player and a fantastic teacher. I can't believe how different I'm playing just 2 weeks after finding your channel. I've always loved to improvise and listen for the good notes. But you're making it easier to target them more consistently. Thank you, brother.

Thanks again Joseph this support to my channel really means a lot to me! I appreciate you taking the time to watch my videos! I hope you enjoy your weekend👍
Rusty let me start out by saying that I love your channel immensely. I have learned to solo using your lessons and watch and add a like to all of them. I really have enjoyed a few videos that you have done like shoock me all night long and sweet home. It kind of put you in the mind of an artist and what they think we they write or play a solo. I would really love to see you break down one of Aerosmith Joe Perry since he uses the Pentatonic a lot when soloing. One in particular is the solo for Crazy. It seems like he changes positions with the chords. Would be a great song to break down for beginners learning to solo as well as just a killer solo. Seems to me and I may be wrong that he uses the major as well as the minor Pentatonic. Would love your take on it. God bless and keep up the amazing work you do.
That sounds like we like the same classic rock tunes! And I definitely love me some Joe Perry Guitar!!! I will have to look into that tune. Sounds like you’re moving forward in your guitar journey. We can keep working on this stuff together buddy talk to you soon.👍
I’m glad you like the lessons! Most of my videos cover that topic. You can use groups of notes within the Pentatonic scale or you can use arpeggios and triads over the chords. But watch and listen to the players that you like. Talk to you soon.👍
Will playing the A minor extended scale still work for the progressions when you're playing the E and F chords or do you have to play those pentatonic scales. I was not sure if you make the changes. Thanks.
If you’re improvising over a backing track, that’s in the key of A minor, the A minor Pentatonic scale will work over all of the chords in that progression. Like I said, in the video, I use one main scale over the entire progression. Thanks for checking out the video.👍
I plug my guitar, microphone, and the earphone jack of the computer into a mixer. Then I take those outputs go into my interface. Which goes directly into my iPhone for recording. But this also works for practice. I have a headphone jack in my interface. Thanks for checking out the video.👍
Hey Robert, I use a small mixer that I plug in my guitar, microphone and backing track from the computer. Then that goes directly into my interface, which goes into my iPhone for recording. Using a small mixer allows you to use multiple inputs. Then I just plug into the headphone jack of my interface. Thanks so much for checking out my Lesson👍

Cool! I’m happy to help! Enjoy your weekend🤛
You are a great teacher !! So nice to see your Bible on the desk ! You have really opened my eyes on this great scale !!
Thanks James! I’m glad you noticed the Bible! And I’m glad you got something from the lesson! Blessings, my friend🙏
What a fantastic video have a wonderful day Rusty also tomorrow is my friends birthday also my birthday ❤❤❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊😊😊
Thanks for watching! Happy Sunday 🙏
Rusty thank you bro.
You’re welcome JW, good to hear from you👍
Im struggling to come up with new licks in these scales. How would you recommend going about that? Love your content!
@@rustysguitar1 Great. Thanks. That makes it easy.
Rusty,Thanks for the great video. Can you explain your head phone set up when your practicing?
I plug my guitar, microphone, and the earphone jack of the computer into a mixer. Then I take those outputs go into my interface. Which goes directly into my iPhone for recording. But this also works for practice. I have a headphone jack in my interface. Thanks for checking out the video.👍
Hey Rusty, continuing to love your lessons, do you teach individual or group guitar lessons $ online? Thanks again!
I’m glad you like the lessons!!! Just the RUclips lessons for now! Thanks so much for all your support👍
How do you set up so you can hear the backing track and your guitar in your headphones? great lesson thank you.
Thank you I will try to figure that out
You are the dogs bollocks. a saying rarely used today. it means the best.

Hey Rusty, I love watching your videos! I design and build custom FX pedals, and would love to throw something together for you, no strings attached. Let me know, and keep up the good work, sir!
I’m glad you like the videos! And that’s awesome that you build pedals. I have always liked the Klon style drive. I would definitely love to have a dual drive pedal in that style. And possibly a blend knob. I appreciate the comment and have a rockin weekend buddy.😎
@@rustysguitar1 I do make a pedal that is very similar to how a klon sounds, very "transparent" and touch sensitive, but the circuit itself is absolutely nothing like a klon. What's the best way I can contact you?
@@Blinkerd00d rustysguitar@gmail.com
@@rustysguitar1 awesome- I threw the circuit together last night, and I'll hit you up as soon as the artwork is finished. All of my pedals have hand painted graphics done by my wife. I married well lol
@@Blinkerd00d Wow that’s awesome bro!!!😎
