I have been an Avenza user for about a year now and watched this video, because I'm interested in how it compares to Onyx so I'm not so much interested in the part about Avenza as I'm familiar with it already. What I want to point out is that Avenza may not have a super easy to use UI, but it does most everything I need. I don't mind making my own maps, and I can easily georeference them myself, and most maps available online (free and for purchase) are already geo-referenced in the form of geo-PDF's. There's lots of free maps and there is also an Avenza maps store with maps of various resolutions (1:24K to 1:500k), for parks and lots of other popular areas. Avenza does provide the ability to create and edit tracks/routes.
thanks for the feedback! This video has gotten a little aged and needs a redo. if i ever get to that i'll be sure to incorporate your suggestions and look a little deeper at avenza
I use both Gaia and OnX. There are features I like about both. If someone could combine all the layers and off line map saving of Gaia and user ease of OnX. They would have in my opinion the best mapping/ Navigation platform for off-roading.

I used to tether the tablet to my phone before I started paying for a cell plan for the tablet. I've found it very helpful. I use it for all of my trip navigation in the jeep. The trip to New Hampshire (see my latest video) all the navigation, and most of the music for the trip, was done on my tablet instead of my phone.
